Overall, this place was good. Service was fine and entrees came out fairly quickly. The enchiladas Rojas were flavorful. The hubs got chicken enchiladas and those were good to. We started out with the chorizo quesadillas. Those were excellent. We didn't get charged for chips and salsa, like others mentioned. But they didn't refill the salsa once we finished. Writing on behalf of my angry girlfriend, after her disappointing dinner with her brother. What follows is a word for word account. "It was SOOO bad. First off, we were not planning to go here, but had to adjust when the the Union Square Tavern was closed. The back patio was nice, and I thought it would be a good place, and then the chips and salsa came. They tasted like cardboard. No really, cardboard chips....which is curious, because Tostitos that have been opened and sat in the back window of a car would taste better. If I dropped them on on the floor, the ants would just walk on by. We also ordered guacamole. The guac. was not bad, but it wasn't much better than pre-made stuff you get at the grocery counter. "So we are chatting, having a nice time, and I'm not paying attention to the menu, and realize the prices. $18 for an enchilada. No tacos for less than $9. And then we noticed that the guacamole cost $9.50. Worst off, if you don't order an entree, the chips and salsa are $9.25. So we were stuck either ordering crap food for another $40 or tossing the $18.75 we already wasted. "We left, found a nice ramen place nearby, and had a great meal; they (ramen place) did a job a good job on my burger." After reviewing this word for word account, my lady friend pointed out that she never mentioned any ants, that it should not be about the ramen place, and that she did pay becuase this account kinda leaves that in question. I have mixed feelings about this review. We usually go to Sol Azteca Brookline which I would unreservedly give 5 stars each and every time. We recently moved and this is the 2nd time we went to Sol Azteca Newton. Neither time was the food really anything to remark on. My fish tacos yesterday were soggy and tasteless. They may have been soggy because we waited 45 minutes to get our first drinks and even though we asked to order food simultaneously, it took even longer to get the food. The family beside us who came in about 20 minutes later was already finishing their entree when we got our food. I am torn bc the staff was very friendly and apologetic. But they were VERY stressed, rushing, and red-faced even though the restaurant was maybe half filled. I suggest going out of your way and traveling to the Brookline restaurant for a truly great experience. [No - I do not work for them, know anyone who works for them nor have any interest except enjoying my meal. My 10th-anniversary dinner fell quite short except for the company of my husband and the family beside us.] read more

I'm angry. Went to Cafe Sol Azteca for drinks and appetizers. Was seated immediately outdoors - off to a good start. Chips and salsa brought to the table right away...good! We started on the chips and our server came over to take our drink order. We mentioned that we were just ordering appetizers and having cocktails and he told us that he would have to charge us $6.00 for the chips that we just ate because they are only included if you order an entree. Peeved me right off. We had one drink, some incredibly mediocre and overpriced appetizers and could not wait to get out of there. Cafe...you let me down. Oof. You guys, this place is so bad. I grew up in Newton, and I have to say, if I had known how sub-par and overpriced all the local restaurants were, I would have wasted less energy trying to get my parents to take me out to dinner. Deceptively cute decor. Decent yet slightly syrupy margaritas. Stale chips. The guacamole was an unceremonious dump on a sad piece of romaine lettuce, and the queso was a joke. Even mediocre Tostitos queso (bless its heart) is at least the right consistency - this queso was a tasteless, melted gum eraser sitting under a pool of oil. Even my post-baby-birth friend who was desperate to get out of the house and would have eaten pencil shavings as long as they were accompanied by adult conversation noticed how bad it was when hot, and how it congealed into a gummy cheese pancake as it cooled. AND WE ATE IT ANYWAY. BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU DO WITH QUESO. Damn you, Cafe Sol Azteca, for exploiting human weakness! The entrees were blah, with dried out rice, a little warm quicksand pool of refried beans, and some actually rather delightful vinegary cabbage slaw. PAINFULLY slow service, during all the worst times (waiting for drink order; waiting for the check to get picked up). The grand total for this disappointment? With tip, because we're not assholes? $50 each. Even for $30 I'd consider coming back, but these prices are just blatantly gouging Newton millionaires, and as a former resident of this fair city, I'm insulted at the insinuation that rich white Jews have no tastebuds. read more

