Café Josephine is definitely a place to go when you're ready to splurge a little. The food is rich, flavorful, and very good, but it is also quite expensive. It's not necessarily my favorite place to go simply because of the price, and at times I do feel that some things are a little overpriced for what you get. That being said, they know how to cook a steak. The ribeye cap is my favorite--it's around $78, which is certainly not cheap, but it is absolutely delicious and worth trying if you want to treat yourself. The oysters are always good, and the crab cakes are delicious as well, although I have occasionally had to watch out for small pieces of shell in the crab meat. Overall, Café Josephine is a really good restaurant with excellent food. If you're looking for a nicer meal, don't mind spending some money, and want a great steak and seafood experience, it's definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared for the price tag. The food here is really good, but unfortunately, the service was very disappointing. Our waitress never brought us refills or even silverware until we had to ask for them ourselves. We were a party of five adults and one baby, and despite the poor service, we were charged a $60 tip. I don't mind tipping when the service is good, but a $60 tip for the level of service we received felt very unreasonable. Our waitress barely checked on us and didn't provide the kind of service you would expect, especially for a party that large. Not a good first time experience.... All sides were good and hot! Appetizer was bland, Lamb chops not cooked to order, brought them back to the grill and still not cooked to order. We came here with reservations on a Friday night and were seated when we walked in. Everything we ordered was absolutely amazing and some of the best food we've ever had. We got the ribeye pork chop, the country fried steak, charbroiled oysters and a few extra sides. The pork chop was the table favorite, cooked perfectly and well seasoned literally melts in your mouth. But everything was delicious and would be ordered again. The biscuits that you get when you sit down were soft, warm and perfectly sweet. The charbroiled oysters were garlicky and butter and our server brought us some crab stuffed jalapeños which were also super good. They brought a piece of bread pudding out to help us celebrate a birthday too, which was really good and super sweet of the staff. All that said, our server Louis was extraordinary. We've never had a server take such good care of us, ever. We truly appreciated the kindness and attentiveness from him and Cafe Josephine. He even packed a few biscuits for our toddler that woke up from a nap as we were leaving. We couldn't be more thankful. The food was absolutely delicious and well worth the trip from Alexandria. Every dish was packed with authentic Cajun and Creole flavor, and you could tell great care went into the preparation. The char grilled oysters were rich and flavorful, and the tuna steak was cooked perfectly. The only downside was the wait. Service was friendly, but it took quite a while for our food to arrive, even though the restaurant wasn't overly busy during our 8:30 PM reservation. If the kitchen timing improved, this would easily be a five-star experience. Wife and I split a salad, she had a cup of shrimp and crab bisque, I had half the salad and the chicken fried steak. Along with the biscuits and two waters ( along with an upcharge for the hard brussel sprouts) and tip the bill was $60. A tad high for what we got. When we told her the biscuits were not cooked she went huh.....and still charged us. Also charged us for the substitution of the brussel sprouts. When I ask can I substitute she should say but there is a charge. Or maybe should I say can I change to brussel sprouts for the same price. Mentioned in my reservation it was our anniversary. Came here for the first time and overall the food and service was average. It's a nice restaurant for a small town however the prices were expensive compared to the quality of the food and service. We had the corn and crab bisque and filet. The corn and crab bisque was delicious and my favorite part of the meal. However, the steak was not worth the price in my opinion. I'd be open to trying other dishes on the menu rather than steak. I've been to many steak restaurants and this is simply not their specialty. The drinks were good! Great hidden gem! We started with the grilled oyster trio and they were all amazing. My husband doesn't love spinach but really liked the spinach and bacon ones. He got an Old Fashioned. Upgraded the whiskey and it was delicious, only it didn't come on a big rock. I had a French 75 which was also good but it was not chilled. For dinner he got the seafood pasta and loved it. The portion was crazy big. I had the eggplant and it was perfect. I didn't opt for the additional noodles and I'm glad I didn't because I had plenty. Biscuits were fresh out of the oven and were a treat. We finished our meal with bread pudding which we both agreed was fluffier than most places and it was also very tasty. The seafood rice was the best I've ever eaten. The seafood cake and stuffed shrimp kept me coming back for more bites after I was full. Charbroiled Oysters-top notch! The only complaint is, we got one little slice of bread to soak up all that delicious oyster liquor and it one little slice wasn't enough. The Cajun Mule was so delicious. It's the perfect summer cocktail. I could have drank these all night. My husband ordered the chicken fired steak. He commented that it was tender and well seasoned. It wasn't at all chewy for a thinker steak. He loves the twice baked potato and said he could have ordered one to go home. My wife and I are from South Carolina and are in town for work so I figured what better place for a date night. We first went on Feb 28th around 7pm everything was great I got an old fashion and we ordered an appetizer. It wasn't until after we started eating the appetizer that the server notified us that they were out of the Chicken fried ribeye and a good bit of other things. So we got the check ($37after tip) and figured we would try next weekend. Well we re visited yesterday around 7pm and it was the same exact situation. I asked before we ordered anything this time. I even called before making the reservation to make sure they would have it. I have a 17 month old son so the only time for a date night is on the weekend after he is asleep due to me working long hours during the week. I understand that this is a smaller restaurant and Saturday is the last day they are open for the week but this is just ridiculous. read more

