We eventually asked someone and they said they would help us in a moment when they finished arranging some chairs. - the rest of the evening was great. I love the menu. Usually small plates and tapas are at Spanish places. But as someone who loves food, and trying different things, I love the idea of small plates so I can try as many things as possible. I also LOVE the Caesar creations they have. They are basically mini meals! I had the mac and cheese - always a good option. I tried the lamb burger - great, but not the best lamb burger I had I had the traditional Caesar with the cheeseburger slider - the Caesar was delicious, and the burger was perfect I also had the Caesar with the mozzarella balls - this was my favourite. those cheese balls were crunchy on the outside and so gooey on the inside. Unfortunately, this rather large restaurant had very few people in it when we showed up, which is…read moreoften a bad sign, but it was a bit early for dinner, and way late for a lunch, and it looks like a good family restaurant, so we decided to give it a chance. We entered and were almost immediately greeted by a host, who seated us us near the north side dining area, in full view of a large bay of windows facing the traffic artery of Walker road. Our waiter arrived quickly, asked us if we wanted drinks, and then gave us a rundown of the specials, which I already knew since they were handily scrawled on a easel-style chalkboard, just inside the entrance. I asked what Beers they had, and she knew the on-taps and varieties. We obviously needed some time, and she sensed that, offering to bring us some bread while we decide, and so we began to peruse the menu choices, of which their many. I zeroed in on a House Specialty Half-Rack of Ribs, which is actually quite difficult to get right for me, since I've eaten quite a few ribs in my day. Others had Veal Parmigiana and Stuffed Chicken with Pasta. Prices are reasonable, but this is not a fast food joint, and they are charging what they should be for the dishes. Note: The Stuffed Chicken came with TWO Chicken breasts. We drank our drinks and waited a fair while, I can imagine the kitchen is not expecting many early diners. The decorum is not great, and the fact that they have a full bar on the other end portends of conflicted interests behind the scenes, but I hold out hope for the food. It arrives, all at ounce, three rather large plates, each with a sizable amount of food. My Half-Rack looks good, and I have a nice portion each of mashed potatoes and beans to go with them. Others are mildly impressed with their portions and presentation, and both like to eat plenty and often. The Ribs were moist, probably boiled, but seasoned well and though I've had much better meat, the way they were cooked was good. I would only hope for more higher quality ribs. The side dishes were also seasoned very well, both with what we all in the party seemed to agree was a European influence, perhaps Hungarian. The Stuffed Chicken was "impressive enough" and when I was offered some I felt the flavours were balanced well, and we all thought the portions were generous for that dish. The Veal Parmigiana was very good when I tried it, and our other friend thouhgt "it's probably better than my mothers, and I love hers A LOT!" So, needless to say this is a good restaurant. It's not the best in the world, but it would probably be a lot better if they had a few more customers. Cheers!

Dear Owners, What a mixed bag of feelings I had when I…read moredined at your establishment tonight! First was WOW! What a cute place! Do we really have a "wine bar" with this kind of atmosphere downriver? I saw a picture of your establishment on a friend's Facebook page a while back, she told me about you and the pictures didn't lie, it is as cute, quaint and cozy as I had expected. I was fortunate enough to have a restaurant.com certificate so I could check you out! We were seated in a little alcove that felt cozy and private. We ordered a bottle of white wine. Our waitress delivered two glasses. She explained to us that she wanted to keep our bottle under refrigeration so it wouldn't get warm. As a pretty serious wine drinker, this isn't the way it's done. We want the excitement when our bottle arrives and the special feeling when the wine is opened for us. Teach your staff how to properly serve a wine, or don't call yourself a "wine bar." We asked for our bottle, and nursed it through the food. It did get warm, if you invest in those stainless steel or clay coolers your staff won't have to worry! Your waitress made a little mistake; she delivered the bread for us to another table even though we were next. She looked us in the eye and apologized. She is a keeper; you don't often find folks like that - except Downriver - the in your face honest type. This made a negative into a positive. And the bread! Seriously, home made, with lots of warm crispy outside and soft insides and a sauce with a little extra zing on the finish! YUM! My little secret is that I have been gluten-free recently, not tonight, not with that bread on the table! The salads were gorgeous - homemade dressing, mixed greens and lovely. I can't help but wonder if a little cracked pepper offered for my salad would have added another nice flair? I like this too. It isn't an expensive thing to do and gives you that extra-special feel. Next was the hard part we waited a long time for our food. We were getting frustrated. Apparently, tonight was the first night of a new menu. My husband liked his Chicken Saltimbocca, but my swordfish was a bit over-cooked. My polenta was kind of watery. What did you do? Both proprietors came to the table, looked us in the eye and apologized. You shook our hands. You let me make suggestions and took me seriously. You are "salt of the earth" people and you WILL succeed. Our meals were comped due to the extenuating circumstances. This is what I like about Downriver; the no-nonsense approach of its people. I have seen enough of your restaurant that I will recommend it, I will be back, and I will not be disappointed! I will also write another review, and I know it will be a star or two better. Folks will give your cute place a chance, and they won't be sorry! Sincerely, Lisa L.

We were shown to a table and asked if we preferred a booth, which I did, so they cleaned off the one that recently became available. This space has a family style feel to it. Everything on the menu looked so good, it was hard to choose, so I ended up getting the Polish Trio as an appetizer. They have it as an entree but it's the same food with a choice of salad. The trio included potato pancakes, 2 different pierogies (potato and sweet cheese) and Polish sausage. They have two types of sausage and allow you to choose which one you prefer. Everything tasted excellent! It brought back memories of being in Poland - a great experience. Our server was very nice and walked my mom through their gluten free options as well. I appreciated the amount of time she took with her. There are only two Polish restaurants remaining in Hamtramck so if you like the food, come out and support them. We will be back!
