OMG! What a great place. We were looking for a Polish restaurant and this place showed up. Never tried Czech food but sure glad we tried this place. Appetizers were the potato pancakes and fried cheese/ French fries. Dinner was pork steak, roast beef, duck, and salmon and each entree was great. Finally, summer in Chicago has arrived. Rosa J., Daddy J., and Mama J. were checking out the Montclare neighborhood on the western boarder of the city. I "yelped" Cafe Prague ahead of time. Cafe Prague is located near the Belmont and Rutherford. What an Oasis! The lady servers there were absolutely gorgeous! When I asked for recommendations, one of the beautiful young ladies quickly explained some of the Czech staples. In the ends, Mama J. went with the traditional halusky (a noodle-based dish with bacons and sour cream); Daddy J. picked beef goulash; I chose the grilled filet mignon. The beef goulash also came with a choice of bread dumplings. While I wasn't crazy about the taste of bread dumplings (semi-bland and doughy), the beef goulash was tender and filling. If you typically like any western-style comfort food, beef goulash would potentially be a great belly-warmer when the harsh Chi-town winter season comes around. Although the traditional halusky was listed as an "appetizer" on the menu, whoever with a small appetite should be fine with this dish alone. The combination of the potato noddles, fried bacons, and sour cream were quite delicious. However, I know many of you aren't the fan of sour cream in any shape or form. You might want to skip this one if you dislike anything with an acidic flavor. On the other hand, my grilled filet mignon was cooked appropriately according to what I requested (medium). It was juicy, with a plenty of sauce to keep the meat moist. With one (1) starter and two (2) entrees, our total came to $41.90. I thought the price was fair for the neighborhood standard. Cafe Prague also has a small, yet well-decorated patio facing Belmont Ave. They also have a separate area for bar patrons. We saw a Czech-style birthday party going on at the adjacent table. As an immigrant myself, it's always delightful to find a place to celebrate and make myself at home in a foreign country. Wasn't the friendliest staff but it was a unique restaurant and I have never seen anything like it. Eastern European influence brings such inspirational dishes. I was on to there for a snack so I got a $3 pilsner (which was a daily special) and their signature Prague wings (I got half off as the daily special as well) they were delicious. This is fancy food at a level you know you couldn't make as good as Cafe Prague makes their dishes. The different varieties of temping plates allow you to feel as if anything you order is a treat for yourself. The starters and entrees are made to share with your date or a big group. We actually stumbled upon Cafe Prague because were looking to go to a different restaurant when we realized that restaurant was closed. Thankfully, we pulled out our handy dandy yelp app and found Cafe Prague to be close by. We thought why not? The restaurant is a bar/restaurant with a large dancing floor space. The lights were dimly lit and I thought the place was going to turn into a club. It didnt. There were a lot of patrons here hanging out so it looked like a local hang out spot. People really like it here! We looked at their menu and it had a lot of good looking dishes. We ordered: Homemade potato pancake--savory herbs and hand grated potatoes pan-fried and topped with garlic, sour cream and chives. We opted to also add smoked salmon. The dish was super good! Slow roasted crispy skin pork shank--I did not try this dish but my friend said the skin was not crispy. She said the skin was more roasted and chewy which made the dish really rich. The meat was fall off the bone tender though and she enjoyed the dish. Grilled trout--I did not try this dish but my friend enjoyed it. Moravian pork--The pork was served with garlic and onion with a side of homemade sauerkraut and homemade dumpling. The pork in this dish was flavorful and tender and the homemade sauerkraut was SO GOOD. I was not really a fan of the homemade dumpling though. Czech fried cheese--Its made with brie or muenster cheese and served with french fries and a side of tartar sauce. I did not really like the cheese but I enjoyed the french fries and tartar sauce. For dessert, I ordered the crepe dessert without the crepe, which was basically two scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with blueberry cream and freshly whipped cream with a drizzle of chocolate syrup. It was DELICIOUS! My friends tried the apple strudel and the ice cream with raspberry syrup. They also enjoyed their desserts. Our dinner from start to finish was great. I really enjoy this place, especially since the reconfigured the bar area. Before it was tucked in the corner so if you were sitting at the tables or couches, the bartender couldn't see you. We had them cater for an office lunch and I have to say I will abslutly be coming back. This has been one of my favorite sites to get authentic Czech food that reminds me so much of the time I spent there. So when it came time to order something different for lunch for the office. I knew exactly where to go! I was expecting to hear a few complainers since you can never please everyone. But for the most part everyone loved the Czech food and was excited to be able to try some dishes from an area of the world that they normally don't get to eat from. The Sopsky salad was a favorite of the office with my favorite Svickova and the Bread Dumplings came in a close second. When you hike out this far out to the west side, chances are you will get past the K, L, M, O, and maybe even P streets. Out by Cafe Prague you'll run into the mad Polish hood where if you don't speak English, you might feel just a little bit out of pace! After a Chicago Fire game, my friend suggested we head to Cafe Prague for his brother's birthday party. It was a great event hall, there was a DJ table set up, balloons, lights of all colors flashing and disco ball overhead. It was class and people were dressed nicely celebrating. Not speaking Polish, I quickly spurted Okocim when asked for what I wanted. Okocim it was and Okocim was magical. There was tons of foods and great desserts lying around everywhere but after spending the entire evening at the Fire game and Johnnie's Beef, more food was just not possible. We were seating at a long table with over 20 people there and people shuffle around the table and around the food at the table nearby. My husband and I were hoping to relive some fond memories of travel through Eastern Europe and we were not disappointed. The goulash and dumplings were delicious as was the schnitzel. We were curious to try Czech food and we were delighted to find this charming restaurant. There were six of us and we tried and shared everything. The potato pancakes were light and crisp. The Topinky appetizer was a surprising combination of flavors on rye bread and just delicious. We tried braised beef, the roasted beef, the pork schnitzel, and the goulash but our favorite was the beef cheeks. Our server was outstanding, so friendly and efficient. She could give us a detailed description of everything on the menu. And the house made strudel was a must. The restaurant also gave us a complimentary shot of a herbal digestif after dinner.
