I was looking for a quick bite to eat and there were several options in the area, but I decided to try Cafe Rothem. Upon arriving, I stepped into a most laid-back and relaxing environment. Jazz music played softly in the background, the clean tables were nicely spaced out throughout the space, there was a stage set up for live entertainment, and the nicest staff member you could ever meet. At the time, I wasn't interested in dessert, though they had plenty of options available. I decided to order a Tuna Salad Sandwich and it hit the spot. Sometimes the simplest things are the easiest to mess up, but overall, the taste was pretty satisfying. The lettuce, tomatoes, and red onion were fresh, and the tuna wasn't dry- it had a good amount of mayo added to it. Next time, I'll have to try some of their other food and drink options, but for now, I can say that I was pleased with my order and visit. This cafe is inside a unique bookstore with an interesting collection of old pottery, machines art and Korean books, cds etc An entertainment stage with a grand piano, guitar and microphones. I was lucky to snag a Cafe Rothem bakery surprise bag for the first time, and the price was actually a bit lower than most other bakery bags. It was also my first time stepping into the café--turns out it's the kind of place where you can read books and listen to music, with a cozy, intellectual atmosphere. As for the bag itself, I really liked everything inside: a garlic cream bread (I personally love that savory, crispy flavor), a potato bread, and finally a jam-filled bun. First of all I would be remiss by not thanking Deonne D, my collaborator and aesthetician who gave me a phenomenal chocolate facial (story for another day!) for suggesting one of her favorite spots for our meeting yesterday. Cafe Rothem is not a neighborhood gem as I often say for some of my faves, it is a diamond!!! Nestled in a shopping plaza in Duluth, the outside does not do justice for the interior. I will say that I love the ample parking available, but from the moment I entered and was greeted right away to taking in all the aesthetics including a wall of albums with books on top row, artwork throughout, meeting room space, a grand piano, and ample seating space around large tables had me blown away. The coffee and tea selections gave me enough options to want to come back and try more. There were also pastries I had never heard of before and sandwiches available to accompany. I selected the caramel macchiato and pumpkin bread, as many that follow me know that I love all things pumpkin! My companion had the ginger tea and one of the many ramen noodle bowl flavors available. I was thoroughly pleased with the pumpkin bread which was heated perfectly and had cream cheese and pumpkin seeds. The coffee was delightful and not too sweet as requested. I did add a little honey to suit my sweetness preference. The noodles were enough to share, but opted not to due to the high sodium content I read on the label. I do love to eat, but wellness is very important to me and I try to be as balanced as possible. My companion did enjoy her selections, and I loved the tray it was served on. As we discussed business topics, after a mini photo shoot, what seemed like a tour bus unloaded into the café. Majority of the individuals from the "tour" were of Asian decent a varying ages. We observed the interactions and same genuineness from owners I felt when I arrived. My companion actually had a frequent shopper card that was punched with the purchases, and shared how much she enjoyed coming to this establishment. Fairly sized cafe, housing Sunday church gatherings and rentable meeting rooms. I tried both the coffee and a pastry and I'd rate them as mediocre; which, to clarify, isn't a bad rating but also not an outstanding one either. Things you should know: I. PARKING Cafe Rothem is within the Howell Center Plaza and shares a public parking lot with the adjacent surrounding businesses. Parking is easy and free. It fills up mid-day ~ so you'll have to park a little further out and walk (which isn't too bad). II. SERVICE Very slow. I ordered a pre-made Pain au Chocolat and Americano and it took 20+ minutes for them to have it ready. The shop had various tables still available, so they weren't at capacity. I wouldn't expect quick service here, BUT they are very friendly. III. QUALITY The coffee was standard 그렇지만 the pastry was very dry. It wasn't that buttery and moist flakey texture you'd want a croissant to be ~ barely any chocolate filling. IV. CAPACITY Plenty of available seating for a weekend afternoon. Mix-matched furniture, a futon, and carpet lets you know this is for sure a small business. Beef bowl was delicious, lemonade was interesting. It was Monday at noon and only 4 other guests. Service was good, but the restaurant order pagers seem; 1. Unnecessary, and 2. Kill the vibe walking through the calm jazzy cafe with a very loud beeping device to retrieve your order. I only got a tea here, which I enjoyed. I can't comment on the food but they have some small bites, desserts, and sandwiches. They have a wide variety of teas as well as other drinks. The inside is a little dark IMO and outdated but it works. They have a wall full of books and another with vinyls. There is a stage on one side for their open mic nights, which I think is Monday. They also host a Sunday church service since the owners are Christians and their cafe doubles as a church. There are tables spread out for about 30 people and you get enough room to spread out esp for COVID reasons. The owner man was nice and his wife was working the kitchen. It's a great place to study but again, there are people talking and there is a low hum in the area so I would definitely use some music or noise canceling headphones. Prices are decent. What an awesome little cafe! Came on a Friday night to finish some work, relax and eat and it was the perfect place. The staff were so welcoming and the cafe has great seating with large tables and outlets all over the place. Love the bookshelf walls and small stage. I see that they even have special open mic nights, I'm excited to visit for one. You also can rent books from them, I've never seen that before but thought that was a great idea. They also had a small