I had a frozen pipe emergency during freezing weather with no heat in the house. They came out, charged me $300, and didn't even provide a proper diagnosis. I was told it "might be" a broken circulator -- no certainty, no testing, just speculation. Meanwhile, they created a dripping valve, and they didn't even bother to tighten it despite my requesr. They said they would send an estimate and never did -- not for two days -- while we were literally shivering in the cold. When I finally followed up, they sent a $2,100 estimate to replace the circulator and fix the valve. Thankfully, I decided to call another plumber. Within 20 minutes, the frozen pipe was fixed with much cheaper. I was told there was absolutely nothing wrong with the circulator or the valve. The dripping valve? Tightened in a few second. I paid $300 for guesswork, delay, and unnecessary upselling during an emergency situation. This felt like an attempt to take advantage of a homeowner in distress. I would strongly caution anyone considering this company to think twice.

We had to pay almost $2,000 to fix a tiny thing because, cunningly, they've figured out they can rake in much more money by charging separately for every "step." These "steps," mind you, used to be considered part of "doing the job," but are now billed separately by this company, which apparently has been taken over by a private equity firm, which explains it. For each "step," they shove an iPad in your face and demand your signature: Eg: --driving to your home (in this case, about 10 miles from Woburn): about $300 --diagnosing the problem: $600 --driving to get the necessary spare part (about 5 miles and back), which was so basic they should have had it on the truck: about $250 --cost of spare part: $200 --installing the spare part, which took about 30 minutes: $600 Interestingly, when we received the bill, it did NOT itemize these charges in terms of the dollar amount for each, instead it listed by units (eg "1:00 troubleshooting," "1:00 parts pickup"). We will never use this company again. Even though it was the company that installed the system, for which we paid 28K just a few years ago (no longer under their 2-year warranty). This maintenance visit showed that they're clearly more interested in making bank than actually building customer loyalty. Companies are entitled to make money. This is something else altogether. We never write reviews, but hope this one will serve as a warning to people needing HVAC services but unable to afford truly exploitative upcharging.

We're a small collective that shares stories from freelance and contract workers who've been…read moretreated unfairly. This is one of those stories. A contractor was hired by this company to build a fully functional website on a rushed timeline. They were told they were the only person working on the project, and that the urgency was due to the company's former developer being in a legal dispute and planning to take down the live site by June 1st, 2025. The contractor dropped everything to help and finished the site two weeks before the deadline. Over the course of several weeks, the contractor even went to their office multiple times for meetings with the owner's son and other team members, working in good faith to move the project forward. After the work was done, it came to light that two or three other people were also working on the same site, despite the company claiming otherwise from the start. When the contractor followed up for payment, the owner's son who was the main point of contact allegedly said "My boy could do it for less than $1,000, so our initial agreement on price is gonna be a lot less now." He also added he was going on vacation in 15 days and "didn't have time to deal with it." All this while wearing an expensive Rolex. The contractor was told, "Send me the invoice I'll pay you for your time." The invoice was sent immediately, and the son followed up once more saying, "I'll get back to you." After that, he went completely silent no reply, no payment. The contractor was left dismissed and disrespected. The stress and anxiety from this on top of an existing heart condition led to serious mental and physical strain. Legal steps have since been taken. This post is meant to warn others if you're a freelancer, contractor, or subcontractor, be cautious. Get everything in writing, and don't ignore red flags. No one should be pressured, misled, ghosted, or lowballed after showing up, putting in the time, and delivering their end of the deal.

My old steam boiler developed a…read morecracked heat exchanger, and Max Heating was prompt, informative, and willing to do the replacement during the New Year holiday. Dan and Sam have been stand-out with the depth of their answers to my questions. I appreciate that immensely as a demonstration of how much they care about the subject matter, and how much they care about ensuring I'm properly informed on what is happening. Sam and his crew were out all day yesterday dismantling the old boiler and installing the new one. They were friendly and engaged the whole time letting me observe the process. Sam called me over throughout to show me up close what had corroded in my old boiler, and to explain to me how it happened. He did the same during install of the new boiler to demonstrate all the critical aspects for maintenance--including letting me unscrew and rescrew a piece to practice for future cleaning. The new boiler is running smoothly right now. I feel like I understand its pieces. Sam even took an interest in diagnosing why my bathroom heating panel (which has never worked) wasn't heating. He cleaned out its vent and it has heat now. My cat is very happy to be warm right now. From the way Sam and his crew talked through all the aspects of the work they were doing, it was clear they take pride in the quality of the work. This wasn't just a job to get over and done with. And what's more, they did it for $2k cheaper than my competing quote. Max Heating and Cooling will be the first people I call for any plumbing projects I have going forward.

They were hired to upgrade an electrical panel and install and heat pump hot water heater. From the beginning, there were some red flags. The wrong team (insulation) showed up for an energy audit for HVAC services. I was sent a quote intended for another customer - and it took over a week of back-and-forth with three people to get the right quote. Still, I signed up because I've had some sub-optimal experiences with small contractors, and the larger Homeworks organization appealed to me. I was also buying the convenience of one-stop shopping for MassSave and Heat Loan processing. Big mistake. One year update: 1) Heat pump hot water heater does not work. 2) I have been bounced-around to numerous people. In total, at least 20 people have been involved in the installation of the hot water heater. 3) I ended up directly managing the subs on the project (plumbing and electrical). This was done out of necessity, not preference. 4) A final electrical inspection was done, and then re-scheduled twice because the electrician didn't have a process for accurately recording project inspection status. 5) I am convinced that decarbonization/electrification efforts in progressive states like Massachusetts will fail if my experience is at all indicative of what it's like trying to replace gas-fired equipment. I should note that the quality of the work performed, once it was performed, was quite good. The issues with Homeworks are less about the work done in the home and more about the people working in the office. This company is in desperate need of restructuring, overhead reduction, and a stronger focus on operations. It would be a good business school case study. If you can find good contractors, I recommend hiring direct and navigating rebates and Heat Loan financing on your own. Avoid the Homeworks morass if you can!
