I LOVE going to Cactus Salon in Stony Brook! From the moment I walk in the door, I am greeted by Kerry at the front desk, with a big smile! I may have to wait a few minutes for Dawn, my stylist who I have been seeing for going on 15 years now!. It's hard in this world to make and keep those kind of relationships, but I would not go anywhere else! I Get so many compliments on my hair - Dawn not only only cuts, colors and hi-lights my hair, but she also does a wonderful Keratin treatment twice a year which makes it so much easier to style and dry my thick, curly hair!. Even the shampoo girls are wonderful, I always get a quick neck and shoulder massage while I am getting my hair washed!. Five stars all around!!!!. read more

On April 12 my granddaughter went to this salon, Cactus Salon In Stony Brook, and had Gabby as her stylist. She requested a color with pictures and was told yes it could be done. Instead, she left with a garish clown orange color, crying and upset. Numerous employees lied and told her she looked beautiful!! Look at the pictures and see if she got anything near the color she was promised?! Is that color beautiful? You decide. I had to call back and demand that she be brought back in the next day and her hair fixed by Gabby. When we got there at first, Gabby was super pleasant and helpful, but after one application of color, it still wasn't nearly nice enough, it was still patchy orange in spots. I told her she needed a second application and Gabby was not thrilled. There was another stylist named Mia who chimed in and tried to get us to leave after one application and go to a beauty store and get shampoo with color in it! "With all due respect" Gabby said! You know those are fighting words! I advised her that her client wasn't happy and she had let her client leave with clown red hair. Gabby did not want to do the second application and told me that this was going to be the last application that she was going to do. I advised her that the client would get her hair repaired. Anyway, we came to an understanding and Gabby had 2 other girls who she said were in cosmetology school, do another application with the help of a wonderful stylist named Dawn, in picking the right color and other bits of advice. Gabby does not know how to dye red hair, this has happened to her before according to others in the salon. This was a horrible experience for my granddaughter and for myself in both the application of Hair dye, then letting her leave with a horrible hair color, and them not wanting to fix it. If I, an experienced woman with hair salons, had not been there to defend my 18-year-old at her first time getting her hair colored at a hair salon, she would've just been left with orange hair and left to her own devices to fix it. I've never had a bad haircut until I went to Cactus Salon. I bought a Groupon for a haircut, and I called to book my appointment. There was apparently a misunderstanding that the stylist that the receptionist told me would accept Groupons, apparently doesn't accept Groupon, so another stylist took me; and that doesn't really bother me, I just wanted anyone to cut my hair. I arrived 10 minutes early to my appointment, and they took me in late. All these are just minor inconveniences that display their quality of professionalism. My MAJOR concern was when my stylist literally gave me the worst front pieces that I have ever seen. She hastily cut my hair, blowdryed it, and scurried off into the back room. She didn't ask if I liked it or wanted to adjust anything, and I couldn't even say anything about it because by the time I put on my glasses, she was already gone. My curtain bangs are very uneven, and it quite honestly looks like I cut it myself with how amateur it looks. I literally waited in the salon for her to come back so that I could tip her. At that point, I didn't even want to bring up how she cut my hair  unevenly, in fear that she would only ruin it more. Just avoid this salon at all costs unless you can find the stylist that everyone raves about; but at that point, why should you spend your money at an establishment and basically gamble your chances of getting a decent cut. Very awkward experience. Worst of all, since she was rushing (most likely because the groupon was not worth it to her)- the blow dryer was too high resulting in me noticing my scalp look like it was peeling after when I got home. After looking over some of the other reviews I was a bit weary about coming here but I snagged a pretty good groupon deal for a gel manicure and a classic pedi. When you first walk in you can tell this is an upscale salon. The building is really nice- high ceilings, a beautiful counter, complimentary drinks and bagels. The staff at the counter were very sweet! They seemed kind and genuine. There is a separate room for the nail techs which I thought was nice considering I've been to other salons where they just throw them in the corner along