When in Rome--or Paris, I should say--how could one not give escargot a go-go? I've tried it at several places, and this is one of the best I've had, in my non-native opinion. And If you're an American and skeptical of escargot? It's really mostly a device to deliver a little butter bomb of goodness. And the ritual of securing it and extracting the succulent little treat part of the fun. Other food we had here was mostly excellent as well. We shared both a Niçoise salad chock full of excellent items--a bit oily for my taste but otherwise flavorful and fresh. Also shared a lovely seafood paella. Rich and full of seafood if perhaps a tad salty. Was also particularly impressed with the cocktails--inventive and tasty, we tried both the English Harvest (featuring gin, calvados brandy and orgeat) and the Penicilline, a whiskey with lemon, honey and ginger concoction. The wine was just fine (bien sur, en France) and they are open late--we sat down after 10 after a long day of sightseeing and enjoyed the small but charming outdoor seating and fine service and food at this lovely spot (all for a reasonable 80 euros). read more

I came here with a friend on a rainy Saturday afternoon in November 2021 around 12:45 pm. The café is located in a bustling part of Oberkampf. The ambiance was very cozy, perfect for the cold and rainy weather, mostly due to the warm-toned lighting and décor. The lunch rush hour was pretty much in full swing when we arrived but we were able to be seated immediately. The menu was really varied, with items ranging from Asian (chicken satay, bo bun), American (smash burger, brisket burger), to traditional French (croque monsieur, foie gras, steak). My friend and I split a foie gras appetizer, which was served with a few slices of toasted bread and a caramelized onion spread which complemented the savory foie gras and that I really enjoyed. For my main, I got the croque madame, which was made with homemade bread and served with a side of crispy fries and green salad. Since I had filled up on the foie gras I could only manage about half of it before my friend finished the rest off, but it was well-made, very tasty and buttery. For dessert my friend and I got 2 profiteroles, which can be ordered as a single, a pair or a trio (with the per-unit price going down the more you order). These were delicious, with the server pouring the chocolate sauce over the pastries at the table. My friend and I also shared a pot of mint tea which was served in some cute Moroccan-style teaware. The restaurant is a nice place to grab a meal in a very Parisian atmosphere. The food was good, with a typical price/quality/quantity ratio for Paris. Worth a try if you're in Oberkampf! read more

After walking past this place on a regular basis, I decided to take three friends here for Sunday brunch... At 19€, it was a little on the expensive side for what you get: Orange juice Coffee A piece of bread A piece of French toast Savoury yoghurt Tomato salad Scrambled egg with salmon Fruit salad ... Seems like a lot, but it was small servings of each thing, and didn't come with extra breads or viennoises like most brunches I've been to. More baguette would have been nice for the fromage blanc as it was savoury and not the best to eat so much of with a spoon. This place is a good place to stop on Oberkampf. We were looking for a good place to go out in Paris and found Oberkampf. We got simple drinks, Guinness and whiskey. There didn't seem to be many tourists here. It was late on a Friday night. The ambience was good, I really like the way the place is decorated and the food I saw come out looked delicious. This is a fine place to drink, especially when its not too crowded (as in 1 am-4 am on the weekend) Admittedly, it's a bit grungy, but at least it's not pretentious. The burgers here are pretty damn good for Paris. Here you have the perfect bun to patty ratio. Not too much bread, and easy to fit in your mouth (assuming you eat it with your hands like the rest of the civilized world, of course if you use a fork and knife like most Parisians then it doesn't really matter how monstrous the burger is). I recommend ordering it well done because otherwise the meat will be too juicy and it will make your bun very soggy and sticky. The "fancy sauce" or pseudo- thousand island dressing that comes with the fries is also super indulgent and delicious. read more