I live in Newton Centre and I have children, so I have tried this place ~8 times. My kids enjoy eating on the outdoor patio, which is located in a back alley next to a Japanese place and the Union Street restaraunt. The patio has a fun atmosphere on warm nights and the sangria is above average. The food is average for a Mexican restaraunt. Not good. Not terrible. After trying over a dozen dishes, I can't say that I would recommend any to a friend. The chips and salsa are complimentary, and the salsa is always fresh and delicious. The positives end there. The service is consistently below average. On a recent visit, the waitress gave me a warm beer. I mentioned this to her in a polite manner and she grabbed the beer bottle off the table and returned 10 minutes later. She didn't say a single word to us. She SLAMMED a new bottle of cold beer right in front of me and splashed me with the beer before stomping away.... again without saying a single word. Her name was Gisele on the dinner receipt (she didn't introduce herself by saying her name, so I'm not 100% sure that her name was Gisele). When she stopped by to leave the check I said to her, "Did I say something wrong or make you angry about the warm beer." She replied, "No, I'm just busy tonight." No apology for spraying me with beer. No kind words. She had a pretty thick accent, so perhaps it is a cultural thing. I am not a confrontational person, so I didn't complain to the manager. You may wonder why I have tried this place so many times, despite the mediocre food and poor service.... the proximity to my home, the sangria/beer, chips/salsa, and the atmosphere on the patio are the reason. I really like Sol Azteca. But I hate going there. Its one of those places that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, even though it has nothing to do with the delicious margs (a bit overpriced but good) and guac. I went on a first date there with one of the biggest douchebags in Boston. I wish I could yelp him haha. I should have known when only spoke out of one side of his mouth, when he told me he shaved his whole body (gag!) and spent most nights out in Southie with his yay'd out friends. But back to business -- the food is clean at Sol Azteca. Which is not a word I would usually use for Mexican. But the plate isn't overrun by tons of flavors and sauces. They usually keep it classy and straight Mexican. I love all the tiling inside (same as the tiles in my old house in New Mexico!) and I wish I owned one of those sweet Mexican dresses the waitresses wear. They are always super cute and don't mind if you speak in Spanish (even if you mangle it a bit). So go ahead and practice while getting yourself some classic Mejicana cuisine! Raised my kids on their chips and salsa, enchiladas verdes, and guacamole. Sitting outside on a warm evening in Newton is a treat, the waitstaff has been there for years and knows your name. I love this place very much, it's another childhood classic. I like that you have to go through an alley to find it -- no matter which door you enter through. I like the outdoor seating, even though the dim lighting on later summer nights has a tendency to convince me to order chicken livers, which is always a bad idea, no matter who cooks them. Alright, alright, I've said a lot of hateful things since I moved to New England about Mexican food. Ok, so they were all well deserved but there were some blanket statements made (It all sucks, I've had more flavorful cardboard, etc). But on occassion I let that "I'm a Woman and I'm Never Wrong" mentality go, painful as it may be, and admit that I was wrong. And I was wrong. It's not ALL bad here in Boston, in fact, Cafe Sol Azteca is freakin fabulous. It's really easy to jack up a mole sauce and wind up with chocolate sauce with some habenero in it but, oooooh maaah gawd it was perfect. Sangria was a fabulous blend of fruityness without being overly sweet. Even the salsa was fresh and spicy! So for making me soooooo happy I'll forgive them for making me wrong and head back to their super cute patio for another cocktail. read more

I LOOOVE Mexican food. When I moved to Newton Centre 11 years ago, I was thrilled to see that there was a Mexican restaurant a few short blocks from my house. I asked around, and people said it was good so I was juiced to give it a try. What a waste! I've been patient enough to return to Sol Azteca at least once a year the whole time I've lived in Newton. I live in the apparently futile hope that the owners will either learn how or hire someone who knows how to cook. Without a doubt, this is some of the WORST Mexican food on the planet. The salsa is weak and watery, the chips are insanely thick, always cold, rarely salted and frequently stale, and while the menu is well written, the food prepared from it has never once even begun to match the description. I've had everything from enchiladas with cold fillings served with grated (not melted) cheese on them to carne asada that was cooked so long (and not marinated nearly long enough) that it was so tough I literally could not chew it. The mole sauce some are raving about? All I can conclude is that these people have never had properly prepared mole sauce. Thin, dark & flavorless, it's bloody awful. And the chicken was drowning in it, but then if I had to have my moment of culinary glory in such a flavorless pond, I'd drown myself, too!. I've never gotten the same margarita twice, although I've ordered it! In the same visit, I've gone from a treacly-sweet marg that was worse than anything pre-mixed from a liquor store to one so sour that even I (who eats limes & lemons) could not finish it. At least half of the times I have visited, my beer has been warm and served to me with a glass hot from the dishwasher (a TOTAL pet peeve of mine). For 11 years, I have marveled at this restaurant's ability to stay in business in two expensive real estate locales (they have another location on westbound Beacon Street in Brookline near Fenway Park). I've concluded that Bostonians, while palate-educated in most cuisines, must not know a damned thing about Mexican food. I've spent too much time in the southwest to let this ridiculous excuse for a restaurant get a pass. Please, Sol Azteca - do Newton Centre a favor & vacate your prime spot for a restaurant worth visiting! If you crave Mexican food, just swing over to Stop & Shop and pick up some Old El Paso. I don't think it's good, but it is infinitely better than anything you'll be served at Sol Azteca. read more

