I love café Ritter because it's such a historical café to the city, the service is lovely and the atmosphere is great. They also have delicious sachertorte and I'm sure their other food is good too. You can stay for as long as you like and even some seats have outlets next to them too! read more

I was on Mariahilferstasse awaiting the start of a movie. Having an hour to go, I decided to take a walk. Spontaneously I decided to stop in here. I had only 3 euros in my pocket, a small craving for caffeine, and espresso beverages fit the bill nicely (pun intended). I ordered a klein mocha. It was brought to me very quickly, but it seemed like they put too little mocha in there. It was essentially like getting an espresso in a cup where a mocha had once been. Espresso was nothing to write home about either. Also, I realize that the location is probably expensive, but, 2.50 seemed a little on the steep side. read more

People have said that the service here is curt but professional. I've been there a few times and have found it to be friendly and helpful as well as professional. When you come in they say "just sit anywhere you want". The first time I went I assumed they took CC's and I didn't have much cash on me. When I asked for the check by waiving my card the waiter informed me that it was cash only. I thought "Oh no, here we go". But the waiter calmly said to just go around the corner where there was an atm. He didn't stress or call the mgr. He just let me go. I've been back a couple of times and I love the place. Lovely comfortable decor with typical european service - standoffish. However the coffee was spectacular. We had to stop for the sacher tort when we were in Vienna. It was tasty with a crystal crust on the chocolate, dry not-so-sweet cake with apricot filling. I really enjoyed that the smoking section was separate. Awesome place, beautiful ceilings and the cutest window tables I've seen. You simply must try their hot chocolate. The whipped cream is unsweetened (or only slightly) and it's fabulous! I tried their Sacher cake and it is good, though not quite the same as Caffe Sacher's famous torte:) The Banana torte is also good and they make nice espresso. read more

Cafe Ritter gets five stars from me, not because it's "Woohoo! As good as it gets!" out of all possible cafes, but because it's "as good as it gets" as far as the Yea Olde Traditional Viennese Coffee Houses are concerned. (And, if compared to all other coffee houses, I'd still give Ritter four stars.) See, Vienna is known for its coffee houses, yet I find most of these places to be extra smokey and the waitstaff to be extra pissed off (and unwillingly to speak English, despite being tourist attractions), AND the coffee is ALWAYS BURNT. However, NOT at Ritter. I find that, for a "traditional Wiener coffee house", Ritter is quite an exception, serving a decent Melange (cappuccino), and the waiters are nice enough, especially considering they work all day wearing suits! (Note: Ritter is one of the places that has both "Melange" and "cappuccino" on the menu. The cappuccino has whipped cream, the melange doesn't, but your server is likely to verify if you really want the whipped cream if you order a cappuccino and it seems like you're not familiar with the way of the Wiener/the Melange.) The green salad at Ritter is a rather traditional salad with a sweet dressing, and it's pretty amazing. Quite simple, but very tasty. Their egg and potato and Knödel dishes are all quite good, too, and I think those come with salads. (Their menu is also in English, y'all.) I think the first time I went to Ritter, I had the Palatschinken (crepes), with chocolate and whipped cream, and that was super delicious. This is another place I bring most of our visitors to Vienna, and definitely the only old/traditional Viennese coffee shop I visit with any kind of frequency. This is a classic curt service you would expect to find in Vienna. This is probably the most classic Konditerei that you can find outside of the first district. The attraction of this place is that it still has a smoking section. It's a beautiful cafe, with beautiful cakes- but all things considered, I STILL don't like the dense and dry character of Vienna desserts. This place gets three stars because even if the service is classically curt and more off than on- the traditional waiter gave me a smile when I finally asked for the bill (in english) and therefore my encounters here were a 100% less scary than they usually are. read more

I stopped here after a movie in Haydn cinema - I thought it would be nice to sit down with my friends to discuss the movie and this was exactly the right place for that. Cafe Ritter is one of the typical traditional Viennese coffee houses, with serious (but not too grumpy) waiters, classy interrior and a rather silent atmosphere (but maybe that's just because I went there rather late in the evening). I had their hot chocolate which was amazing and definitely one of the best I've ever had. It was 3,90, if I remember correctly, but it was worth it. I was surprised to see that the smoking section is much bigger than the non-smoking one, but I guess that's the way it is in these classic coffee houses (please, correct me if I am wrong, but I've got the impression that elderly Austrians love to enjoy their coffee with a cigarette ;)) Sitting in the smoking section is not a problem for me, but I can understand if people are not happy about getting a table there - which is often the case just because the non-smoking section is full. The smoking part has a certain charm to it, though. It was much more silent, people were mostly reading there, or having silent discussions with each other. I felt like I've travelled in time - time when people didn't stare in their smartphones while sipping a coffee. read more

Cafe Ritter is the perfect place to have a traditional Viennese coffee house experience without all the tourists that you get at Cafe Central. All the furniture, and the waiters too, are old and elegant. They have a non-smoking section, but if it's an authentic experience you're going for, you gotta sit in the smoke ;) Note: Like any old Viennese cafe, this is the type of place where the waiter is above the guest, so be extra sure that you're polite. read more

I think the Ritter is best to get away from the shopping-turbulences of the Mariahilferstrasse. Sometimes to boost up for the next shopping-round with a melange and a Gugelhupf - and getting new thougts by browsing the newspapers and magazines, ventilating the brain. Freshly brainstormed, at the third melange (and also some Apfelstrudel - to free the mind from stomach-control) follow the new ideas, get more information or put it into action. Did I mention, that I love to be in a Kaffeehaus? Sometimes it's crowded here (especially at Saturdays in Advent, wenn Mariahilferstrasse is pedestrianised) - but still more relaxing than coffeeshops. read more

I entered the building and approached the impressive bar where there is an equally impressive display of Austrian cakes and pastries. The Mozarttorte quickly caught my eye; I found myself a small both near the window in the smoking section and ordered myself the Mozarttorte and a cappuccino. The very friendly waiter quickly brought me my coffee and my cake. I tried the coffee first and was quite pleased; the cappuccino had been topped with a generous portion of fresh Schlag. I find that a good portion of cream added to coffee has the effect of really balancing the acidity of the coffee and of really bringing out the nuttiness in a coffee--this was certainly the case here. Café Ritter also uses Fair Trade coffee--which means you can really enjoy your afternoon cup. We ate outside here at Cafe Ritter. The service was just ok. We got sausages that were very long, skinny, and just tasted like American hot dogs. My currywurst was a let down too- my sausages just sat in this thin sauce and did not absorb it well or anything. My aunt got some spinach dish that was like mashed up spinach baby food. read more

I was visiting Wien as a tourist with my family and we wanted to experience a real Wiener Cafe, so we tried this place. We ordered apfel strudel, my wife drank coffee and the kids and I wanted a hot chocolate. The strudel was OK, but not great, my wife was happy with the coffee, however, the hot "chocolate" was a disaster. Right away it looked suspicious, since instead of being dark brown, it was just barely darker than milk. The taste confirmed the looks: it tasted like boiled milk, which I hate. It probably had maybe 5% of the cocoa of what it shouldhave, to be called hot chocolate. I swear that the hot chocolates you can get for free at several airports from coffee machines are a thousand more like hot chocolate than this. If they had given me a Nesquik cocoa it would have been much better. What a shame. That was not the experience we were looking for. read more
