WHAT I ATE - VIRGINIA @ Cactus Bar & Grill Manassas, VA A facebook group had offered a tip where we stumbled on this "tacquiza", a Mexican buffet style taco party held Fridays at the Cactus Bar and Grill. Unlimited made-to-order tacos! Buffet is perhaps not the best description as is connotes trays of pre-made food. In fact, everything is made to order in front of you and you take your order and dress is up to your liking at the Salsa Bar which includes everything you need to your liking. Whether you prefer "Americano" style or Mexican style fixings. You have a choice of tacos that includes; Carnitas, Buche, Tripa, Camaron, Alambre, Bistec, Chorizo, Birria, Asada, Cueritos, Cochinita Piril, and Nopal con Queso (Cactus with Cheese). Service was quick and the waitstaff are friendly to describe the food items, and quick to take drink orders. My wife adored the Camaron (shrimp) tacos for the plump, tasty shrimp, and the rich, slow cooked Birria, and the very clean Tripa (Beef Intestime). I really enjoyed the Alambre (a mix of steak pastore, ham sausage and peppers) and the Chorizo. I tried the Cactus Paddle with Mexican cheese. It had a unique, tart pickled vegetable flavor, a kind of cross between green pepper, Okra and Japanese seaweed salad type of quality. Unique, and tasty, but not my kinda thing. The Tacquiza is held on Fridays after 4PM, and we found there is a Mexican Brunch buffet that is held on Sundays which we are looking forward to trying! My parents and I went there for dinner. Let me say upfront, everyone was very nice. So nice in fact, they asked us if everything was ok at least 10-12 times. One of the managers came over to check on us and offer menu ideas. Truly, everyone was very nice and welcoming. Decor was festive and cute though the music was a bit on the loud side. My dad got pozole. He loves that dish and loves it spicy. He remarked at the bland taste. My mom got chicken taquitos. She said they were fine, but lacked enough sour cream and there was no guacamole with it. I got Cancun Tacos. It was supposed to have this: Grilled shrimp flour tortilla tacos, baja style, topped with chipotle cole slaw, pico de gallo, guacamole and cheese, served with rice and beans. I just asked them to use corn tortillas, not flour. It took two people 4 conversations to get that clear. What I got was sautéed baby shrimp, iceberg lettuce in a thousand island type dressing and some watery salsa in cold corn tortillas. No cheese or guacamole. Overall, the food was all very bland and overpriced in my opinion. We wanted to try a new place and my parents love Mexican food. Usually I like to give a places a few tries before I give a fair review. This time I need you all to know how great this place is. Hubby and I went on a Sunday for the all you can eat Mexican buffet. Considering it was a buffet, everything was beyond my expectations. Starting off arrival, It looks at little busy but they were able to accommodate us fairly quickly. They had a live mariachi which I'm a sucker for. I thought at first maybe it would be too loud but they did rotate around the restaurant which made it more comfortable and took breaks. Moving on to the food. There was not a single thing that either of us had that we did not enjoy or scarf down. I started with the pozole which was probably my favorite. I like mine with salsa crema some chips cilantro and onion and they had all the fixings! Also have the chilaquiles which they had a station for. They also had tacos which I did not get around too but were made on spot which I thought was really cool. They had a large selection from menudo, so 3 different pastas, potato's, meatballs, eggs, rice, mole, corn (LOVED), different guisados, the list goes on. We tried to have a little of everything but it was more than I could handle. They had a dessert station too. From flan, chocolate fountain, build your on chips (if your Mexican you know) arroz con leche (AMAZING) and so much more. Drinks were extra but we went for it anyways, unlimited soda and I had horchata. Mexican horchata is usually a hit or miss but this was a HIT!! The service lacked a bit. He definitely forgot about us for a bit but the manager came around checking on anyways and noticed. After that he didn't forget about us again and that was appreciated. We can not wait to go back. We've been telling all of friends and family. Saturday is Central American food, can't wait to see what they have!! My husband and I just got back from Guanajuato, Mexico and were craving authentic Chilaquiles and Cactus Grill came highly recommended by some friends in Manassas. IT WAS