The food here is absolutely phenomenal and even the presentation is fancy. The interior is unlike typical dim sum restaurants in HK - it's very classy and elegant. The best part? They have English menus! I honestly think all the dishes I've tried here are great so it's hard to go wrong with anything on the menu! Although the food can take a while to be served, the service is really excellent. They're nice even when I come here to get take out after work. It's location is unbelievably convenient - inside a shopping mall and near the MTR.

I had to ask to get a vegetarian version of the soup and was pleasantly surprised that they didn't refuse. My colleagues liked their soup and noodle dishes with pork a lot. Noodles to me were undercooked a tiny bit but the lemongrass pork flavor was good. They had a pitcher of fish sauce which was very convenient for me to pour over the noodles. I should try more items like the pho, banh mi sandwiches or spring rolls. Service was not bad, when it got more crowded our server gave us the "You are finished and need to leave" eyeball so we left after less than an hour :)

They have made a smart business decision in setting up shop in that Central-meets-Sheung-Wan part of town and offer the kind of Northern Vietnamese fare that just about anyone can enjoy. In some strange way, Bún Cha reminds me of places in Vietnam. It is incredibly small and located on a steep hill just across from PMQ. How they've managed to squeeze in some tables in here is beyond me, but know the seating is extremely tight. Even with a table or two on the outside, they experience lines / queues during peak service hours all the time. Unlike a lot of their nearby eatery neighbors, they stay open during that weird 3pm-6pm time frame, which is when I like to eat here. Crowds be gone. Similarly to Vietnam, the Viet speaking staff works behind an open kitchen / counter in clockwork type fashion. Everyone has a role and they do it well. Thank the stars for the massive air conditioning units from above; back in the motherland the wall fans aren't enough to keep sweating from dripping into the food. Thank goodness they stack a ton of napkins for everyone to use. Onto the food: My pho bo (really "pho tai") was wonderfully garnished with the basil, scallions, and onions with a small side of lime and chilis for additional zest and bang. I love that they include hoisin at the table (tuong den) because frankly, the broth needed it. It's definitely not MSG-laden but may be less potent in the eyes of other fellow pho lovers. In that sense, it was mildly disappointing, but certainly not a deal breaker. And for what it's worth -- it's a big ol bowl. No one mentioned anything about xe lua! I've also sampled their version of bun thit nuong, i.e. vermicelli with grilled pork and it was refreshing. The pickled veggies were fresh and I appreciated the generous dousing of fried garlic, peanuts, shallots across the dish. Unlike some versions in the US / Australia where there is a massive heap of salad beneath, this one did not have that. Plenty of bún; just the way I like it. Add to that a jar with a handle full of nuoc mam, which I've not seen in any Viet restaurant in HK. Kudos on that. The real star of the show was the cha gio, or Vietnamese spring rolls. They're more akin to the nem cua of northern Vietnam -- spring rolls stuffed with minced pork, crab, glass noodles, and fungus. They were light, crispy, and even airy; just like the stuff back in the motherland. Even the accompanying lettuce was stiff with freshness, which made the meal all the more pleasant. It all comes at a price. At around $70HKD for the average noodle dish, it's hardly highway robbery but it's certainly along the same price point as most places in Central. They make a killing on the drinks, charging as much as $40HKD for stuff like Hanoi Beer, which is an easy $4HKD in Hanoi itself. Rent does need to get paid after all and with *good* Viet food in demand, they've certainly got one of the better options in town.

OMGGGGGGGGG I could eat this whole thing without sharing!!!!!! Fried mussels are spicy!! But they're fresh and big mussels, with really tasty sauce. Careful not to eat the peppers! The dish looks small but I come with 4-5 people and everyone gets at least one. There's enough that some of us (like me!) get 2-3!! Such sharing companions! I don't know how I decided to eat here for the first time (whether it was a recommendation from a policy coworker that would serve as a gleaming recommendation, or noticing a Vietnamese restaurant named after a famous beach town), but I enjoy trying Viet food in non-Viet areas whenever I can (think outside of Vietnam or Vietnamese community centers). Of all the Vietnamese restaurants in Hong Kong I have tried so far, the food at this restaurant tastes closest to what I remember eating as a child, which is Vietnamese food made by Vietnamese people for Vietnamese people. Mind you, I was based in New Territories, so it's not as internationally oriented as Hong Kong Island is, so options are limited. If you're in New Territories and want to taste more traditional Vietnamese food, this place holds promise. I've tried their com tam, bánh cuon, bún bò Hue, bánh xèo, and bún riêu. These are all safe things for me to order, as they're all dishes that I've grown up eating. The fish sauce of course is the key element of flavoring to many of these dishes (the non soup noodle dishes), so don't forget to add the fish sauce!

If you're visiting from the United States or Canada, you'll instantly notice that there's many more dishes than the Pho, Bun, and Banh Mi -- which are really the only widely available dishes you'll find in North America. There's still a definite influence from French cooking on the other available dishes, but I would recommend venturing out of your comfort zone and definitely trying something spicy or some grilled meats. For something a little different but familiar, I would give the rice paper salad rolls and vermicelli cake a try. Overall, a nice place to visit for fresh, light Vietnamese food.
