    Pancake Grand Slam
    Heather L.

We drove about 40 minutes north to Lincoln for American Pancakes at Damon's. That's how serious we are about our cravings. I mean we have driven two hours to Bury St. Edmunds for fish tacos and root beer and got neither... so why not. When you walk in... it is like walking into a movie theatre or a bowling alley. To the right is a little booth where there is a hostess... or two. It was about a 10 minute wait for us. Unlike other restaurants, it does mimic an American restaurant with a nice large area to wait. Bar stools on the wall to the left, a lounge and bar straight on. I don't know if this is only a brunch time thing, but they had a table with coffee that you could help yourself to, which I LOVED... I did not have my usual coffee this morning because I knew I was going to order coffee with my breakfast, but this... this was fantastic. They called us over a PA system... not sure I like that part as you can hear it all over the restaurant, including while you are sitting enjoying your food. We were taken to a booth. Work BFF and I were commenting on how we thought that if this place had existed (we don't know when it was built) in about the 1950s or 1960s that the clientele then probably dressed up to the nines and it was probably an exclusive club with a lounge singer... similiar to Vegas really. It did really remind me of the U.S. (still undetermined on whether that is good or bad...). Anyway we looked at the breakfast menu, but let's be honest... we were on a mission. Mission American Pancakes. Work BFF and I also thought that the menu was just right... meaning in the U.S. when you go to some place like IHOP or Denny's, you get a squillion breakfast choices and it is so difficult to choose, especially at 2 a.m. Work BFF deviated from the mission slightly and ordered the French Toast with... (wait for it...) a side of pancake. Yes. Pancake. Singular. I told her to order it because I wouldn't judge, but that it would end up on the review :). I ordered the Pancake Grand Slam... the person that wrote the menu must have visited a Denny's... Anyway, we got a jug of water with ice in it and the waitresses continuously walking by to make sure you are topped up on coffee. It did not take too long for the food to come out. In American breakfast restaurant style, they had the melamine oval plates. I was a little bit disappointed that it was not streaky bacon (bacon if you are American) because streaky bacon, frankly works better with pancakes and maple syrup. The flavour is stronger/smokier and the crispiness works with the soft fluffy pancakes. Seriously. I decided to eat the other items before the pancakes and leave them for last. Eggs and bacon were nothing special, but the herby potatoes... I had the mixed (with onions, green peppers, sausage) herby roasted potatoes, they were delicious. A plate of those with a poached egg on top would be a great brunch item. So. The pancakes. They didn't serve them with butter. The melted butter on top, to me, is important. The pancakes were definitely not made with buttermilk as it says on the menu. If they had been made with buttermilk, they would have been fluffier and they would have had a cake-like flavor, but these... I don't even think they were made with milk, I think they were made with water if they were made from scratch. They were not the worst pancakes I have had, but they are not the best. I'll be honest, I really wanted to go back into the kitchen and show them how to make them. Work BFF's French Toast was ok... the cinnamon in the batter was lovely... just how we do it, but 1) it could have used a longer soak in the egg and milk mixture to ensure that it is coated and 2) it could have used a bit longer in the frying pan or on the griddle, which would have been apparent anyway had the bread soaked longer in the batter. Our breakfast didn't break the bank... with my Pancake Grand Slam and complementary coffee it was £8.45. Work BFF's orange juice, French Toast, and one pancake was about £9. All that said, while I wouldn't wake up early to drive up for breakfast, I would not be opposed to trying lunch or dinner there.

The novelty wears off and the subject leaves itself open to criticism. Smaller, smellier and more tacky than I remembered, the burgers tasted worse and the portions felt smaller (although this is not necessarily a bad thing). Poor quality patties rendered what was an enjoyable experience worse than it should have been and a thin lining of grease over everything made the whole charade feel dirty. My 1/2lb beef and bacon was mediocre and my companion's pepperoni, tomato and cheese tasted like a cheap pizza; my sister's blue cheese was nice, however this was in no doubt due to the sauce managing to disguise the flavour of their value frozen burgers. What saved the meal were the fantastic milkshakes (Oreo, peanut butter and Irish cream, the latter turning out to be the favourite) and the ridiculous peanut butter crunch sundae, the toffee apple pie leaving us disappointed. £20 per head, which is what you expect to pay for a novelty such as this, and which is why this restaurant will manage to survive despite the food failing to live up to the kitsch glamour and the enterprising theme. Restaurants like this should never be harshly judged on their food, and if they are you're missing the point. It's about the experience, the novelty and the ride. It's a nostalgia trip for people who never experienced it first time round; an exalted view through red, white and blue tinted sunglasses at a specific period of Americana that is itself viewed through misty eyes. How many Americans revere and laud the humble pub, jellied eels and Beefeaters? Cliched, over the top and in poor taste, replete with a decaying Mystery Machine and muscle car in the car park (genuinely!), I'll nevertheless come back time and time again. It's enjoyable, and offers us Brits something different, and perhaps more importantly, fun.

We shared the Wings and Rings which were supposed to come with some dip but didn't, luckily they were very good and we didn't bother asking for any as we ate them too fast. I chose the Bluegrass Crispy Chicken sandwich, which was the nicest fried chicken I've had in the UK so far. And I am slightly obsessed with fried chicken so that's saying something. The only nitpick there is that there is no reason for this to be a sandwich, the bun adds nothing to the experience and the chicken breast shape makes it awkward. They should just make it a plate and add a biscuit or some mashed potatoes or something instead. It was nice to see they had iced tea on the drinks menu since that is bafflingly rare in the UK, but for some reason the only option had apple juice and mint in it. It was fine, but a bit on the sweet side and not really what I wanted. But that's on me, ultimately. The beer selection is fine but unexceptional. It was a Saturday night and the place was super busy but we did get seated reasonably fast. Service at the table was reasonably good. Service at the bar was nonexistent (bartender was busy but not crazily so, still managed to avoid serving us or making eye contact for ten minutes until we were whisked away to our table). All in all a bit of a mix but solid on the food front, I look forward to trying the rest of the menu.

This establishment markets itself as an American type BBQ eatery, but the food is no where near. The ribs were the worst I've ever had. They were the consistency of jerky with no where near the flavor. They needed to be off the grill about an hour or two sooner, assuming they were cooked here rather than arrived frozen and pre-cooked in the first place. The beef brisket was drowned in sauce so there really wasn't any beef flavor to be found. The pork (as marketed in their logo) was overcooked as well. The fries were good and the beer was cold, which helped in washing it all down. One should/would not expect American quality meat in Europe, but it should be better than this.
