The menu on offer is not bad, you can get sandwiches and smaller dishes for lunchtime or main meals too. The food is quite nice and the portions are a good size. Prices are also reasonable at around £5 for sandwiches with chips and main meals from £7. Staff are efficient and the pub always seems to be clean and tidy. There is no area to sit outside so smokers have to stand on the street by the entrance. There is no parking either but it is only a short walk to a pay and display car park.

The main bar area was quiet for a monday night, but there was a pianist in the corner and the atmosphere was really cosy, not to mention a good range of real ales that the barman informed me were all local. The room we stayed in was clean and tidy and the staff were all excellent, couldn't have asked for more.

The Hotel itself has so much potential its a shame that nobody seems to want to develop it into a succesful business. It has Lots of spacious rooms, and a Ballroom/Disco downstairs which can be used for partys. In the old days it also used to have a Gym and Sauna, so it could really be turned into a goldmine. The Pub itself is popular with the younger crowd, there is enough space in there to have the choice of a quiet drink or a livelier get-together. Good place, but could be so much better with a little TLC

There were curtains drawn in the middle of the room, breaking up the large open area. The tables were arranged for comfort and allowing private conversations not to be overheard. My friend and I had leek soup, deep fried brie, and shared the duck main. The duck main came with green string beams and creamed potatoes. Both hit the spot for such a cold April evening, and the duck was cooked beautifully. I finished off my meal with a citrus tart, that was creamy and just the right amount of tartness to it.

Checking in was painless and the staff pleasant. Room is typical European traditional logging, which amounts to a smallish room and no frills. Bd is soft and comfy, with the bathroom small and functional. Drinks in the lobby bar were great. They have 18 or so selections of gin (mulberry, rhubarb, dandelion and traditional). Drinks were cheap, with their single gin & tonic at £4 and doubles at £6. Very well presented and tasty. Dinner in the dining room was again a pleasant experience. Appetizer of creamy mushrooms on ciabatta with crumbled Stilton was wonderful. Wife had the steak & ale pie. I had the salmon with potatoes and asparagus. Both dishes were grand. Very tasty and well presented. Loved the quaint atmosphere of The Hand Hotel. Plus, there is the Chirk Castle just a bit away to occupy your day.

The place is filled will green, huge hollow rhododendrons, wooden steps, follies, tunnels, rocks coloured with copper and branches arching, dripping with berries. The root covered paths are lined with raspberry and bramble bushes, and beautiful views off cliffs and through expanses of corn off to the horizon, leading to caves, grottos and arches. The twisting old trees are fit for tolkien, and I think I'm right in bits of Narnia being filmed here. It's a lot of unavoidable steps, so unsuitable for wheelchairs and prams unfortunately. Best on a dry day to avoid slippery rocks and carved steps, wear sensible shoes, take a bottle of a water and a torch (some tunnels are purposely not lit) and I'd also advise a picnic, partly because picnics are the best thing ever, but also because the tea room is pants!

The creaky floorboards carried through from the hallway to my room and were a little annoying, especially late at night. The bathroom was not fitted to a particularly high standard and felt even more tired than the rest of the room. I was disturbed several times during the night by other rowdy guests, but that was not the hotel's fault and to the further credit of the staff, were quick to tell the noise makers to keep it down when other guests complained. Free wi-fi, albeit slow. Gideon Bible ninjas had done their work and placed a book in my bedside table. Great success.
