Reservations are highly suggested since this restaurant is in the financial district and is often packed for lunch. To start, the green tea is complimentary and they consistently refill your cup. For food, we started with a salmon sashimi, avocado and softshell crab roll and uni roll to share. The salmon sashimi was served on a bed of ice, which was a nice touch to the presentation. It was really fresh and fatty, almost melting in my mouth. The avocado and softshell crab roll was also delicious. It's crispy and flavorful and I like that there's more filling than rice. The uni roll was unexpectedly disappointing, however. It was not fresh at all and the portion was really small for its price. For our mains, I got an eel rice. I felt that this dish was well executed because the eel sauce tasted delicious but it wasn't over powering. I can definitely still taste the eel, which was fresh, flavorful and succulent. We also got two lunch sets, the assorted tempura set and the beef udon set. These individually come with different items as part of the set lunch, such as miso soup, and/or sashimi and California roll. Overall, a solid place for quality Japanese food. Other than the uni roll, there are no complaints! The service and quality has been pretty consistent over the years, so I'll be coming back whenever I visit Hong Kong!

One the most delicious ones is the grilled glutinous rice with chicken inside. My personal favorite is the tofu pudding (豆腐花). It's difficult to find such smooth tofu pudding that rivals tofu pudding from street shops tended by generations of tofu masters. It was so good that we actually ate 3 meals there in one day. They also have delicious dinner dishes, especially the paper covered pork and the three bean pudding for dessert.

Food came hot and portions were decently sized. Most dishes started at around 40 HKD ~ 6 CAD, which is a bit expensive when compared to dim sum spots in Canada. Nonetheless, it seems to be a good place if you have a large group and are looking for a break between shopping in the Tai Koo Shing area. As chance would have it, a friend and I decided to meet up for lunch and we picked Cafeholic due to the proximity to our offices. When we arrived, there was already several parties waiting in line ahead of us. We received a number from the front desk and waited about 10 minutes before we were called for a table. The table setting is simple, with utensils in a small basket on the side and a stack of napkins (YES A RARITY IN HONG KONG), salt and pepper, and a tall bottle of mint water with water glasses. I love this as it eliminates the need to ask for refills of water in a busy restaurant (something I wish Tsui Wah would do too as flagging their servers is such a chore). After we made our lunch selections from their lunch set menu, two bowls of soup appeared in one minute. Ta da! I think it was cream of carrot. Hearty and filling, good for a cold winter day. Within 15 minutes, our mains were served - Deep fried chicken with Japanese curry and Omurice and a side salad. Wow. Presentation was good and portion size quite generous. The dressing for the side salad was good too! Not just your plain balsamic vinaigrette. I wanted more! This all for HK$79, with coffee/milk tea/lemon tea. My wallet and tummy are happy! The dishes were small shareable plates so we just shared everything. Here are some of the standout dishes at our table that pleased everyone: Fried Tofu: They said that the tofu came straight from Japan and was put straight into the fryer. So the nice crispy shell is the tofu itself. It was indeed tasty without any additives. Pork Belly: Simple and grilled to perfection with a slight sear. Flavors of most fatty meat come out nicely and this one was no exception. Fried rice with soft boiled egg: What an interesting take on fried rice... with a Japanese styled soft boiled egg. IMO, you can add that soft boiled egg to almost anything and it would make it better. This was a perfect combo (and also a perfect compliment to the stiff drinks they were serving). Japanese gin: we all know Japanese whiskey is top notch. I had never tried a Japanese gin until this night. Just had it with a touch of tonic and it was really smooth. Give it a shot (pun intended). We tried a bunch of other dishes and all were pretty much spectacular. We liked the vibe and the attentiveness and courtesy of the staff. The entire restaurant was also treated to show where they flame up a fish in a traditional Japanese way (I'm guessing... don't quote me on that). Then they serve the fish to each of the tables.
