We recently stayed in Merida, and we did a lot of walking in the hot summer. One of the things we struggled with was finding a place to eat - one that was economical for our family of 4 but also with a variety on the menu to accommodate everyone. We happened across Cafe Montejo and ended up going back for a second time! The Cafe has a very lovely courtyard to eat in, and it was nice to have an outdoor table. There are also bag stands, fans, and incense to keep the bugs away. The menu is quite large, from a variety of drinks to different food options. My one daughter is quite picky and has a nut allergy, and she had no problem finding something she wanted to eat. We enjoyed a variety of foods, from giant pancakes with nutella, to eggs and chilaquiles. I enjoyed coffee (Cafe Americano style) and fresh fruit. The service was great and the servers were very friendly and helpful, and spoke English as well.

The service was great, and the food was amazing. True representation of the local cuisine. Drinks were very refreshing and everything is reasonably priced

Café Montejo offers a variety of food, our group of eleven people can be at times hard to accommodate, finding the space and food that will accommodate a variety of palates was easily done at Cafe Montejo. We enjoyed the outdoor tables, patient wait staff and good coffee!

We were headed to check out the neighborhood around Parque Santiago, so my husband did a quick search for someplace to grab breakfast and found Café Montejo. The front is very unassuming. You can easily walk past it aside from a small standing sign on the sidewalk. We have seen pre-COVID pictures of tables on the sidewalk, making it easier to find. Once through the doorway, you step into a nice size courtyard garden set with about eight tables with giant umbrellas. It's super cute, quiet and there are lots of plants throughout. For a while, the only sound came from the windchimes. As expected, with COVID restrictions, all of the staff were wearing masks, and the menu was available by scanning a QR Code. The staff was amazingly helpful and friendly and worked with us as we tried to order in our very basic Spanish. My husband was excited to see Hot Cakes ($95) with either Ham or Bacon on the menu. He got three plate size pancakes with four nice slices of Ham. They were excellent, and the staff was happy to bring him extra packets of Maple Syrup. I opted for the Huevos Divorciados ($115). The dish had two Fried Eggs on crispy Corn Tortillas, separated with rolls of sliced Ham. One egg was topped with Red Sauce and the other with Green Sauce. There were served with delicious fried Plantain, Black Beans, and some Toast rounds. The eggs were perfectly cooked, the sauces were flavorful, and there was plenty to eat. We also had a Coffee Americano ($30) and a Coca-Cola Lite ($25). While the food and service were excellent, the highlight of our breakfast was our lesson on Chocolate. We could see a woman running a belt-driven grinder in the corner of the patio, and our server told us they were making Chocolate. He told us about the beans that were roasted and then ground. First, she ground Canela (Cinnamon), Sugar, and Peanuts. Then she followed that by grinding roasted Cacao beans and combining them. It smelled incredible, and she was very happy for me to watch her work. There was a small table with their Cocoa and a few sauces packaged for sale as we left. They had a spicy Salsa with Peanuts on our table, which we never tried - we saw it again in jars and looking back which we had bought some. It sounds really interesting. Charming place, the food was excellent, and we'd go back to try more of the menu. Two notes at the risk of stating the obvious - the $ in Mexico denotes Pesos. So, don't be alarmed if you've been to more touristy areas in Mexico where prices are in US dollars. At the time of dining, our costs in US dollars were: Hot Cakes with Ham - 95 pesos or about $4.75 Huevos Divorciados - 115 pesos or about $5.75 Café Americano - 30 pesos or about $1.50 Coca-Cola Lite - 25 pesos or about $1.25

A nice little unassuming place. You go in a garage door like opening and are seated in a patio garden. The waiters were attentive and friendly and even changed out the seats when they saw that we were having a bit of trouble with the chairs they had at the table. We were there for breakfast and had motulenos (a local breakfast dish), scrambled eggs Mexican style (with plantains and beans), and pancakes. The chocolate frappe was also a great treat to beat the humidity. The service was good and the prices reasonable.

We went here for a quick breakfast and it was delicious! We both got huevos, I got rancheros and he got motuleños. Both were great! And the orange juice was fantastic! Great little spot to go!