Cafe Josephine I absolutely love this restaurant. They have the greatest steaks anywhere around (fight me on that) and the steaks are sorced from a local butcher shop and a local cattle raiser right here in Louisiana that is veteran supported and delicious too. You can support local on so many ways by eating here. This last time we went we had great service from Macy. She was attentive but not overly attentive and had just the right recommendations. They will customize any order within their means and make everything so perfect it is crazy. Chef and owner Troy does a fabulous job from preparation to plate that it wants you to forget all of the other places within 100 miles. The ribs are awesome, as are the fresh oysters whether grilled or raw. All.of the seafood is fresh and delicious. We have only made this a couples restaurant and left the kids at home each time and will continue to do so. Best left for adults. Do not go here if you are looking for a cheap meal. You won't find it. But you will find a fabulous meal excellently prepared that is worth more than the money you spend. read more

Called for a last minute reservation and got in at 5:45 on a Saturday. We were seated quickly and promptly greeted by our waitress, Amanda. Service was top notch all night. Amanda was friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We were seated next to a large party that she took care of as well. Their service did not overshadow ours, and we noticed her being as involved with them as with the 2 of us. She works W, FR, Sat and we recommend her. This was a celebration dinner and we celebrated. We also brought home lots of leftovers. The steak prices seem a bit high, but the quality and quantity of food is there. Sweet biscuits were brought to the table. These were good but do not fill up on carbs; the good stuff is coming. We started with chargrilled oysters and a sweet potato balls. The oysters were great per hubby (I can do without them), but the sweet potato balls stole the show. My husband had the tomahawk. A 40 oz. beast that was smoked then grilled. The Peruvian sweet peppers on top were a special treat. Two sides: twice baked potato and smothered green beans. The green beans were good but a bit over seasoned for our taste; however with a bit of the potato, it was perfect. An amazing entree choice and would be the best if I had not ordered... the rib-eye cap. Definitely a full 14 oz steak that is the best part of the ribeye prepared to perfection via sou vie and reverse grilled. In place of the green beans, I ordered Brussel sprouts. They had a nice heat to them via the sriracha added to the drizzle. The only misstep of the night was when the kitchen forgot my lump crab meat on top of the steak but we ordered it to go and will enjoy it at home over some grilled tuna. It was a birthday celebration celebration so Amanda brought bread pudding. It had been baked in a large muffin and was a nice not too sweet end to our meal. The caramel praline sauce that was on our sweet potatoes was equally good on the bread pudding. The restaurant was busy and nothing was rushed but the energy around us, the excellent service, and fantastic food made this a memorable meal at a place we will want to try again. read more

My first time eating here & The place was packed out so I was excited but quickly disappointed with the chargrilled oysters. They had no flavor and actually tasted not grilled. It was odd...almost like raw oysters instead of grilled. I could see the flames and the man cooking them on site but the flavor wasn't like that buttery grilled I had had before at another restaurant in Baton Rouge. The grilled shrimp salad was the second disappointing thing because it was literally lettuce, 2 slices of cucumber, 2 cherry tomatoes and 4 grilled shrimp with tails on top. The portion was very little like a side salad and with a hefty price for lettuce!!! Lettuce is cheap.....should spruce it up for presentation! There are absolutely supply chain issues that will result in menu items being unavailable. When your server (who was exceptional) has to apologize for the fact that the 'Big Pork Chop' is actually two of their 'Light Chops' because they haven't had a bone in pork chops is months, update the menu. 2. An $11 "No Cash Fee" charge? with no warning whatsoever? Beyond the questionable practice, advertise that before the check comes. Had I known, I would have brought cash for the evening. Decided to check this place out while spending the weekend visiting Sunset, LA. We were informed upon arrival that there was no seating available as they were full on reservations for the evening. We asked if the bar was available for seating and the hostess said yes, she could seat us there. Don't count on this always being the case we arrived VERY early on a Saturday evening around 5:30. The place ended up getting super packed so make a point to make a reservation or risk missing out. The bar ended up being a great spot for my friend and I to sit. Becca the bartender was PHENOMENAL. Our great experience was due largely in part to her, her expertise in her craft and welcoming nature. We easily tried half of the cocktail menu and were delighted to find she had constructed it herself. Many of the vodkas are house infused and it's honestly such a special extra touch. For drinks we ordered the blueberry lemon tini, strawberry limeade, espresso martini, Josephine punch, black berry sangria, and pineapple upside cake- you won't even find that one on the menu she whipped it up just for me. Don't a bad drink was had and those could get their own separate review. For food we tried the trio oysters which we fantastic and made a great appetizer to split. My friend got the shrimp and grits and I had the eggplant and crab dinner without the pasta. Everything was hot and fresh and so tasty plus we enjoyed watching the guys work the grill. They were doing a 32oz steak and it was HUGE but so fun to watch them grill up. This was honestly a fantastic meal and restaurant experience.
