After almost 10 years, it's time for a review update for St. Marlo Country Club in Duluth. I…read morebelieve everything in my original review dated 10/3/2010 still holds true to this day, but I think a more in-depth review is in order. I've always liked St. Marlo. I think it's one of the more scenic public courses in metro Atlanta. It's a country club inside a gated subdivision, so it does exude some private club flair. A lot of impressive-looking mansions line the course. You can book tee times for St. Marlo online directly through St. Marlo's website (www.stmarlo.com) as well as GolfNow and TeeOff.com. The base price for tee times across the three platforms are generally the same. However, GolfNow and TeeOff.com also offer special limited tee times (e.g. Hot Deals or Deal Times) at a discounted rate. The last time I played here, I found it best to book our group's tee time using TeeOff.com. There were no booking, convenience, or other fees tacked on and I didn't have to pay anything up front. We simply paid at the pro shop. Our Saturday morning round cost $71.68 per golfer ($66.99 + $4.69 tax). For the quality of the course and amenities, I thought it was a fair price. St. Marlo's alluring design should come as no surprise because its architect is Denis Griffiths who designed other beautiful Georgia courses like the Chateau and Woodlands courses at Chateau Elan, Chestatee in Dawsonville, Chicopee Woods in Gainesville, Georgia National in McDonough, RiverPines in Alpharetta, The Creek at Hard Labor State Park in Rutledge, and The Georgia Club in Statham. The course is par-72 has 4 sets of tees (gold, blue, white, red) which can be mixed for a total of 7 different course yardages/ratings/slopes for men and 5 for women. From the tips, the course comes in at just under 7,000 yards at 6,923 yards with a rating/slope of 73.7/140. I've always played from the white tees where the course measures 6,123 yards with a 69.1/123 rating/slope. Personally, I've always found the course to be difficult, but I don't think it's challenging enough to keep beginners or casual golfers away as long as they're cognizant of their pace of play. Pace of play, by the way, I think is good. On a busy Saturday morning stacked with tee times, our threesome was able to finish in under 4.5 hours. We regularly crossed paths with a ranger throughout our round. St. Marlo is a course that winds and weaves its way throughout a dense residential subdivision. As big as the houses are, there's not a whole lot of space in between them. A lot of fairways are lined with rows of tall, multistory houses that are thinly guarded by trees. If you're a walker, I'd think twice before walking a round here because some of the walks between green to next tee can be rather long (e.g. curved uphill cart paths, crossing subdivision roads, etc.). The golf carts are fairly standard E-Z-GO electric carts. They have coolers, sand for your divots, and USB ports (bring your own cable). The carts were in good condition the last time I played. The carts have pin sheets and the starter will place a card with your tee time, the day's cart rule (e.g. 90 degrees, cart path only), pin position, and restroom door code in your cart. Men's and women's restrooms are located at the 6th tee and in between the 14th green and 15th tee. The golf course is hilly, but not significantly more so than your typical Georgia course. There are plenty of strategically-placed bunkers and lots of water to deal with (there are at least a half-dozen ponds on the course). I think the front nine has more scenic holes than the back. They include No. 3, a par-3 over water with a small waterfall next to the green, and Nos. 6 (par-3) and 7 (par-4) whose tee shots play over the same body of water. You'll have to place your drive carefully on No. 7 as the hole essentially makes a 90-degree turn to the left on the uphill approach. The approach on No. 9, a par-5, is interesting because of how drastically elevated the green is. It's almost as if you're hitting up to a green situated atop a cliff. What is this? Wicked 18 for the Super Nintendo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/True_Golf_Classics:_Wicked_18)? Seriously though, your irons and wedges have more loft than you might think so the green is certainly hittable in regulation by the average golfer so long as the shot is well-struck. St. Marlo has bentgrass greens and Bermuda grass fairways and tees. On average, the course has been in good shape the times I've played it. The tee boxes could use some work, but the fairways have always been fine for the most part. The greens, which are big, have always been smooth and in good to great condition (outside of aeration of course). The bunkers have been OK too. There's a driving range and two practice putting greens. The clubhouse is large and stately. Along with the pro shop, there's a bar and grill, and locker rooms (small). On the course, there's food and beverage cart service and ball washers at every tee.