EXTRAORDINARY! My husband had the Chilaquiles Rojos and I had the Chilaquiles con Mole (the owner is from Oaxaca and makes the mole herself) and it was out of this world. We even had the Cafe de Olla (Mexican coffee with cinnamon). Manny, our waiter, was so kind and knowledgeable and told us all about the heritage of the owners and guided us through the vast menu of authentic Mexican food - so many delicious dishes. I had the chilaquiles and they were decent a little bit on the salty side if you are on a diet don't say I didn't warn you. The chips were pretty crunchy and the eggs were a little bit too much on the cooked side, but it's hard for them to understand over easy, can't take away from that. Prices decent for chillaquiles but everything else on the menu seemed a little on the proud side. Interior is pretty clean, they pretty much have the ladies cleaning the tables when there is not much to do. The only take away is it's almost like you're eating in a club, music in the 75 decibel mark it seems. Hard to take a order when they can't hear you and I was already talking loud. Service is ok. With Groupon you can get $15 taken off if you catch a discount or you buy it for $8 if timed right so that's about half price. It's worth a try maybe a little too harsh with this review but then again trying to stay away from them and would like to hear myself eating sometimes. Parking is Apple and it's definitely worth a try here at least once. read more

It actually has pieces of strawberry floating in it, and makes the flavor 10x what you think it would be! We were visiting Manassas and did a 30 min research for Mexican food and chose cactus grill.. it wasn't the best experience though. Could have chosen some other restaurant in my opinion . Firstly , the waitresss doesn't understand what we order because she doesn't know English . Unfortunately, we also don't know Spanish . She said chips comes with the salad that I ordered and I asked her to refill it because it took them forever to bring my beer . She said chips free and then they charged me for the refill. We were sitting there for 30 mins not getting our beer , so it is obvious that the owner should give free chips to make us wait . Secondly I ordered a salad , which said it had bean and veggies and they bring a regular taco which I didn't like that much . My son ordered a veggie enchilada and all he got was CHEEEEESE filled in. No veggies at all. We had to remove all cheese from it and stuff the veggies that came with veg taco . The best was veg taco . Very very good . The way i was treated here, in my opinion, is totally not oK.... All (NO) thanks to Maria, the manager... because of critical information SHE failed to inform when I called... Priorr to driving over 24 minutes to get to this restaurant. I seen that they offer a deal on Groupon, which I bought, and took my time out to call the resturant BEFORE placing an order to ask about how i should go about using the Groupon. Maria literally told me I could just order anything and the Groupon will count for it. In which sense especially because I have ADHD, I asked her in several different ways if I needed anything else and she told me literally no. Just make sure I have the Groupon when I come in. I get there only to be told that I know I have to buy at least one thing in addition to what was already made for the Groupon to count, I already ordered more than enough food for myself, as I got a big burrito and a taco. I'm 110 lbs & I don't really do left overs. She literally kept talking over me cutting me off and telling me that there's nothing she could do for me because that's just the rule, I calmly let her know I completely get that... I really did, but why did she not let me know that over the phone when I asked her several times what did I need to do to use my Groupon. I really wanted to leave the food right there and then but I literally just drove 24 minutes to this restaurant & im super hungry at this point I'm still calm... & She's now looking at me like I'm speaking some alien type of language to her. Didn't come up with any help. OH BTW NOT ONCE DID SHE APOLOGIZE TO ME FOR GIVING ME WRONG INFO OVER THE PHONE. She actually tried to make it seem like I was doing something wrong. Because, again, I literally called and asked her in several different ways if I needed to bring anything with me to use this coupon. Also, if you use an Apple Pay while checking out.. you have to scan a QR code .. it then takes you to Some app thing, which was new & just confusing when i asked how do i use this or if i needed to make an account she acted