    Pizza Bresaola al Rucola.

Dinner in medieval San Gimignano. We selected Caffeteria dell'Olmo for dinner during our later afternoon and evening visit to San Gimignano. The restaurant is located right in the center of the picturesque town on Piazza della Cisterna. It couldn't be any more centrally located! We dined outside on the piazza and under umbrellas. It began to drizzle during dinner but we were dry! The menu at Caffeteria dell'Olmo offered a good selection of pizza and that was what we ordered. I had a Pizza Bresaola al Rucola (thinly sliced beef with arugula or rocket) and Susan a Pizza Margherita. Both were really delicious, the atmosphere just adding to it! After dinner, we stooped at the adjacent Gelateria dell'Olmo for a cup each of gelato. (Italian ice cream is the best!)

This place is very busy because it's at the city center where the big square is. A lot of outdoor seating. We got here very late most places closed at 2:30pm so we have not many choices. The price is decent but nothing stand out on the food. The service is very slow, it took a while for each course to come so plan to dine for at least an hour. The pasta was a bit undercooked, still pretty hard in the center, ragu has food flavor but the sage is a bit overpowering, the tripe is traditional Tuscan food they did an ok job here, some prices are way too big. And the flavor could be better instead of just the tomato flavor:

This gelato is the best, just as the sign says. We tried the other gelato on the square but this one was much better. Highly recommend!

It is located in the heart of Piazza della Cisterna, the award-winning gelateria is known for its rich, ultra-creamy textures, high-quality local ingredients, and inventive flavors created by master gelato maker Sergio Dondoli. While classics like pistachio and chocolate are exceptional, the shop is especially famous for creative combinations such as saffron and pine nut cream or pink grapefruit with sparkling wine. We tried Rosemary Baby (Raspberry and Tuscan rosemary) and safron and pine nut cream gelato. Nothing like we ever tasted...The atmosphere is lively and energetic, with long lines that reflect its international reputation. We waited in line about 30 minutes but was well worth it. Despite the long line and higher prices, Gelateria Dondoli remains a must-visit destination. Enjoying a cone beneath the medieval towers of San Gimignano turned the experience into more than dessert...it becomes part of the town's charm, and unique character.

When we visited, there was a line about 15 people deep out the door, but it moved reasonably quickly. They offer a wide range of unique flavors -- things like rosemary, lavender, and other creative combinations you don't usually see. It makes for a fun experience trying something different. All the flavors we tried were good, and overall the gelato was excellent. We've had some incredible gelato elsewhere in Italy, but this was still very enjoyable. Worth stopping in if you're in San Gimignano. Grab some and enjoy by the well in the center of the piazza.

Where as the outside patio offers heaters in the winter time, we picked inside. With a friendly atmosphere, it made it easier to sit quickly and get served. Many Italian dishes to choose from. As we had been traveling abroad for 2 weeks, we were ready for a menu change. Bar Piazzetta gave us just that! So many choices to pick, and with such interesting descriptions of the food, we went with a burger and chicken dish. The burger showed up smothered with cheese, onions, mushrooms, and bread with "salad" on the side. The thin bread helped to maintain the original flavor by not overwhelming it with a "bread" taste. The chicken dish was stewed in tomatoes, garlic, onions, pepper; and came with a salad on the side. This dish was superb! The chicken was so tender, the garlic was tasty, and the veggies had a slight crisp to them; everything married well together and was top notch! Service was friendly, place was clean and even when busy, we were attended to very quickly. San Gimignano is a SMALL cute little walled medieval village and this place was exactly what we were looking for. If you ever have the opportunity to visit here...you will not be disappointed!

On an especially humid, warm day, the shaded patio was just what we needed. We decided to stay for dinner after having drinks, and the food was fairly good. Between four of us, we ordered some caprese salads (very good!), two pizzas (prosciutto and margherita, both good), lasagna, which was cold in the middle and not what Americans might expect (it was mostly cheese and noodles with very little red sauce), and traditional spaghetti with a red sauce with pork and beef that was amazing! Service was fine. Nothing bad, nothing insanely great. I'd come back; the prices were reasonable, the location is tops, and the handmade pasta is really great.
