On my first night in The Netherlands, my friends brought me to this place on a mild Thursday night after we had dinner at a nearby burger joint. The place was crowded as hell as it looked as if there weren't an open seat in the house. This was more of a night cap situation and we just wanted to have one (maybe two more) beer lol. We walked around to see if there was an available seat for 3 in the place and in the main area there was nothing. We stumbled upon a little area away from the huge main room. There were a couple of girls saying they were expecting some friends to join and we told them we would not be long. They said sure, go for it. We grabbed those seats with the quickness as others were looking around for places to snag. We instantly ordered and by luck of just skimming through the menu, I drank the best beer that I've had in 2018 thus far. I got the Deugniet which is a Abbey Tripel beer by Brasserie Du Bocq, a brewery in Purnode-Yvoir...simply delicious is what this beer was. I decided to have 2 of them. We were having a good time and our server was very cool. He laughed at me for awhile because he saw my excitement over the awesome beer I was drinking. The gals that let us take the seats friends' started rolling in so we wanted to be respectful and give up the seats and headed on home. I would love to come back here the next time in the area. The food and drinks were also amazing, I had the Coffee Complete which is amazing, you get liquer, coffee, chocolates and a cookie, completely fantastic! What can I say about this place.... It is located next to the exit of Hoog Catherijne. When you walk past it, you do see that it is a bar, but the outside only makes you think it is a regular bar. However, when you get inside, you find out the place actually used to be a church. They left most of the details in place and it just looks stunning. The staff was super helpful to us: one waitress saw that we were looking for a place to sit, but we couldn't see one available. She quickly looked in the computer system and told us that there should be a place available on the first floor, next to the organ. Really happy she did point us to this free table, as the atmosphere here is just great!!! This place has a lot of beers... Going through the menu that was on the table, the majority of the pages were about different beers, each with a separate and very clear description. Unfortunately for me, I was the designated driver for the day, so no beers for me. It's brewed by them and its worth it. Otherwise, they have a large selection of tap and bottle beers available. We started off by sharing the salad with goat cheese. It was so fresh! The honey with the goat cheese was so delicious that I wanted to lick off all the remnants from the plate! We also tried the Ham on the bone, Salmon Steak, Grandpa's stew and Roasted Chicken. Everything was savory and the portion was just right. After picking at my friend's plates, I would have to go with the Ham on the bone as my favorite. It was moist and tender. Service was okay for Europe. Coming from America, I'm used to speediness of wait staff. Here, they let you enjoy your meal and when you're ready, you should ask to pay rather than expecting them to bring the check to you. read more

Good food, great selection of Belgian beers and it's all set within an old church. There is even a few local Utrecht beers and surprisingly an IPA amongst them which was very good. The decor is quite funny actually, since there are the religious statues along with old bikes and musical instruments. To me the entrance seemed to be a little "secretive". From the outside it just looks like an average cafe but once inside it opens up to a large area. Find the secret entrance and head in for a drink and/or snack, you won't be disappointed. read more

Before becoming Café Olivier, this place used to be a christian church which makes the pub a very special place. It was super crowded when I went there on a Saturday afternoon and only a few tables were available. The pub has a tremendous variety of beer and the stuff seems to know them all. At least they are very happy to recommend and help you pick your favourite beer. But unfortunately the stuff knows about the great atmosphere and that people come by no matter how expensive the beer is. Thus I found them a bit arrogant and snobby. The location is gorgeous. You can't see this from the front, but is actually an old church and the large organ is still in place. It was quite busy when we arrived, and we took the last table. It would've been nice if they had directed us to a table. I had to remove the (highly insulted) house cat from my chair. I am in between three and four stars here. They don't have a huge selection of food but it's good quality and the price is average. Their service could've been more attentive. We barely saw our server. I love the interior here! The building used to be a church so with the massive windows you get loads of light in the café which is good, because all the furniture is super dark wood. I like to come to Olivier for lunch, I'm not much of a drinker. And though everything here can be quite pricey, you do get a proper amount of food and the food is good! I am addicted to salad with goat's cheese, so my favourite dish here is the salad with warm goat's cheese. And it's not even the only thing I can eat as a vegetarian! The bread that they use is delicious, especially the wholegrain-nut bread. The meat eaters that I've been here with were also very happy campers. Le boyfriend had a steak tartare sandwich this afternoon and was very pleased with the amount of tartare they serve. Also, the orange juice was fresh which is always a plus! This place is special. A Belgian restaurant in a former catholic church?! Oh yeah, getting drunk in front of the Holy Mary image might give you goose bumps. This is a must place to visit and even take a few pictures. The food is great specially the mussels, there are many interesting beers on the menu like Kwak and Delirium Tremens. There are small drinking tables, a big bar with counter and dining tables so it's good for any kind of occasion. The only "problem" is that this place is so popular that it's always full so getting a table without reservation requires some waiting and the waiters sometimes just can't handle the demand. I love this place. Any time I'm passing through Utrecht I make sure to make a stop even for just one beer. As an American I'm pretty impressed with any Dutch bar's selection of beer but they have a wonderful array both on tap and in bottles. If you can read Dutch they also explain all the beers and their AVB breakdown if you have trouble deciding. It really runs the gamut from lower AVB fruity/lambic beers to high-octane tripels and quads if you really want to get smashed. Perhaps the best thing about this place though is their decor and ambiance. Situated in a white-washed former church the interior is large and cavernous with some old ads still plastered on the walls and (I'm told) a still functioning organ. It's a surprisingly large space given the unassuming exterior. Honestly, I'm always so happy to come here. Their frites are pretty stellar too. read more

A church turned into a Belgian bar/restaurant. The fact that it is actually an old church is quite cool, and the conversion and decoration of the place is well done. It is quite noisy but the general atmosphere is warm and relaxed. Now if it was just for that, I'd note it 4/5 easily, but unfortunately two things will lower that note : first, the waiting time before getting a table : 1.5 hour.. Ok they told us it'd be a long time, but that was really long.. of course you can drink special Belgian beers at the bar while waiting, so that's still acceptable. Second, well the food is quite expensive for what it is ! It was good, for sure, but not exceptional amount or quality.. so that's deceiving. Nice place. Tucked away in the center of the city behind decieving facade, you will this atypical Dutch pub (its Belgian ;-)). You will be strucked by the contrasting inside of the building which used to be one of the shelter churches in the city. Typically for a Belgian pub you will find lots of different Belgian beers to choose from and a basic menu. Be warned that due to the accoustics of the pub there is a lot of 'noise' and the menu is no haute cuisine. Fingerfoods are good though. Good place to hangout (or start you evening) with a larger group of friends. Definately not advised for a first date or someone you want to have a more intimate private conversation. read more