I love Cafe Sol Azteca when I want to go out for a quick bite to eat. Seriously, once you order they are SO FAST. I guess because they've got such a small space, they've perfected getting people in and out quick. This only holds true obviously if you don't get there at the most popular times and end up waiting for half an hour (which does happen on nice evenings in the summer with people waiting for the nice outdoor seating). I love all the enchiladas, and haven't explored the menu much beyond that. The servings are generous, and I always leave full and happy. read more

The only reason this place is getting two stars (instead of one) is b/c it's fair/decent mexican food for BOSTON. If this restaurant were anywhere else, I'd give it 0-1 stars. Chips were cold, salsa had no kick and was runny (as in, no chunks of tomatoes or onions). I had sangria, which I realize is not really authentic mex, but it was NOT GOOD. No fruit, entirely too sweet, and you couldn't see through it (sangria should be translucent, not opaque). The last and biggest offense... the $$$. For fair to middlin' mexican food, this place has some pretty steep prices (many entrees were between $15-20). In all honesty, if given the choice between taco bell and this place, I'd probably choose Taco Bell. The good? Outdoor seating, nice enough service, location, and friendly for larger groups. Where to begin? Definitely the complementary salsa and chips. If you're smart, you stop there too. Maybe have a beer or a margarita and then go somewhere else. I stopped here because I was in a rush. The service was fast and the food was as well. As in it was like fast food. I haven't had Taco Bell in a long time but I think it was probably not much worse than this. The beans were oddly disturbing to look at. Tacos looked like they were made yesterday and then microwaved to serve. Rice had been overcooked and reheated to the point it almost hurt to chew. The sangria was good and so were the margaritas. The patio is very comfortable and because is it between two buildings it is shaded, but you still get benefits of being outside. It is not fancy, but it is comfortable and a good place to meet up with friends. The food was average. I had the Enchiladas Verde and they were decent. I grew up in Los Angeles and lived in the Southwest most of my life, so it is hard to say that this is good authentic Mexican, but it was good for the area. The only negative that was truly a detractor from going here is that the wait staff was a bit hurried. It wasn't really that busy and it felt like they were in a rush for you to leave. I heard great things about this restaurant, but sadly i have no desire on ever going back to this place. As a party of two on a friday night we decided to go ahead and do the call ahead seating as suggested for 8 pm, we arrived at 745 pm and was then put on a waiting list, did i mention the end of the waiting list. The host looked very scattered and frazzled by the number of people waiting to be seated. We finally got seated inside, when we asked for outdoor, but at that point we were starving and just wanted to sit. Got inside and was sat at the very back in a corner, where food trays were kept so it was cramped. After waiting for about 10 minutes our waiter finally came over and took our drink order, we ordered a frozen strawberry margarita and a margarita on the rocks no salt. The margarita on rocks came first with salt, about 10 to 15 minutes later, my frozen regular margarita came. Now food wise, hearing this was an authentic Mexican restaurant i was excited only to be extremely disappointed by the overpriced and limited menu options. We ordered queso as an app, what we got was a small dish of melted mozzarella cheese with three pieces of "chorizo" on top. Tried once piece and a pile of oil and grease filled more of the bowl than cheese. ABSOLUTELY GROSS. Later the queso was taken away and we did mention it just wasn't very good at all. Later our entrees of tacos arrived..cold and mushy. Expecting a crunchy shell with hot beef inside, i received two mushy shells with cold rice and the beef was terrible, i barely touched my plate. Overall we left unsatisfied and still hungry. I would not recommend this restaurant if you are looking for an affordable and delicious Mexican meal! read more

