I will start off by saying the interior is very neat and rustic-quire cozy. All the service was quite friendly and prompt! A major highlight of our visit was absolutely the soup they were offering at the time: roasted parsnip. I have never had a soup like that. What a humble parsnip must dream of becoming... to be cooked into this exalted state of being! Seasoned to perfection and served with homemade bread and salted butter, it was so divine that my mouth is watering just thinking about it as I write. Truly a marvel. All the pies were skillfully crafted and gorgeous. Beautiful pastry and well seasoned fillings, accompanied with your choice of mash. I particularly liked the cheese and leek as well as the wholegrain mustard mash. I tried a vegetarian pie with goat cheese our first night, then a more classic chicken pie the next. Both were magnificent and the portions absolutely giant! They also have both the traditional hot-water crust pies in addition to puff pastry, so it's a nice variety. As we visited around Christmastime, my party and I also benefited from the delicious mulled wine and holiday puddings, which all hit the spot. This is somewhere which, if you visit Lincoln, you absolutely must not miss!

"The Old Bakery" caught my eye on my first day when I was casually strolling through Lincoln; I was determined to give it a try - not only because of all the dining award stickers on the outside, but also, by the rustic and quaint interior. No sooner thought than done, myself and a couple of friends came here for dinner and let me tell you about our epicurean journey: Two of us had the "Peter Lundgren", which is a slowly roasted deboned pork 'chop'... it was embedded on a cushion of cinnamon-spiced cabbage and served along with tasty young potatoes. The meat was delicious and it was so soft that it fell apart in my mouth...and it was where a hint of fennel seeds unfolded its magic. For dessert, I had the pistacchio creme brulee, which also was fantastic - I felt like I was eating rich pistacchio gelato in an Italian town, only that it was covered with a crust of delicious caramelized sugar. On top of these two fabulous dishes, we also indulged in a series of freebies: home-made bread, amuse bouches, pre-dessert amuse bouches and even a post-dessert chocolate treat served along with the bill! However, I also do have to agree with the previous writer - Phil C. - that there is quite a gap between the quality of the food and the quality of the service. In fact, I was really quite disappointed by the service as it was in such stark contrast with the food: how can the food be so delicious, but the people serving it so non-compassionate and un-enthusiastic about their food? I don't expect an expert-waiter to tell me everything about the food, but I would appreciate someone who is in tune with the guests and can attend to their wishes... Food is of a very high standard and cooked by an Italian chef. The restaurant is very popular and can be booked up for a month or so in advance. They have won many awards by the normal awarding bodies like the AA and enjoy England. They have their fingers crossed to get a Michelin rating in January. Rooms are available and quite reasonably priced. The owner is always wandering around and keen to chat with customers.

The drive to the restaurant was lovely and scenic, going down dark and winding country roads until suddenly we drive around a corner and The Devonshire Arms appeared! We'd got there a little early and we sat down by the bar for some drinks. The menu was displayed on a chalkboard by the seating area and it all looked yummy! The dining area was quite small but very nice and cosy. The kitchen was open and you could see the chefs chopping and cooking away which I quite liked. I chose the rabbit and pheasant terrine with grape chutney as my starter; it came with onion bread and the slice of terrine was huge! I really wanted to finish it, but I couldn't as there was no way I'd be have enough room for my main! For the main, I had venison steak served with new potatoes (usually served with mash which I couldn't have as it had milk/cream in it) and braised red cabbage. The steak was pink and cooked to perfection and the red cabbage was sweet but with a little tart edge to it. I didn't have a dessert but the rest of the party did - my boyfriend had a deconstructed banana cheesecake and his sister had a brownie (I overheard her saying it was the best brownie she'd ever tasted!). All of the staff were really nice, especially the lady who served us that night, she was really lovely and very attentive. The Devonshire Arms fully deserves it's awards and hope it gets more in the future. If you're ever around the Sheffield area and want to venture out of the city centre for some food make sure you come here. I couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal.