with all the hustle and bustle of blow dryers and chemicals flying everywhere. The nail room has no music so it's nice to have a conversation and just RELAX! My nail tech was Marla and I swear I will never go to anyone else now!! I made an appointment for a Saturday morning at nine am and she was perfectly on time and took me at 9 on the dot! We had the best conversation ever and I felt like I knew her for years. She went into such detail with both my pedi and mani and just did an amazing job on the color. The polish I picked for my toes happened to be a little thick but she took care of it and then put it aside to order more instead of putting it back on the shelf. Both my toes and fingers came out completely flawless and I love that you keep all the tools they use on you. I promise I will not be going anywhere else now!! *I can offer a tip to bring your own nail polish considering their selection isn't huge* To top it all off since this was my first time coming here I received a gift bag with tons of amazing deals!! 50% off, 25% off, $25 gift card and more!! Today I left this salon with wet, uncombed hair, die marks around my ears, cheeks and forehead - and to top off the crazy look - a piece of plastic tucked into the back of my sweater, over which a damp towel was draped like a bad version of a bat woman cape. For this I paid $185.00 plus a $40.00 tip. This exit happened because I was 20 minutes late and my stylist and I decided to forgo the previously scheduled cut and blow dry & just go with the coloring today to make up the time, since she was fully booked. Apparently I also needed to be "punished" by being forced to leave the place looking like an escaped lunatic. The folks at the reception desk saw what I looked like, (plastic bib, die marked face, un-combed wet hair, towel cape, etc..) and just took my money - not even bothering to offer me a comb - much less asking how things went today. I called the manager (Diana) afterwards and said I was unhappy with the treatment. She said sorry and offered me a free blow out. Not cool. I'm a loyal customer of Cactus Salon(s) for many years...but I won't be back. My advice to you? Save your money and your dignity - go somewhere else. read more

I went here 6 days ago for a full facial. The facial was great at first and I was even thinking about when I could come back for my next one during the process, until she started the extractions. She pushed down on my face so hard to pop pimples that weren't even visible that 6 days later, I have multiple marks on my face face from where she popped them. She originally told me that the redness would go away in 10 minutes, but had I known that these red cuts were going to be marked on my face for 6 days & counting, I would not have gone to her. Something that was supposed to be relaxing resulted in me walking around with cuts all over my face. Not to mention, the process was painful!!!!! read more

I wanted to try a new salon, since I moved to Long Island and decided to give Cactus Salon in Dix Hills a try...and found a Groupon offer, which I purchased and called to confirm whether they honor it. Made my appt. for a Sunday...and get a call that very Sunday morning letting me know that my stylist was unavailable since she was under the weather, and if I could come in earlier. Within 20 min. Long story short, I kept my Appt., met with that stylist, who was feeling great (they lied). And basically got a 5-10 min cut/wash/blow...nothing special, quick and rushed out of there. I'm glad I used a Groupon...and firmly believe that once they know you have a Groupon, they don't want to spend much time. Well, they lost a customer (and several referrals)...not impressed with that level of service. Don't bother going here. read more

I unfortunately had an extremely horrible experience at the Stony Brook location. I was scheduled for a balayage and I requested some blonde blended in throughout the ends and framing my face. This is not what I received and that's not even actually the worst part, but I will get to that in a moment. The colorist used foils for the balayage and they were in for ten minutes. My hair is super thin/fine, and I have not colored it in over 5 years. I now have a full head of highlights with three chunky blonde stripes in the front. They are not blended at all and are to my roots. Now the worst part- as I mentioned, my hair is super thin and fine and was obviously weakened after being bleached. The woman who brushed my hair after the shampoo broke so much hair off as she was brushing so aggressively. I think most people, especially someone who works at a salon and literally brushes hair as their job, know to brush starting at the bottom but she didn't, she started at the top and just wacked away at it. I wish I had spoken up and asked to brush it myself. If nothing else, at least I have learned a lesson to research the hair colorist before making any appointments in the future and to speak up when I feel something is not right. read more