I was having one of those days. You know the kind. An emergency at work, a meeting that last an hour and a half longer than it should, and I finally hit the road after working for 12 hours. All I could think about was how much I needed a drink. My cell phone rings, do I want to meet some friends at Cafe Sol Azteca? Why yes, yes I do. I am in desperate need of a delicious margarita. Let's start with the aforementioned margarita. Frozen, strawberry, no salt. It's the way they should all be made. With the first sip, I tasted tequila, which let me know right away that I wasn't just drinking the mix and ice. It was sweet but not too sweet, and filled with huge chunks of strawberries. Yes, they clogged my straw a bit, but so worth it! Cover the world in black beans, and I will eat it. My big problem with them is that I have an allergy to cilantro. Ok, I may not be ~technically~ allergic, but there is little in the world that is worse than cilantro. Anyway, most Mexican joints cover everything in cilantro, especially the black beans. The thing is, they are delicious without that crap. So when I ordered the Beef Tostadas, I asked for no cilantro. They waiter told me that there is no cilantro in the dish. Whaaaa? Are you sure? I believed he knew what he was talking about, but I was skeptical all the same. Simply put, the dish was awesome. Huge portion, so I have lunch for tomorrow. My friends ordered the Tostada Oaxaca, the Enchiladas Verdes, and my friend that ordered the Tostada Carnitas special was so enthralled by his meal that he insisted everyone try it. Relatively acceptable Mexican food given WHERE we are. At this point, I've decided it's hopeless to hold out for anything really good in this state, or maybe even in this entire region. Approximately the closest place to Boston for true Mexican is somewhere in the region of Chicago. At any rate, this restaurant serves all the standard menu items and does it in a tolerable manner. The better aspect of this restaurant is the location and the partial outdoor setting, which is very lovely in summer. I think it's about the end of things when a restaurant is being praised for the setting more than the food, but that's about the story when it comes to Mexican in the Boston area. read more

Wow, can't believe I have not reviewed SA yet! A low rating for "high priced" food is not a valid rating. A low rating for "over priced" food, however, would be. Yes - Sol Azteca has pricier food than say, Border Cafe.. but the food is LEAGUES better. Like, 20,000 LEAGUES under the sea - thats the kind of LEAGUE I am talking about. Having been several times, I have sampled many items. Sometimes, I will admit, I am only "ho-hum" about the dish.. and that's usually when I get something "authentic". However, even a "ho-hum" dish, like simple enchiladas or tostadas, will come with the most amazing rice and beans I've had in a mexican restaurant. I don't know what it is - but they really have incredible stuff. The picco de gallo is fantastic, as well - along side the super fresh and addicting guac, and real salsa. Not crappy jarred stuff that some other places get from a food supplier or Costco. This stuff is real, and you can taste each ingredient. The chips are great, too - fresh and even hot at times. It has a really nice atmosphere inside, and a absolutely fantastic patio outside. Its tiered and well organized - and for those who haven't been, its in a courtyard between buildings - there's no street to be seen. Totally secluded and very nice. Drinks are good - and if you are nice, they offer them while you wait for a table. Now the reason I came here - TACOS RANCHEROS. The greatest mexican meal I've ever had. I still don't know what they did to the magical beef in these tacos, or what the heavenly cheese was, but these soft tacos were un-freakin-real. I thought of them last night while I ate a beef soft taco at Border Cafe.. and kept wishing and wishing I had the Sol Azteca ones. Sure, the Sol Azteca tacos cost $16 instead of the $8 I paid at Border (I here allude to my earlier statement about price) - but that was the best $16 I have eaten in a LONG, LONG time. If you want cheap Mexican, you get cheap food - cheap quality, cheap flavor, cheap price. Sol Azteca isn't cheap - but the food is worth every penny. read more

I've been here 4 or 5 times since it's relatively close to where I live. The food is average you-can-get-it-anywhere Mexican, not awful but also nothing unique or great about it. My son and I went last Sunday and were seated right away. Food was slow to come out even though there were only 5 or 6 other tables seated. The server was decent. I had enchiladas rojo and verde (one of each) which came with refried beans and flavorless rice. The enchiladas were decent but not worth $17 for only two small ones. My son got the kids chicken burrito which was full sized and he enjoyed. A note about drinks: don't expect to be impressed in any way. Over the course of visits I've tried margaritas, sangria, soda, and an Arnold Palmer. Margaritas are premade in large batches and set aside until someone orders them; there's nothing fresh about them. Sangria was gross, don't order it. Soda... no refills. Seriously, how does any place not have free refills on fountain soda?! It's not like you're buying a can or a bottle of Jarritos, which would make sense to pay per drink. The Arnold Palmer was the best thing I've had there, followed by plain water. Summary: go somewhere else. Prices are too high for the quantity and quality. Drinks are sub-par in every way. The only positive is sitting on the patio, but even then they have giant umbrellas blocking anything resembling a blue sky. read more

