If you want a quick drink, straight to the point well you can come here, at Café Walvis. I don't quite know what to make of it... It's wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. Maybe it's because I was craving milkshakes and they didn't have it... So I may be biased but honestly who isn't? We had this bio drink that tasted like liquified malt (that's absolutely not a compliment). My friend and I sat on the left side of the café when you come from Dansaert. The setting was weird: I felt like I was sitting in the street. I guess if you're going for that vibe then it's ok? Well not for me, I tried it but you won't see me there anymore. No harsh feelings. It's just that I'm over Cafés that have the: we're actually only meant for students that drink to much Jupiler or for Café-gangers who brush their teeth with Maes in the morning. A laid back café right on the corner. The place itself is really comfortable with wooden tables and a mix of hip hop, rap, and older tunes from the earlier part of this century playing in the background. The service staff is young and friendly. We got there around 11 or so but the kitchen didn't open until 12 so we relaxed with some lattes and a chocolate croissant which were nothing special; however, once the kitchen opened and I ordered the salmon bagel (my sister had the salmon salad), I was able to enjoy a fantastic meal for a reasonable price. The sign outside reads, "why not eat at Walvis?" From experience, I can think of a couple reasons. I've been to Walvis twice, lured in by the intriguing location and decor. First visit was for a brunch. I ordered an omelet norvegienne which arrived as a small plate of soggy, unseasoned, scrambled eggs with scraps of smoked salmon. A basket of stale white bread was served for the table. I hoped it was a fluke, and was back a few weeks later for dinner. This time, the experience was actually far worse. The selection of beers on tap is not bad, but for most of the usual brews Walvis charges more than comparable bars. I took some kind of pils that I haven't seen anywhere else, and now I think I know why. They could have served me Budweiser and there would have been no difference. So Walvis bears the shame of serving me the worst beer I've had in Belgium. And a good pint might have saved this review, because the food was ~sickening~. Long wait for bungled basics like a burger and lasagna. The dishes weren't even hot enough for the cheese to have melted and the ground beef was still raw in the center. Waiter was absent and, when we finally caught up with him, unapologetic. For everything this spot has in aesthetics, the food, service, and drinks are all way wrong. Took 10 minutes to come out to greet me.....i tried to ask about the beers to place an order.....but the guy went and got me a drinks menu and then never came back.....i sat there for 20 more minutes....it was a nice night outside, so I kept sitting there to see how long out of curiosity.....but he never came back....so i went across the street to a small store and bought a beer for the walk home.....some servers shouldn't be servers.... read more

We enjoyed our lunch at Cafe Walvis. We opted for the goats cheese salad - It was simple and tasty, with warm goats cheese on cinnamon spiced bread, nuts and sultanas. The staff were very accommodating. I forgot to tell the waiter that we were vegetarian and therefore didn't want the bacon. When the salads came with bacon I explained my mistake and they changed them without complaint, even refusing my offer of payment for the first two. The frites were delicious as was the home made mayonnaise. Would definitely recommend a visit. read more

This used to be my favourite pub, but then ownership changed. They serve food now. Cheap but very mediocre and rather bland. Okay if you ran out of other options, but otherwise I would go elsewhere. The interior is really nice, which makes it a pleasant spot to linger but be aware that service can be quite slow and a lot of mistakes are made so check your orders and your bill. read more

Nice pub for drinks. In the back there is a 'family space' where kids can play with boxes of toys and books. My 3 year old had a great time! The food is really disappointing. We ordered the vegetarian burger which was 14€. It was advertised as 'artisanal' but I'm pretty sure it was bought at Carrefour or Delhaize and reheated for us. It came with a sad looking pile of sweet potato fries. The burger only came with some rucola leaves, not even a tomato. Way over priced. Come here for drinks, but eat elsewhere. read more

Food was good not as good as the pizza across the street but the seating was better there was a great alcohol selection and the staff was lovely. My friend and I both had cheeseburgers with Belgian fries and mojitos and they were good. read more

Went here last night for some quiet drinks, it was definitely worth the visit! There was a great atmosphere, the bar staff were lovely, and the DJ played good music on genuine records. Only downside was the drinks were too cheap to get on card (€15 euro minimum spend), but cheap drinks is hardly a problem. read more

I like Café Walvis. It might be at the edge of the Dansaert area (close to the canal) and thus not attracting the same crowds as some other places, it has a lovely, simple, typically Belgian interior with big windows to stare out from. The music could be toned down a little, especially if you want to go there to have a chat. But apart from that, certainly recommended. read more

Honestly way too expensive for what it is. Seriously, 15€ for a salad?? I think this place is pretentious and worth half the price of what it's given. Even the food could be much better. There isn't much effort put in the service either with a waitress ignoring you half the time. Still don't understand why this place is so talked about. With better prices and a better service it would do way better. read more