I don't know how many people use yelp to find a golf course but Lanier Islands Legacy golf course…read moreis definitely one of the best courses in GA. I absolutely love this course. The quality of the course, staff, practice facility, carts, food is A1. First off, I ain't gonna lie it's expensive! But good news is you do get range balls with your greens fees and unlimited snacks/ soft drinks!!!(my favorite). Yes I said unlimited. I'm sure if you go in there and fill bags up with stuff they might say something but you get it. Second off, driving range and putting green = phenomenal. Third off and most important , the course..... is so beautiful. I'm a serious golfer (4 handicap) so my feelings might be different than others. The actual layout of the course is pretty difficult but the scenery is grand. In order to score great on this course you do have to play smart and have a strategy. I suggest to pay attention to everything before swinging! Keep in mind the greens are FAST. Last suggestion, if you're not the best golfer bring lots of balls because there is a ton of water on this course and get some practice in before hand! If you truly play the course a lot of shots will require you to get the ball in the air. Fourth. Besides the snacks and the absolutely beautiful golf course, I LOVE the way they start you out. Basically most courses just give you the keys to the cart and tell you to get. Here, the first hole is a distance away from the clubhouse so when the starter feels as if the tee box is cleared he will explain the course / rules with your group, give you the keys to the cart, and tell you to get on with it. And I absolutely loveeeeee that. It allows your group to be at the tee box without anyone causing distractions.Love it!!! Last time we were out here the course was quite backed up. The Marshall was constantly trying to get the people in front of us moving and he kept stopping by to apologize to us. The quality of service at Lanier is awesome. They truly make you feel special and that's why I love going back and throwing my money at them. This is by far my favorite course I've ever played at in GA and other states. I hope the review was helpful for the one person that might read this ! If you go play, good luck!

Unacceptable Customer Service - Rude, Discriminatory Behavior…read more If I could give zero stars, I would. I had the absolute worst customer service experience at Lanier Legacy Golf Club, and it was nothing short of humiliating and infuriating. On March 8th, I booked a 3:00 PM tee time for my wife and her sister. Due to heavy rain, I called the pro shop, and a kind and professional male staff member issued an 18-hole rain check, which I appreciated. However, when I called today to use that rain check, I was met with the most unprofessional, rude, and outright hostile treatment from a staff member named Leah Stephenson (spelling may be incorrect). From the moment she picked up the phone, she was aggressive, dismissive, and condescending. She: Constantly interrupted me while I was speaking. Raised her voice at me for absolutely no reason. Refused to listen or assist me properly and instead transferred my call without helping. Treated me with an attitude that felt blatantly discriminatory. It's truly disgusting that a golf course with such a good reputation allows this kind of horrible customer service to take place. I couldn't help but feel that I was treated this way because I am Asian and an international guest. This was my first experience with this level of rudeness and discrimination since moving to Atlanta, and I am still in shock that a business like this allows such behavior to continue unchecked. If Lanier Legacy Golf Club actually cares about its reputation, they need to: Implement serious customer service training so this NEVER happens again. Ensure all guests--regardless of nationality--are treated with basic human decency. I will make sure that everyone I know hears about this disgraceful experience. I will also be reporting this incident to management and any relevant authorities to ensure this club is held accountable for discriminatory and unprofessional practices. Avoid this place if you expect even the bare minimum of respect. If you're not a local, prepare to be treated as if you don't belong.

Steel Canyon is all about expectations…read more You need to know that Steel Canyon is located in the middle of a large power grid near Morgan Falls. Using this space for golf and reclaiming it rather than it just sitting there for power lines is actually quite smart. For the cost for two of us to play and a cart ($65), it was a great Sunday golf outing. Sure the course isn't in the best shape. Yes, I would prefer to the tee box to not have AstroTurf and a manhole cover open. However, I wasn't expecting "country club" and Steel Canyon delivers in a fun, shorter course that is great for starters and practice. The staff is friendly enough and it is a relaxed atmosphere. You won't feel rushed or judged if you are just starting our or simply just looking to have fun.