as if she didn't hear me so i just had to spend time figuring it out. She even forgot the drink that I paid for and when I came back to get it she again, did not even say anything to me she just told another employee to get it for me. The food: The Birria taco was actually OK, it did not come with any consumé to dip it in so that kind of defeats the purpose of birria. The burrito was supposed to come with guacamole and They forgot that too. The rice was just plain white rice too & very thinly sliced pieces of beef. Didn't really have much of that Spanish flavour to me. I do have another dine in Groupon which All sales are final on so i must use so I'll reluctantly eat in in the future and try a different item. read more

It was my first time dining here. I went on Mother's Day. They had Mother's Day ballon's all over the restaurant and small gift bags with fresh flowers and chocolates on every table that guests were allowed to take which I thought was really special. Most of the staff speaks Spanish but I did hear a few servers speaking English as well so don't feel like you can't dine here - just be patient and kind to the staff if there is a language barrier. For drinks I ordered my daughter an horchata and myself a tamarind juice. The juice was good but it wasn't fresh and the horchata was sweeter than what I'm used to and lacked the amount of spice that I'm used to as well but my daughter enjoyed it. They greet with chips and salsa - the salsa has great flavor it isn't spicy. I ordered their queso dip as well & that was delicious. I ordered the ground beef chimichanga and it was really great except there was refried beans inside the chimichanga which I wish would've been listed in the description on the menu because I would've asked for them to be removed from the burrito as refried beans and rice are served on the side. The way the chimichanga is shown in the photo is not how it is served I added left over queso on top of it. My daughter ordered chicken quesadillas and the chicken was insanely dry. I don't recommend that entree she barely ate them. The server was as very kind and attentive as well as the other staff members I had multiple people approaching asking me if I needed anything. suddenly after my last review there's a new sign up saying prices have been raised on Togo salsas. It's about time to find a new taco spot. 4 ingredient salsa that probably cost the restaurant $10 to make around a gallon is now $8 for a half filled baby cup. Wow.... Just wow.... Food maybe great but at this point they're just pushing customers out the door. Absolutely floored. Not to mention the attitude that is now present when requesting salsa to go. Hope yall like dry tacos cause unless youre willing to pay almost $100 for your tacos and salsa good luck. I'm sure this will result in the place closing just like the rest of the shopping center. We've been waiting for this place to open and finally got a chance to go! They did not disappoint. This is where the Baja Fresh used to be in the shopping and seems much bigger. You can sit in or order out at the counter. It's very colorful and the servers were kind and attentive. The manager was walking around as well and we got to talk a bit about their opening. He said everything is fresh and they don't even use salt in their food (questionable but I'll let it slide). They have a decent size menu with some pretty good prices as well. As with many Tex mex places, they start you off with some chips and salsa. I ordered the Barbacoa enchiladas which were delicious. But I will say it tasted EXACTLY like a pizza from Chuck E. Cheese (not in a bad way). I really enjoyed it! Didn't see/taste enchilada sauce but lots of cheese was on it. I also tried some of the steak taco and it was delicious. The steak was cooked and seasoned well. They currently don't have their liquor license so no margs just yet, but we'll definitely be back and hopefully trying so margs next time! read more

There was no spice, not very cheesy, kind of lackluster. It was a sad queso. Our tacos came out like 2 minutes after, and I had to remind the waitress about our drinks lol. The birria tacos sucked, and I'm sorry to say that. :( I opened two of mine, and there was barely any meat, mostly the fat of the meat. I had to take that out cause I do not like fatty pieces of meat. The dip was very bland, the tacos were nothing special, just an over all bland experience. The waitress was kind of bugging too, her service wasn't the best, I'm sorry but it's the truth. I cant stand when I get a waiter who's dry, it makes me not excited to eat there.
