a basket of tortilla chips

This has been my dads favorite restaurant in Brandon for years. We don't go often, but that is about to change. Everything was served hot and it was very tasty. This guacamole is clearly made fresh, which is different from other places in the area. There was only one waitress working tonight and she did a great job of making sure our drinks were refilled! Overall it was a great night!

Recently ate here and their chips and salsa was so good that I bought 3 servings of it for football tail-gating. The place is small, but they have some excellent Mexican food.

The best place to go for authentic Mexican food! I hate Tex-mex and grew up in California! My family has been eating here since 1993! If you want real Mexican this is where you eat? ! Update--- For the first time in almost 30years I'm extremely disappointed in the food. I don't know what's going on, the food was so bad that I'm wondering did it change ownership, we're the cooks on strike, was this a new chef in training? The food was horrible and this has been a family staple for decades since we moved back to MS from SoCal. Now I'm wondering where will we eat real Mexican food now? The tamales with the Chile con carne was odd, the color looked like vomit and it was bland, also they cooked the onions when forever the onions have always been raw! The chips were a THICK cut and not the freshly cut and daily made thin cut from scratch chips they are known for, the salsa was bland and horrible! I asked was it out of the cab and she said the peppers were a bad batch? But it was also missing onions! The food was horrible! The chihuahua tacos (my favorite) were BLAND! The meat had zero seasoning and was dry! The best thing we are that day we're the retired beans, which I never ate before because everything else would always be so pleasing I never had room for the rice and beans. I want to know what happened! Is this place under new owners? Why was the food terrible after almost 30years of perfection!

I'm pretty sure it's not authentic Mexican food. Food tasted like it was from a can heated up. Good reviews must be family members!

Yeah, no. The menus smelled like straight vomit, like they were wiped off with a rancid, sour rag,…read moremaybe? Wretched. I had the fish tacos and it was just fish on a flat tortilla. No lettuce, cheese, cabbage, sauce, or anything else that would make it a taco. But I did get 3 small cups of mystery liquid that I assume was to dip or pour over? No idea. I tasted one and it was extremely spicy and did not have a good flavor. My husband got a P5 Happy Plate and it had an odd taste. We should have left after the smelly menus. We told the girl at the checkout about how they smelled and she just looked at us. No response.

If you do muss out on this place, it is your loss. Thanks to Yelp and the overall positive reviews, I was seeking out El Cabrito and I still drove by it, lol. Oh well, not a big deal and in no time, I was parked in their parking lot and walking in. I was seated and the overall ambiance was what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. Nothing fancy, but that's okay. For me, I have always found the best Mexican food in these mom-and-pop, more humble type places. My server was friendly and I opted to go with one of the burritos. I believe that they called it their grande steak burrito. I enjoyed my burrito and for ten dollars, it was competitively priced. I would definitely recommend El Cabrito.

The food in the cafe in the back looked like it had been sitting for hours and it was only 10 am. Highly deceptive pricing! They do not put prices on anything. Staff will speak only in Spanish to you. As a Latina, I find that this not only is unprofessional but not tailored to serve a community that is in need for reasonable pricing. I am heading to Hattiesburg area to pick up some of these staples bcuz there is no reason these prices should represent California prices.

Carniceria Valdez is literally a counter in the back of a Mexican grocery, but coming out of that kitchen is some mighty fine Mexican food. I went with a couple of tacos and a gordita. For the gordita, I went with chorizo as the protein and for the tacos I went with the asada and the barbacoa. The tacos were just under two dollars each ($1.99 to be exact) and the gordita was, I believe, $3.50. I probably enjoyed the gordita the most and the chorizo was definitely my favorite protein out of my three choices. The staff was friendly enough, though the ordering process was you walk up to the counter and order your meal and they call you up when it is ready. All in all, I would definitely recommend here and I will give it five stars.