The PGA Championship returned to Atlanta Athletic Club for the first time in 10 years. As soon as…read moretickets went on sale last year, I purchased immediately. There was no way I was going to miss a major championship in town. The tournament was a blast and I have to give credit to the Atlanta Athletic Club, PGA, the 3,500 volunteers, and everyone else who helped put this massive event together. From a spectator perspective, the tournament was very well organized. Free parking was available at Gwinnett Arena. From there, air-conditioned shuttle buses transported us to the course. There was no wait whatsoever to and from the course as far as the shuttles were concerned. The system seemed seamless. Along the way, there was always someone available to assist if anyone had a question. Located just inside the Atlanta Athletic Club gates were a whole host of enormous tents. Inside, you'd find everything from the golf shop to a Mercedes-Benz showroom to golf instruction bays with PGA Teaching Professionals. The golf shop was massive and inside was a PGA Tour fan's dream. They had for sale golf equipment, attire, t-shirts, hats, etc. in every size, fit, and color you can imagine, as well as all other sorts of golf paraphernalia. I could've easily spent all day there. Two of the tents were the "PGA Fan Experience" and the "PGA Learning Center." Inside the Fan Experience, you could record video and various metrics on your golf swing, take a picture with Jim Furyk, design a golf bag where the best design would actually be created and used by either Furyk, Anthony Kim, or Matt Kuchar at next year's PGA Championship, play games to win one of the many autographed golf bags on display, and more. At the Learning Center, you could register to take lessons and receive golf instruction on-site from a whole host of PGA Teaching Professionals. The golf instruction included video analysis, customized putting tips, and swing lessons. Since you reserve a time slot, you were free to roam the course and come back at your allotted time. Results from the video analyses were recorded and emailed to all participants. And the best part about it all: it was free. My setup and swing was compared side-by-side to Tiger Woods and Stuart Appleby. In the middle of the course, there was a huge air-conditioned tent setup by American Express and Delta. If you are an AmEx or Delta SkyMiles card holder, you could access this tent to relax and take a break. Inside, there were refreshments, cushioned seating and tables, nicer bathrooms, and leaderboards. When players were at the range, they had name tags to help you identify them. I just so happened to walk on the range while Tiger was there. He said hi to last year's champ, Martin Kaymer, and walked off. Tiger was the only player who had security following him around. Both the range and the practice putting green were slammed with players. It was neat to watch everyone warming up and fine-tuning their game. Kaymer brought out his own putting contraption to help his alignment. While the weather was hot, the course was in immaculate shape. The Highlands Course at AAC is a beautiful and hilly course. My friends and I spent most of our time on the back nine. It's amazing how good the players are, from Rory McIlroy hitting to within 10-feet from a fairway bunker on the 457-yard par 4 11th to Anthony Kim going pin high on the 267-yard par 3 15th. As the old Tour tagline went: "These guys are good." Anthony Kim autographed the back of someone's iPhone between the 14th green and 15th tee. At the end of the 18th hole, players would make their way back to the clubhouse. There was an autograph area near the clubhouse and several of the players would take the time to greet fans and sign flags, hats, tickets, etc. I ran into a lot of players this way including Fuyrk, Stewart Cink, Lucas Glover, Webb Simpson, Fredrick Jacobson, Aaron Baddeley, and others. I also spotted John Daly and Greg Norman going to the clubhouse. Players I wanted to see, but missed due to timing included Padraig Harrington, Steve Stricker, Bubba Watson, and Adam Scott. I did see Scott's caddie, Steve Williams (Tiger's former caddie), walking around the clubhouse. Congratulations to Keegan Bradley for winning this year's championship.

And while I'm not really a giant pro-golf fan, I thought this would be a fun way to spend a day outside and check it out. Other than the concessions, this was one class act, all the way through. Parking near the event was limited and very cost prohibitive so they had another option of parking at the Gwinnett Arena and taking a shuttle bus over...for free! I chose to do the shuttle thing and took it to the AAC where there was a long line of people waiting to get inside. Luckily, the line moved fairly quickly and I was soon inside. The nicely air-conditioned PGA shop was really cool with a gigantic variety of hats, shirts, coats, bags, shorts, pants, cups, umbrellas and a thousand other things with the AAC/PGA logos on it. You could probably buy enough items to fill your wardrobe for a year, decorate your house and office with nothing but golf crap, and even dress your kids and pets like little golfers...if that's the sorta' thing you're into. The weather was high 90s with a terribly unforgiving sun. But there was plenty of shade to be had and several misting booths to keep you cool, along with water vendors and concession stands every other hole or so. When the time came to break for lunch, I went to the concessions stand near holes 15/16 and picked up a pulled pork sandwich, a bag of chips and a Gatorade...for $14. Wow. I think the food at Turner Field is less than this...and oh, so much better. I tried eating the pulled-pork sandwich and it had been sitting under the heat lamp for so long that it was like eating a pile of jerky on a bun. Not cool...and so not worth $14. Other than the sub-par lunch, everything else was outstanding. We were able to get really close to the action on any of the holes we wanted to watch. The course has built a lot of space for galleries to spread out and watch without being overly crowded (despite there being a ton of people). We actually go very close enough to several of the pro golfers to be able to hear them talking to their caddies. We also saw several of them signing autographs for the kids and fans, making it a really cool experience.
