The stag is a welcoming village pub, set on the Green in Barkston. We ate there this evening, staying at a nearby hotel. It is just off the A607 and has a small car park, with additional parking along Church Street.
The historic stone-built building dates back to the 17th century, with additions in the 18th and 19th century. The interior is warm and homely with low ceilings, and the bar area has bare stone walls. Both are on the dining area have open fireplaces, which must be lovely in the winter. There is additional seating at the rear, along the conservatory.
They have an extensive and eclectic menu, and on our visit there were lots of specials on the chalkboard. Although we are on a Tuesday, though our half dozen covers by 6:30pm, so it might be worth Booking ahead if it's busy.
We had the mixed olives £3.50 to start, followed by the roost line of cod with ham, crushed new potatoes and vegetables £19.50; and the asparagus risotto with summer vegetables £19.
The food was very well prepared, and the portions enormous. The risotto was a little overcooked for my taste, but very tasty, and came with a Parmesan crisp. The cod was cooked well (i.e. not overdone) and the crushed potatoes very well seasoned.
Overall, with two beers and service, we paid £55. For the quality and quantity, we thought this was very good value.
Staff were very friendly and without having to be asked, brought tapwater to the table, as well as our beers. Service was swift, despite there being five covers almost all at once.
Note that the kitchen closes earlier than the pub. I suggest checking the opening and closing time on their website, as it varies from the stated hours here.