conference room available for rent. What don't they have!? I tried the cup of rice with chicken and it was fresh and tasty. A SUPER cool local neighborhood coffee/tea shop! It appears to be run by a husband-and-wife couple. We enjoyed our drinks and felt very comfortable with two children (3 yrs old and 7 mo. old). The hospitality was genuine and warm. The husband(?) walked over with a scoop of sherbet for my granddaughter...just because! The Watteok waffle is soo good! It has maple syrup-like filling inside and it's chewy on the outside. They serve it warm! I also got the siphone coffee. I've never seen it at a coffee shop before. It's a really cool coffee filter and serves 3-4 cups..but my mother in law and I drank the whole thing by ourselves. I recommend the hazelnut. I absolutely love the atmosphere here. Nice jazz, dim lights, books and discs filling the room from floor to ceiling. I stayed here for hours. The seats are pretty comfy and tables are large. It's a good space to study or sit and chat with friends. Even at a busy hour, it wasn't that loud. I've had my eye on this cafe for a while now, and finally visited today. The cafe is located in a big shopping center and shares the big parking lot with other establishments. I ordered a hot white chocolate mocha with almond milk, a hot cappuccino with almond milk, and a couple of watteik (waffles). My total was around $14. The waffles were amazing! The coffee was okay. I felt like my white chocolate mocha lacked flavor, but maybe I'm just used to the overly sweet ones from big chain coffee shops. Their menu seems promising with a variety of hot and cold drinks, desserts, and small snacks. The cafe is very neat. Floor to ceiling shelves filled with books. Plenty of outlets for charging devices. Decent size stage with a few musical instruments. Chill ambiance and great service. Great place for quiet studying and/or laptop work. Although I was aware of the area, I had never heard of cafe Rothem. My friend introduced me to cafe Rothem and we decided to hang out here for our next meet. The location is located in a korean plaza next to Harue food and A.M sweet creations. Other cool places to have a bite before stepping into the chill and quiet atmosphere of cafe Rothem. The outside of the cafe is not very noticeable except of the sign. The interior of the cafe was not what i expected. The seating area was quite smaller than I imagined it to be and very open. It was very vintage and hip almost to the point it felt like we were downtown. The left side of the cafe where the windows were was a wall filled with books and on the opposite side were cramped to the brim with records! The cafe also has a cool plus to it, they host live music shows! I had never been to a cafe in Duluth that held such events. (Still have to come to a show here in cafe Rothem) After we entered the cafe, my friend and I picked a table and dropped our stuff off. We then took ourselves to the register to order a drink. There were 3 glasses displays, one showing cakes, and the other two showing a selection of pastries. Behind the register on the wall was the menu with teas, smoothies, and more foods/desserts to choose from. I chose the green plum tea iced and my friend ordered a strawberry samba smoothie. The nice gentleman that was taking our order helped my indecisive friend with what drink they should order. He was kind and patient with it being our first time here in cafe Rothem. After we finished ordering we then got vibrating pagers and went back to our seat. After a couple minutes of waiting our drinks were done. They were both poured into cute glasses that added delicious taste to our refreshments! My green plum tea surprisingly did not taste like tea at all, which intrigued my friend since they did not like the bitterness teas usually had. It was very sweet and had what seemed to be lemon bits at the bottom of the glass. My friend also fairly enjoyed the strawberry samba they ordered. Overall, the atmosphere of the cafe was quiet and definitely a change to the regular cafes throughout Duluth. Will for sure come again for one of the live shows and try one of the rice bowls and waffles that they serve! read more

It's located in the same plaza as Harue Cafe (the original Korean fried chicken spot that opened in Atlanta when I was a kid), Pho24, Just Cheesecake, & Oh My Samgyupsahl. The staff has always been very friendly. Made me feel right at home. They make really good green tea latte and they are known for their specialty Korean street food desserts. They even put a twist on a classic Korean favorite dessert which was very creative. My favorites are the waffle /wa-dduk and the ones that come in a cylinder casing. Love the tall bookshelves filled with records and books. There are plenty of tables available in the main cafe space. They even have a stage where performances take place on special nights. The atmosphere is relaxing with jazz music playing in the background and a number of tables spread out with comfortable chairs. Cafe Rothem is located off Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. It's between Harue and and Just Cheesecake, a few shops down from Pho 24. There's plenty of parking, but only a few spots directly in front of the cafe. Based on the pictures on Yelp I had expected an almost "informal contemporary church" vibe (probably because of the stage and orange/purple color scheme). I was surprised to find these gorgeous floor to ceiling bookshelves, plenty of classy wooden tables (reminding me of my grandmothers sitting room), and a quaint little stage. There was jazz music playing and the temperature indoor really pleasant. I ordered a Green Tea Latte ($4.20) and a Beef Bulgogi Cup-Rice ($7.99). My food took a little while to be prepared, but it was steaming hot and freshly made. The Cup-Rice was made up of rice, glass noodles, lettuce, beef bulgogi, sauce, and sesame seeds. It was a huge portion size, but super addictive. My Green Tea Latte stayed hot almost my entire visit. It was maybe a little more expensive than I would have liked, but I'll pay almost anything for a good latte. The atmosphere was not conductive for my personal productiveness, it was definitely too comfortable. I need something a little more "sterile" to get things done.