Worst nail experience ever. I went in with a manicure because I had received a Groupon as a gift. The woman was nice, but the manicure was awful. Not only did the nails start peeling ON my drive home from there, but they also hurt. The peeling got so bad I took a bottle of nail polish remover and took the polish off. The attached photo shows what my nails looked like. So thin in some spots that my nails look red. So upset..$100 down the drain. Went in for routine highlight touch up and glaze and came out with more orange and brass then I went in. Vame back today to fix up and it's worse than the 1st time now I'm spending money on product to dye my hair very dark after having highlights for over a year. The girl was very nice but I don't know what happened and I never leave bad reviews but I'm going away this weekend and had a 100 things to do and now have to spend the rest of my day trying to fix my hair. What an amazing job she did! I was a little nervous walking in based on the reviews and the super-posh vibe in the salon. I had read all the comments about unfriendly stylists and rude reception and I must say, I experienced none of this. Going with my two daughters, my youngest only 3, some of the reviews led me to believe this was going to be a rushed, rude and regretfully stressful experience. It was the exact opposite. I do my hair myself and have been for as long as I can remember, I go to a salon on a rare occasion, but only your smaller ethnic salons. Was I offered tea and crumpets? No, but I have eyes and hands, there were bagels and coffee available. If I bring my car to Mercedes no one brings me coffee there either. This is a busy salon, not a Starbucks. Did I wait, yes? But honestly I had never been to a salon and not spent the day there while my stylist multi tasked between my hair and someone else's, so I was fine with the wait and Alana, my stylist was very apologetic. Now on to the artistry that this young girl did. She was super friendly, very warm, very receptive to my ideas and also didn't hesitate to educate me on things I didn't know about my hair, the lightening process(first time) and even my two daughters hair type (wavy curl). Alana knows herher craft well and she has a serious desire to continue to learn, as she asked me questions about products I use, techniques I have seen in the more ethnic salons, etc. She did an amazing job, I absolutely love the plumish red caramel baylage that she gave me. My hair is healthy, soft, the cut was just right and there is so much dimension and volume to the color. I couldn't be happier. I did have a groupon, because I was bored with what I was capable of doing to my hair, but I had been in salons before and left very unhappy. Not once did I feel as if I was getting a "groupon treatment." She took her time and really showed how skilled she was, which I appreciate, because she will now see me as a regular client. I'll never do my own hair again. She even put a braid in my youngest daughter's hair, which made her day and Christine topped her off with some glitter. The staff was amazing, reception had my youngest daughter sitting up there with them for a while, my oldest daughter got a cut and a blowout too. The atmosphere was very warm and inviting, I really can't understand some of the negative things that have been said. If you had a bad experience, maybe give them another try and be logical in your expectations. If you're on the fence and don't easily trust people with your hair like me. . . I leave you with this, I have very long, very thick mixed ethnicity hair. It is not easy to tame and it changes texture during each phase of the washing/drying/ straightening process. . .you're in good hands, go. read more

Found a haircut n blow dry for $27 so bought it and got scheduled with Bonnie. Love that they open at 9 am because I'm an early bird. Booked a 9:30 on a Sunday - great greeting by the front office staff. Nice and clean salon with easy access in and out of building-keep an eye out for the stop sign! ;-) Got a great shampoo and conditioning treatment before Bonnie took over. My friend and I found a Groupon for a deep conditioning, cut and blow dry. We both liked our hair cuts for the most part but neither of us liked the way she blow dried our hair. I have very thick but straight hair and it felt a bit damp in the back near my scalp. I was looking for a new spot close to campus so I wouldn't have to keep heading home for it but I guess I'll just keep looking. I went here for my haircut.Cecilla was my hair stylist.She was in so hurry.She wash,cut and blow dry my hair in 30min.I told her that I want curls at the end of my hair while blow dry but she didn't listen to me and just blow dry straight. I really don't like to leave even mediocre reviews, much less negative ones, but this is serving as a warning to anyone in need of salon services