Located near St. Paul's Cathedral, this place seemed out of place with its clear French atmosphere. However, it was just the perfect place we were looking for after walking all over London. My son and I were on a trip to London and looking for a nice place to eat and opted for Cafe Rouge. It seemed very busy walking in and I overheard someone ask the waiter for the check...never a good sign in America. The restaurant was very pretty and the ambiance felt like it would be a nice spot to grab a pre-dinner drink, or even dinner. It was directly across the street from St. Paul's Cathedral, which was perfectly convenient for grabbing breakfast before our tour. I had the english breakfast and my partner had the vegetarian breakfast; the total was under £20. The food was good and reasonably priced. We arrived after 9 AM and there was only one server working, but the restaurant was pretty empty. Our orders were taken quickly and food came out within 10-15 minutes. Once we started eating the crowd picked up, and someone who had previously been sitting on the phone (either a manager or owner) began to help out. The restaurant was maybe 1/4 full, so not very loud, and we were seated near the bar, so we heard the manager/owner yelling at the only server to make cappuccinos and other coffees quicker as she "didn't have all day." It is across the street and a welcome place to get caffeinated with some delicious coffee drinks. :) Our server was attentive and was backed up by another because they were pretty busy. The afternoon tea was terrible. The photos promised scones and pastries and sandwiches. However, we got two plates of crappy pastries that were evidently from a grocery store pack. They were stale, bland, and not worth even attempting to consume. Additionally, not a scone in sight. On top of that, we were charged £40 for this lame excuse of an "afternoon tea." Dreadful excuse for a restaurant. Overworked and underpaid staff without any training. I don't know how you ruin French onion soup but they managed to that well. For some reason they cannot make a martini and a barley passable croquet madame. It seems like the head Chef is a microwave. If Gordon Ramsay ever came here, he would burn the place down On the positive side the fries were ok and great location. Our experience was awful I ordered a cheese burger - I got an incomplete burger without the buns and then after I got another incomplete burger with the buns and no patty- so, I decided to cancel that order because it was too much. Where to start? It's a Saturday night 6pm. Prime time near St Paul London. The restaurant is not packed so walking in after reading the menu outside I was feeling the menu was pretty good and they have a nice looking bar.. why not. Upon entering I waited 5 minutes until the staff even cared to come over and sit me. I saw from the eyes of the other patrons I made a bad decision. But I wasn't raised a quitter. I take my seat and wait for the staff to take my drink order... 10 minutes as they wander around confused. I raise my hand like a child in school to get someone's attention. The bartender/ waitress is the only staff member willing to work this evening. I order a glass of the red.. they are out.. okay let's try that again I ask them what red wine on the list do they have.. only one red and their cheapest of course. Hey I'm on a business trip I'm willing to shell a few dollars for the good stuff but sadly for a French restaurant they must of drank all the good wine in the afternoon. I order the French soup like the gentlemen I am and served with a bowl of brown onion water with no cheese. Wow I feel like I should of waited another 45 minutes for bread and butter. Next comes the main dish, beef stew which I've had at other French restaurants and now getting excited as I drank the rest of my soup. The presentation is nice, the taste was superb. As I'm chowing down the 3 pieces of beef in my sauce literally I am watching nearly 20 people enter sit and then leave after 15 minutes of being ignored. Must be a French thing... if any French people actually worked here of course. As I finish my main course the couple next to me grabs my attention and ask me why did I stay? So politely I ask them the same. We laugh together, we then realized we were both dumb enough to stay after the starter. Silence creeps in and we stare back at our bland dishes. I would say it was awkward but I've honestly lived through worst. I have kids. I now have been flagging down the bartender / waitress for my check for another 10 minutes alongside my comrades in arms. I've given up and started to write a review in the hopes anyone in the kitchen has yelp and can help us! After being seated for at least 10-15 minutes, no one bothered to serve us drinking water or take our order. It was around 3:30 pm and the