We drove about 40 minutes north to Lincoln for American Pancakes at Damon's. That's how serious we are about our cravings. I mean we have driven two hours to Bury St. Edmunds for fish tacos and root beer and got neither... so why not. When you walk in... it is like walking into a movie theatre or a bowling alley. To the right is a little booth where there is a hostess... or two. It was about a 10 minute wait for us. Unlike other restaurants, it does mimic an American restaurant with a nice large area to wait. Bar stools on the wall to the left, a lounge and bar straight on.
I don't know if this is only a brunch time thing, but they had a table with coffee that you could help yourself to, which I LOVED... I did not have my usual coffee this morning because I knew I was going to order coffee with my breakfast, but this... this was fantastic. They called us over a PA system... not sure I like that part as you can hear it all over the restaurant, including while you are sitting enjoying your food.
We were taken to a booth. Work BFF and I were commenting on how we thought that if this place had existed (we don't know when it was built) in about the 1950s or 1960s that the clientele then probably dressed up to the nines and it was probably an exclusive club with a lounge singer... similiar to Vegas really. It did really remind me of the U.S. (still undetermined on whether that is good or bad...). Anyway we looked at the breakfast menu, but let's be honest... we were on a mission. Mission American Pancakes. Work BFF and I also thought that the menu was just right... meaning in the U.S. when you go to some place like IHOP or Denny's, you get a squillion breakfast choices and it is so difficult to choose, especially at 2 a.m.
Work BFF deviated from the mission slightly and ordered the French Toast with... (wait for it...) a side of pancake. Yes. Pancake. Singular. I told her to order it because I wouldn't judge, but that it would end up on the review :). I ordered the Pancake Grand Slam... the person that wrote the menu must have visited a Denny's... Anyway, we got a jug of water with ice in it and the waitresses continuously walking by to make sure you are topped up on coffee. It did not take too long for the food to come out.
In American breakfast restaurant style, they had the melamine oval plates. I was a little bit disappointed that it was not streaky bacon (bacon if you are American) because streaky bacon, frankly works better with pancakes and maple syrup. The flavour is stronger/smokier and the crispiness works with the soft fluffy pancakes. Seriously. I decided to eat the other items before the pancakes and leave them for last. Eggs and bacon were nothing special, but the herby potatoes... I had the mixed (with onions, green peppers, sausage) herby roasted potatoes, they were delicious. A plate of those with a poached egg on top would be a great brunch item.
So. The pancakes. They didn't serve them with butter. The melted butter on top, to me, is important. The pancakes were definitely not made with buttermilk as it says on the menu. If they had been made with buttermilk, they would have been fluffier and they would have had a cake-like flavor, but these... I don't even think they were made with milk, I think they were made with water if they were made from scratch. They were not the worst pancakes I have had, but they are not the best. I'll be honest, I really wanted to go back into the kitchen and show them how to make them. Work BFF's French Toast was ok... the cinnamon in the batter was lovely... just how we do it, but 1) it could have used a longer soak in the egg and milk mixture to ensure that it is coated and 2) it could have used a bit longer in the frying pan or on the griddle, which would have been apparent anyway had the bread soaked longer in the batter.
Our breakfast didn't break the bank... with my Pancake Grand Slam and complementary coffee it was £8.45. Work BFF's orange juice, French Toast, and one pancake was about £9. All that said, while I wouldn't wake up early to drive up for breakfast, I would not be opposed to trying lunch or dinner there. read more