in the Three Village area. Go anywhere else because it is unlikely that you could have an overall worse experience at another salon. One star for a friendly salon assistant (unfortunately she was not the one who washed my hair) and one of the young women at the front desk (didn't get a single person's name) who ended up not charging me as I left the salon with a mop of sopping hair. I've been to many salons over the years and I've never witnessed such poor communication with a customer. The entire staff was rude, dismissive and unhelpful. In any service industry, this is unacceptable. In what is supposed to be an upscale-esque salon (based solely on their prices) it's quite surprising that they have any positive reviews on Yelp, or any customer base at all. In all fairness, I called on a Sunday morning, two days before Christmas, asking for an "emergency blowout" as my holiday plans had changed last minute and I wanted to look my best. The person who answered the phone sounded annoyed by this, but said she would see if they could find the time. I was thankful that they were able to fit me in and expressed that, but when I asked for more specifics of the salon location, the only info she could give me was "the shopping center next to Duane Reade." The same young woman who had answered the phone told me "go back and get washed." Didn't walk me back, didn't tell me what sink, didn't tell me who would be washing my hair or styling it. In the back area, the woman who eventually shampooed my hair came up to me and said "sit on the bench for like ten minutes, I'm not ready for you." So I awkwardly found the bench and sat there ( for about 15 minutes) while the women in the back gossiped (about some rather sensitive issues). When the assistant finally got around to washing my hair (again, never got a single name and they never asked mine either) she asked if I was there for a conditioning treatment. I explained that I had just had one at my home salon last week and was just there for a blow out for a holiday event. Before I could tell her that I had bayalage and needed a color safe shampoo she was already wetting my hair and lathering it up. To her credit, she did ask twice if the water was okay, which it was. After a (rather mediocre, at best) shampoo, she simply said "you have to sit for five minutes with the conditioner." I was a bit baffled (again, did not request a conditioning treatment) but thought maybe it was a courtesy if my stylist was running a few minutes late. I sat for quite some time before she came back to rinse me out, then she practically barked at me to stand up so she could comb out my hair (I have very long hair but I've never been told to stand up to comb it out). I don't mind standing at all, and both the assistant and I are not very tall which may have been the reason, but please, please be more polite to your customers. I am usually pretty understanding, but this entire experience was so obnoxious it was disheartening that such women work in a service industry on a daily basis. She then told me that my stylist (again, no name) was running late, gave my very long hair a very small and already damp towel and told me I could either wait for the stylist at a sink or at a dryer. Since there were no sinks left after I stood up to have my hair combed, I went and sat by a dryer. After about 5 minutes, the bottom of my long hair was soaking through my clothes, down to my bra. After about 10 minutes, my hair (especially on the top and sides of my head) began to partially dry, and frizz, as I was sitting near other people using the dryers with no styling products on my hair. At the 20 minute mark of sitting in the dryer chair, I decided it was time to go. It was close to an hour past my appointment time and I had zero information as to when someone was going to do the blowout. Bottom of my hair still dripping, I told the women at the front desk that I was going to have to leave and just wanted to pay for the shampoo. They told me I had a conditioning treatment (apparently I didn't just sit with the conditioner), and I expressed that although I had not booked that service I was willing to pay but needed 1) to leave and 2) another towel to wring out my hair. I figured asking for some anti-frizz stuff would be asking too much of this place at this point So they looked up what I had booked, each told woman telling me a different reason I had not been helped, (one said the person before me had curly hair, the other said she didn't know I had arrived) but neither apologized. However, they did not charge. I appreciate that, but not my wasted time, not the lack of service and certainly not having to go back to my parent's house not only without the blowout, but with sopping hair and no time to fix my hair myself. read more