With a traditional smattering of tables outside the front, this is a nice place to sit down, grab a coffee and watch the world go by. Huge disappointment. I am embarrassed to have brought my friends there. All the food was cold and the sea food was uncleaned. When we asked the waiter about the shit filled shrimp they became super defensive and refused to compensate us for the inedible food. Well those who came before me must have been to a different restaurant to the one we attended! The setting IS dark but that adds to its cosy charm & atmosphere - with which I say it overflows. Ceilings are lavishly high and walls are mainly of dark wood with huge mirrors that bounce a warm reddish glow around the room. Pictures of ladies and gents dancing in the 1800s (perhaps original? If not then definitely in the style of) adorn the tops of the walls. Old fashioned dentist-style lights protrude from walls while modern, metallic fixtures hang from the ceiling. The DJ plays mesmerising, relaxed, rhythmic beats from what can almost be described as a pulpit above the bar, accessible only by ladder. The passageway walls to the WCs is backlit sheet metal with crosses cut in. Do you get what I'm saying? Yes, it's dark, it's quirky, Yes it's a mix of 'tired' and modern but to my mind it is not neglected, it's a considered balance; a fabulous funky venue for the nocturnal venue lover. Were advised to go there but then walked in, by chance, during happy hour (1700 - i think - to 2000hrs). Lovely pastry tasters and other nibbles on the bar. Friendly staff so we reserved a table & I'm glad we did. It probably started to fill around 9pm - with a totally cosmopolitan crowd. American tourists, French middle aged locals, young couples, groups of friends, students and even a family with children. The atmosphere was fantastic, the food was very enjoyable & the table service was very friendly / helpful (smiling with encouraging amusement as we determinedly overrode her English to order and converse in French!). If you are expecting chic then I would point you elsewhere but if it's unique you're after then it will tick the box. read more

Cafe Charbon does a consistently good steak tartare salad and is a classic location in the Oberkampf area. Little bit annoying last time I was there that there was a very loud band in the main area - cool that they have that gallery space for entertainment but they also have a large back room for gigs which would have meant I could have heard my friend speak. Staff are nice although generally can't speak English so make sure you've practised your food ordering words beforehand! read more

While the food is okay, the service is terrible. Maybe an off night but sitting without drinks, no water, no food, and no waiter is unpleasant. Never again. The first beer I was served had some black stuff annealed to the glass. You know what it looks like when you put a little sugar cube in a glass of champagne and it fizzes up around it? Just like that but it was black gunk in beer; not nice. When this was pointed out to the staff they said "we'll comp it". Nice, the black gunk is free! read more

Apparently Cafe Charbon heralded the cafe/bar thing in the Oberkampf area, so I thought I'd check it out. It's an okay place if you want some relatively cheap alcohol and what is essentially pub grub, but the atmosphere is somewhat grungy and dingy. I loved the decor and bar in this restaurant, very cute. Our waiter and server spoke more than enough English to help us with the menu and were really friendly. I had a roast chicken that was delicious with some perfect potatoes. Large pieces of meat at the neighboring tables looked amazing. The sausage and the squid were well received at our table. Good, not great. Much like many of the other restaurants on Oberkampf this place had great ambience and the drinks are well made, but the food is also a little lackluster and pricey. On the weekends this place tends to be packed and mostly a bar. This place is attached to Nouveau Casino so expect it to be loud and filled with young trendy types on the weekends. During the weekdays it's more of less people who live in the neighborhood. Come here during the weekday for coffee, drinks, and maybe something small. read more

Very much a bar. Gets lively on evenings people go out. DJ at night. The atmosphere is considerably better than the fare. Bar service and the food are nothing special. Limited choice of wine and liquor. Food is simple. Hamburger type fare. So I would only really go to experience the crowd and the vibe. Avoid duing the day therefore when it's nothing at all special. What a brunch ! I highly recommend this to anybody who is staying in Paris for the weekend. Have their fantastic brunch between 12.00 - 17.00 for Eur. 18,- and you are not feeling hungry for the rest of the day. The waiters are very friendly. Fantastic ambience, delicious food and pretty reasonable prices. We had a 3 course meal for under 70 Euros. Low light (which I prefer) and the distinctively Parisian decor made for a romantic dinner for two but not in a cheesy way. Reminded me of a great restaurant/ bar in Auckland called SPQR. Very fun atmosphere later in the night; the drinks are on the pricey side for what you get, but most weekend nights they have a DJ and it's a nice balance of bar and club. Plus location is great, tons of fun bars everywhere. read more