place was not busy, practically empty inside the restaurant. Several servers walked by us as if we were not there. We eventually got the attention of one server, who stated that she would be with us shortly, but never did. Even as we were gathering our things to leave, no one came by to explain or apologize. It appears that they intentionally ignored us to send a message that we were not welcome at their establishment (due to our race perhaps). We got amazing food and great services at Cote, which is just a few steps away. I remembered going to Cafe Rouge in Hampstead and in Greenwich and finding it quite all right. Although this branch right next to St. Paul's obviously has a great view, I didn't find the atmosphere very comfortable. I only wanted something light so I ordered a salad. I was surprised by the neat, colourful presentation but not really convinced by the flavour. After climbing to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral, my legs were twitching and we needed somewhere to take in some nutrients, fast. We asked a couple locals where we could eat around there, and they said that Cafe Rouge was a chain but a decent one. My mother and I split an order of salmon cakes and an order of crab salad. The salmon cakes were okay, a little bit dry and very uninteresting. The crab salad was better, served with a tasty dressing and crunchy crostinis. Both entrees, however, came on beds of old browning lettuce, with the browned pieces tucked underneath as if we wouldn't notice. The service was snail slow, perhaps in homage to a perception of the French as a lazy and languorous people who also happen to eat snails. The restaurant was grossly understaffed - the space is pretty big, but the only waiter I saw was our own. At the very least, this waiter seemed nice, if a bit awkward and shy and evasive of eye contact whenever we wanted service. read more

Not a place where I would return. It might be an established pearl of the Cafe Rouge chain, but didn't leave a very good impression. The decor -delightful, but not unique; cheerful, but spoilt by the tensed faces of international waiters and waitresses. Were they watched or what?! There is the restaurant part of the place and the bar side of it. Though the restaurant tables were empty, me and my friends couldn't be seated (we only wanted some drinks) and had to wait long minutes until some other, generous customers finished their drinks and let us sit down at their table. I have to say, Cafe Rouge is one of the better chain restaurants in London. If you're looking for a no-fuss, no-frills French meal, head in their direction. I recently accompanied my visiting grandmother to this location for lunch. What a wonderful place to people-watch (as long as you get a seat by the window). Directly across the street from St Paul's Cathedral, you have stunning views of the cathedral. And you can simultaneously laugh at all of the crazy tourist groups. Our meal was delivered QUICK QUICK QUICK and pretty decent. I have the chicken and roquefort salad (hold the roquefort, of course) while the g-ma enjoyed a cured meats platter (salami and prosciutto with pate, bread, and gherkins). It's a long story how we ended up by St Paul's at 10:00 PM so I won't go into it but it worked out well. We were looking for a late night bite when most places were closed and we came across Cafe Rouge. We were greeted by the manager and seated in a cozy corner with a perfect view of St Paul's Cathedral, lit up by spotlights just across the block. I always love a damn good steak frites and upon the server's recommendation, we both ordered the Bavette steak, cooked rare as suggested. The steak had a nice flavor although it was a tad tough. I would have preferred it to be a little more tender but still not bad. We moved on to desert for the Crepe Chocolat Banane. It was a gooey-chocalate frenzy of bananas and chocolate over crepes. It was paired nicely with a cafe latte. The service here was one of the best features. We were checked on frequently by both the server and manager who made sure our meal was pleasant. It was near closing time but we didn't feel like we were being rushed by any means. Overall, Cafe Rouge was a nice finish to our evening on a night when our plans had been abruptly changed. I feel sad to give this review. I had an earlier positive experience that brought me a bag on a rainy Saturday night In London. I was craving a burger and when presented with the menu, chose the beef burger. What was delivered to me was an overdone soupçon of beef. I immediately indicated that it would not be acceptable and could they recook the order. The very nice waitress indicated that is the way it comes and would not improve because the burger is not French cooking, and they don't want to cut other menu options with 'burger and fries'.