So I got a groupon - yeah I'm that girl with the damn groupon. I was thinking this was going to be a cheap sloppy and rushed job but boy was I wrong. Except for the quick part. It was actually one of my better experiences with salons. I went in wanting a baylayage for my dyed black hair and a blowout. I sort of threw my trust into Christina (my stylist) who btw had the most gorgeous natural red hair. So jealous. Anyway she knew the exact color that would blend my natural roots with my dyed black hair on the bottom. I was in and out in an hour and a half and couldn't have been more pleased with the results. She is a senior stylist there. She did an amazing job with my hair.I felt like she knew what would look great on me with my complexion. Had a wonderful experience today at this salon/spa. It began with a fantastic, mood elevating massage by Jay. We discussed some physical issues I have had, such as a recent knee surgery, and then he proceeded to give one of the best massages I've ever had, and there have been many all over the world! He is incredibly professional, skillful, and I immediately felt at ease. Highly recommended ;) I then had a facial and clinical peel by Janelle. She was equally as professional, explaining skin care and my options. She gave a really thorough, relaxing facial, and was a funny, warm person. I was greeted at the front desk, with warmth, and congeniality. I believe the person who helped me was Danielle, and she was very pleasant as well. Th only reason I didn't give five stars is I felt the massage room was a bit chilly, and maybe a tad spartan, but everyone has their own unique taste. Overall, I can't wait to return. I can't believe the low stars at this salon. This review is coming from someone who actually had a very bad experience there a long time ago. (2013) Communication is key when working with someone who is going to color your hair. One of the colorist and I did not see eye to eye on the color I received. I spoke with her and the front desk and I wasn't thrilled with her redoing it since she thought it looked good and i didn't. I'm not going to put her name in this review because I don't want her to be beat up over this or lose any clients because I think she is talented just not for me. I left feeling terrible and went back in the next day. This is where Maria comes in and is why I even added that portion to my review. When she over heard I was unhappy, the manager wasn't there. I wasn't getting my point across and was ready to walk out and never come back and then my angel saved me. She stepped in : sat me down and said don't worry this is going to be fixed and your going to walk out of here feeling wonderful. She showed me pictures and said tell me exactly what you want. You paid a lot of money for your hair you will leave here happy! I did! The manager came in as I was getting it changed. She made me feel really comfortable with the entire process. They really went above and beyond to make sure I was happy they gave me a free deep conditioning and a free cut and fixed it for free .... Did I mention I was getting married the next week??? Well I had perfect hair for my wedding and perfect hair for the past two years. In the past two years she has changed my hair to exactly whatever I ask her. If I want it darker - lighter whatever it is she does a great consolation and does exactly what I want. I have never found a foil bleed or anything! Maria isn't the only one there that is amazing. Krystal cuts my hair. You know how when you get your hair cut they style it and you can never get it to look that way ever Again? Well ... When Krystal cuts my hair I blow it out myself and it looks just like it did the day she cut it. She asks before she takes anything off and says how about this? And she also gives me a long consultation on what I want and what she thinks is good. She also recommends products ! I think that's wonderful because I can buy them right then and there. I don't have to go searching for them. I call Krystal and Maria my hair dream team. I know cactus is expensive but honestly : you get what you pay for. These girls are talented and are worth ever penny. Today I got a color, cut and keratin treatment I will update the review and let you know how I like it but Maria has never recommended anything that I haven't loved so I can't see me not liking this. My first time for a facial here. It was terrible. I don't think the little girl who did my facial had any knowledge or experience doing a facial. No scrub, no massage nothing. She just used words like chemical exfoliation, serum this that but was good for nothing! Just applied a bunch of cremes that's it. Honestly my face looks much better after I wash my face at home. This is the worst hair salon I ever been to . Rude . Unprofessional and very inexperienced hairstylist . For the prices they charge they should provide the correct service . Lemon tree is better than this place. From start to finish this place shouldn't be open. From the front desk to the high school atmosphere to the incompetent stylists . Don't waste your money.