Came here on a Friday night, though relatively early, and the two of us were seated right away. I ordered a margarita, the boy got sangria -- I chose wisely. The sangria was kind of watery? And had a strong brandy scent that reminded me of sugar cookies, which is just weird for sangria. But the margarita (salt, on the rocks) was solid, so I'm assuming they use a tequila that's less nasty than Cuervo. Our drinks came promptly and we ordered enchiladas and stuffed poblano peppers. The food was ready in a mere heartbeat! And it was really quite tasty. The menu was a little bit sparse for choices, and most of the interesting things were kind of spendy (around $20 for the special entrees). The more traditional Mexican options were kind of overpriced for what they were. Like, I can make my own enchiladas for less than $15, thanks. Service was attentive but laid back. They brought my boyfriend some habanero sauce when we asked if they offered a spicy salsa (house salsa is delicious, but hardly spicy at all). That stuff will mess you up. So I'd say the food is 3 stars (specials might be better, but I'm a cheap bastard) but the quick service and tasty margarita were high quality. read more

I have no idea why some of the reviews of this place are so bad. I just moved to Boston from Texas, and I will admit that this is not perfect Tex Mex. However, it is more than serviceable, even if you have the world's highest standards, like me. Pluses: Enchiladas. We tried the verdes, rojas, and poblano (which have a mole sauce). All VERY good. Chips and salsa: Free if you're ordering an entree! And bottomless. Service: Everyone was SO nice. Atmosphere: It felt like Houston. It was good to be home. Some other things that aren't so great? Well, the margarita was a little weak and the rice was really bland. But this is absolutely worth checking out. I will go back and try some of the more straight-Mex rather than Tex-Mex menu items, and perhaps report back on those, but for now, come here! My sister and I have a holiday tradition of Mexican dining. We usually go to Acapulco's, but since Cafe Sol Azteca got the best reviews in the area, we decided to break from the usual and try something new. I LOVE Mexican food, and never thought I could be disappointed by it, but Cafe Sol Azteca managed to accomplish that feat. I ordered the chilaquiles, which I have had many times, and they were very bland. I thought chilaquiles were supposed to have tortilla chips, salsa and cheese, but mine was just a pile of shredded chicken with (I think it was) cheese on top. I had to drown it in sour cream and the too sweet table salsa in order to eat it. My sister liked her fajitas, but for the price, the food is just not up to par. I know Boston is definitely not the mecca for Mexican food, but I will be back to Acapulco's next year. read more

Soz Azteca is my go to place when I'm craving cheese and refried beans. The food is delicious! This particular location has a great patio area that is perfect for some al fresco dining on a lovely night. My only complaint is the service. I never seem to get a server that is friendly and patient. There have been times when he walked away from the table before the whole party ordered. They tend to bump into chairs and people's arms quite often. Its impossible to even ask a question about the menu or make a special request. Fortunately the food, drink and atmosphere make up for the crappy service. read more

I went here on a Monday night for their open mic. It was tricky to find partly due to terrible directions from Google Maps, and the other part due to the fact that this place is a little hole in the wall place, however, it was great! The food was delicious and the atmosphere was nice. I got the Tostadas and would probably get that again. The food was authentic and fresh...but consider yourself warned, it is a little pricey. Bonus Tip: At the time if you checked in on Yelp you got a $10 off coupon, so be sure to check in! Go down a dimly lit staircase in the middle of an alley for dinner? Uh, sure, let me just grab my mace and make sure someone large with lots of muscles walks in front of me and I'm good to go. Besides the initial/potential sketchyness in the beginning of the night, everything else was amazing. Quick seating for 6 on a Saturday which was amazing, great outdoor atmosphere, friendly staff who don't laugh at you when you most likely butcher the name of the meal you're gonna get, and the drinks? Holy tequila. The free chips (with great salsa) might have been the only thing keeping me from stumbling my way out of there. Portions were sizable, and I managed to chow down on everything (besides the sides of beans which looked more like black paste to me and the purple cabbage which I haven't touched since an unfortunate St. Patty's day incident when I was young) and was completely satisfied and stuffed at the end. All in all, if you can actually find this place (we managed to on complete accident in a "I'm new in town and I'm gonna wander around til I find a place to eat" way) it's a great way to spend an evening in Newton Corner. read more
