As I walked in, my heart started to race as I saw multiple desirable items in my view. "Lets not get to excited," I told myself. I've come to learn to lower my expectations in encounters with typically gluten filled food. Once the counter freed up, I quietly asked what was gluten free in the cabinet. She responded, "Everything". Breathe in, Breathe out. You, you, you and you I quickly picked out those golden oldies I hadn't managed to replicate or find anywhere else. I ordered a piece of Banana Cream Pie, Lemon Meringue Pie, Lemon Cheesecake and Berry Ricotta cake all gluten free. The Banana Cream Pie didn't make it home alive and the rest were devoured within 48 hours. Surprisingly, the texture of these goodies mimicked that of gluten-filled baked goods. Smothered upon a crumbly, buttery base was a blur of cream, lemon curd, meringue, banana and cheesecake. My body isn't too impressed with this binge but it isn't often that I encounter a gluten free bakery. From now on, if anyone owes me a favour - its a Banana Cream Pie from Tapeo, thank you. Beyond their selection, the best part of Tapeo Bakery is their contamination free kitchen. A real gluten free bakery, as opposed to a bakery selling gluten free goods amongst gluten-filled ones. Their bakery has their own kitchen specifically for their gluten free concoctions so the stress of gluten behind closed doors is not an issue. Tapeo Bakery is next door to Tapeo, allowing the business to make use of an ample amount of street front seating, rounding the corner in front of both shops. If you're sitting outside you can order from the Tapeo main menu, even if you're sitting outside the little bakery. The bakery itself is a humble affair. Counter service only; with two young guys working there. The bakery has decent looking loaves on sale (soy & linseed, sourdough, olive sourdough, fruit, etc), already packaged up in paper bags, sitting in rustic wooden boxes. The bread seems to be selling well. I's a great addition to the neighbourhood, considering the closest gooooood bakery is down on Botany Rd (Wild Cockatoo http://www.yelp.com.au/biz/wild-cockatoo-bakery-alexandria). The Nearby Quirks has alright bread too but they're not strictly a bakery. Tapeo Bakery is a nice little coffee spot in and of itself. It's not very big, and doesn't have a lot of seating inside, but if you're lucky enough to get a spot, you can order Toby's Estate coffee, have croissants, muffins & other baked goods, and they also do toasted sandwiches. Actually, that's one of the main reasons I gave this place a 4: the toasted sandwiches were damn impressive - very generous servings, fresh ingredients, and good bread. Think: large pieces of chicken, spicy tomato, lashings of olive tapenade, marinated eggplant. That sort of thing. This place is cosy, but not the kind of place you'd want to hang out in for hours. And if you want a big meal, you'll have to go to Tapeo itself for that, the bakery only does the small stuff.

Then there is Devereaux, a small corner café with a great older coffee machine and an open comfortable vibe. The coffee was solid and the banana bread was great. It's a perfect combination when you need a pick-me-up. We ordered two more coffees takeaway and drank them while we did our shopping around the Centre. It's a great choice for our caffeine fix and fits into our weekly shopping quite nicely with Woolworths, the news agency and the Discount Drug store all within 25 meters of the café.

The mixed berry smoothie wasn't sweet (which i was ok with it) but it had way more milk or yogurt in it than how I liked it. It's very milky rather than fruity taste. Overall, I'd say it's a 3.5 star experience for me.

I got their berry smoothie, which was made promptly and given to me in a mason jar, a classic hipster move. Their smoothie is a bit thicker than I expected, more creamy and less ice-filled, almost like a milkshake. I wanted tasty and cooling, which is what I got. The employee there kindly reminded me when it was 10 minutes before closing and asked if there was anything else he could get me before they closed. What kind manners! When I left, I was even chased down by him asking if I forgot a chapstick that was left on the table I was at.
