    Vegan mushroom spaghetti

Wonderful little restaurant in the oldest part of Lincoln. Very cute front room with small tables, stools and a wrap around couch. When you come in head back to the bar to place your order, they will bring it out to you. One great thing about this place is if you are local and have a let the front room is pet friendly! The food and drink selection is great. I found a great vegan spaghetti option on the menu with greatuahroom sauce. I also ordered the hummus which was spot on. The staff is wonderful also and they are resonably priced, for the quality of food you are getting. Definitely recommend this place!

I can't believe I have the honor of writing the 1st Review for a place like Wig & Mitre. Wig & Mitre, a family pub-restaurant is really what fine British dining is all about. There are cask ales, great food, and an old English atmosphere. It is located a few minutes away from Lincoln Cathedral, but on top a street literally named "Steep Hill." But don't fret, the uphill battle is worth the reward. They have an extremely hospitable and friendly staff. They are running around everywhere through the various parts of the house serving dinners, putting out cutlery, and serving bread. Yet, they are never too busy to fulfill a request. Though the a la carte menu is extremely tempting (£12-21 for a main), the set menu offers are just too good of a deal to resist. They are offered all day until 10pm. The prices are £12.75 for two courses and £15.25 for three courses. Everything on their menu is seasonal and local. Choosing from the three course set menu, I was having the chicken livers, salmon, with a ginger cake to finish. Everything tasted so freshly home-cooked it was like going home for dinner. I could not believe how delicious something as simple as chicken liver was--from the juicy liver to the gravy it was drizzled with. It literally melted in my mouth. I suppose I was being less adventurous by ordering the salmon, but I did not complain. It was flakey and juicy, and just a little undercooked in the middle. My ginger cake was warm and gooey, like it had just come out of the oven. The caramel sauce that topped it complimented it perfectly. I was so happily content at the end of my meal. All those stickers and awards in their windows do not lie. I'm not sure if I'd call this a gastro-pub, as I think it sounds a little pretentious, which W&M definitely isn't. So let's just say a pub with extremely good food. The food is definitely worth a day trip to Lincoln! P.S. Don't worry if you can't get a reservation. There are tables for people coming and going, and those that are for reservations. All of them have the same menu.

The Wig and Mitre is best approached by going to Bailgate or Castle Sqare and walking down as it is almost at the top of Steep Hill. it is close to the court in the castle and therefore gets frequented by barristers and lawyers. Tourists also like it so it can be quite crowded. Probably best to have a beer, in the bar, in the day as a pot of tea and a bikki can rush you £6-7. It does however have an excellent upstairs restaurant. I had one of my graduation dinners there. As well as a great range of food and wonderful breads they also printed us special little commemorative menus to keep. Lovely touch that. Not cheap but excellent food and polite, friendly service.

They open around 12ish and we were the first ones to be seated. We ordered soups, a chicken burger, a bean burger and a pesto wrap to eat. The soup on this particular day was turnip or parsnip (i think). Nevertheless it tasted very well and the bread that accompanied it was also beautifully baked. The chicken burger tasted well, it was a Thai style burger. It came with 2 onion rings and all the trimmings. It also came with a bowl of chips. Whilst it tasted well it felt slightly overdone, not too much, just a little bit. This made the burger fell a little dry. However, it was not catastrophic. The bean burger also was well made and was flavoursome, as was the pesto wrap. By the time we got through the burgers we were so full that we couldn't finish the chips, which was a bit sad. The service was great and the prices were regular pub-grub prices. I would definitely go back, based on this experience and sincerely hope they maintain their levels of quality, taste and service.

Thinking we must have been forgotten because it took a full hour to get our food. How long does it take to dish up one of the specials and stew at that?! I was about ready to just walk out. True, it was busy due to quiz night and we were not involved on a quiz team but we saw MANY plates of food go from the kitchen to tables while we waited for ours. Stew was good with a side of roasted veg and mash. Service was friendly. But, an hour wait for food is too long, thus the three stars.

Overall, I'm truly at about 3.5 for this place but I'll round down to 3 because 4 is definitely too high. I'd try it again to see if in Lincoln again, but overall it just seemed like a decent pub with decent cask ale. It's a Marston's pub so has selections from the Marston's range of beers as the primary offerings, which is not a problem. They had some good ones - Old Thumper, Pedigree, and Hobgoblin, plus 61 Deep which I have not had and one empty pump. They have 5 pumps in total. That is a big plus, but they had nothing particularly special. The beer (Old Thumper) was in good condition but not perfect condition so it could have been better. It seems pretty good but was a bit slapdash in service and how it was run. It was very crowded. The place itself is nice and has a great location between the castle and cathedral. It definitely gets 4 for the place and location, as well as the decent range of good cask ales, 3 stars for the less then perfect condition of the beer and the general impression that the service and cleaning are decent but could be better.

The walking ghost tours start opposite it and it is a great place for a warm, drink and loo when at the famous Christmas Market here. It has been here longer than I can remember and the second floor is a separate restaurant that opens from 19:00hrs until closing nightly and all day at weekends. There is emphasis on big value meals: beef stew and dumplings, vegetarian country pie, 8oz steak, and lots of Sunday roasts. When we went on the evening ghost tour once in December we needed a drink and a warm afterwards. We had a 10 year old with us. We formed a circle round him to hide him and bought him cokes but the staff knew and no-one said anything. A nice venue, good food and friendly atmosphere. Reasonable priced drinks.
