My visit to this store was a success. I was in a hurry and knew exactly what i was looking for. When I thought it was going to turn into a disaster because i couldnt find the size and color i was seeking out, an asscociate from the store approached me and seeing i was in a hurry, he quickly told me that he was going to look in the back, he was super fast and when i went to checkout there was no wait. Where to start? Much like Gander Mountain or Wolf Lodge but you can buy all season stuff here year around. I was here in November but they still had loads of fishing gear. It is two stories high with everything you can imagine. This is a great place for kids of all ages. There were many children in awed of the animal display in the middle of the store. I came here to try on cloths I saw in a catalog that came to my house from the previous renter. Good thing I did because some worked, some didn't. Why is it just "A-OK"? All of the cloths at the store were full priced. When I went home that night and went on-line to send my mom the items I liked for Christmas, ALL the items I liked were at LEAST HALF PRICE on their on-line store. WHAT? That is ridiculous. This is the story of how my father tried to kill me. Not on purpose. And okay, maybe "kill" is a little dramatic. He got me one of those puffy vest things from Cabela's for Christmas. A nice one. But it was too big and I had to exchange it for a smaller size. But after walking around with it in my hand (it wasn't in a bag) for an hour, searching for a smaller size, my eyes got all itchy and red. I didn't know why, but then noticed that the vest was stuffed with down and allergic to down am I. Told you I was being dramatic. Ok, so I am not swell-up and die allergic, just itch and be uncomfortable allergic. But either way, I eventually exchanged the vest for a cool iPhone case that has a battery built in. But that's a spoiler and I didn't warn you about it. Sorry. So now my actual review is about to begin, and you can call it a Prequel, since you already know what I did with the vest at this point. So I drove out to Hammond because it was semi-on the way home from my BFF's house who lives in Kankakee. (County. Not the city. He lives in Manteno, but nobody knows where that is except Courtney.) Anywhoo, this was my very first visit to a Cabela's and it was a little bit overwhelming and a little bit awesome. I'm about as not-outdoorsy as you can get, so even if I liked the place, this would probably not be a place I'd make a return trip to. Unfortunately, organized and helpful are not words I'd use to describe most of the people or the store. Some stores' clothing departments are organized by brand, others by type of clothing. I couldn't tell what this one was. Everything was next to everything else with no apparent distinction except to divide them by sexes and apparently "camouflaged" and "non-camouflaged." I don't require much camo-gear to walk through the mean streets of Elmhurst, so I skipped that area. Where the heck are all the employees? I seriously walked around for 15 minutes before seeing a single one. I did walk through the fishing and hunting and other outdoor-types-of-sections, but as previously mentioned, I'm not the target audience. I'm more of the Target audience, if you understand what I did there. It took me about a half hour to locate the puffy vests I was looking for, and sadly, the size I wanted was not in stock. More searching and I came to the sole employee that seemed to be working the entire clothing department, and clearly didn't want to be. I asked Sharon W. for help, but she outright refused to check and see if they had it at another store for me, despite standing right next to a computer. She told me I should return the vest, get a store credit and order a different one online, which seemed a bit extreme since all I wanted was an even exchange to begin with. Why the hell would I do all that? Don't they have an inventory management system connected to all the stores? And also, even if I did want to go to all that trouble, this damn vest was purchased in another state where they don't have sales tax on clothing so I would have to pay the tax just to get the item I already had in my itchy, red hand. So my choices were dwindling, and I was really not looking forward to standing in the line of 50 people at the customer service desk who were all trying to return Christmas presents, just to be told that my item could only be ordered online with Sharon's asinine method, screwing me out of the sales tax. That's when Max entered my life. And even tho he worked in the fishing department, he was willing to check another store through the computer and find that they did, indeed, have what I wanted elsewhere. So overall, the store was disorganized. Customer service was lacking, tho that could be an individual case, since Max really raised the bar after dealing with Sharon. And they needed more staff to deal with all the added returns. Sidenote: they didn't even have a manager working the floor when I got there. I tried to call them to commend Max's helpfulness and got a message stating they weren't in that day. read more

Came here to check out some stuff for my Shenandoah Valley hike in April. Gotta say, they've got A LOT of stuff here! I was originally looking for a bigger hiking pack for my pup... they didn't have it in stock, but I was told I can order online and pick up here. They even said if you want to order a few different sizes to see if they fit, that'd be ok too. I was told that you can bring your pup to try on life vests and other doggy gear, but they must stay in the customer service area while you shop. I checked out the kennel area, they're the standard plastic kennels you can buy at pet stores, nothing extravagant. They've also got different sizes to accommodate your furry friend. Holy guns... so many. A good portion of the up stairs is DEDICATED to rifles and shot guns, if you do any hunting or sport shooting you'd be in heaven. They've got a good archery selection too. I stuck to the hiking and outdoor section though. Cabela's has an OK selection of that. Plenty of tents and sleeping bags, water purification systems and even little porta-johns that kinda look like those toddler training toilets. For you 'I wanna be clean and fresh' hikers, they carry biodegradable shampoo and soaps that are super environmentally friendly. Also - mosquito rolls that you burn... NOT so environmentally friendly. Camel-baks, canteens, dry sacks, hand warmers... all there. Day hike packs, mini packs, overnight hike packs and even Extended Hike packs, they got 'em! The 'Extended Hike' packs run about $200 which isn't too bad really I think they were 44 gal capacity. Tent repair kits, stakes, bungee cord and heavy-duty outdoor scotch guard, mini sewing kits and patches, fire starters and fire putter outters too. I can list stuff for days... they've got EVERYTHING and if they don't have it there, they can get it for you. On to customer service - Spot on! very friendly and helpful. Even though they had rearranged some of the store recently they still knew where most of everything was. They even offered me a walk through of the kennel area which I gladly took. Not bad, it's just in the customer service area, where they handle all the returns and such... it's clean and well lit, I would not be worried about bringing my pup to stay there while I shopped around. The only little thing about this place I'm not fond of is the marked up prices... not to worry though, there's sales and clearances going on. I can dig that. SYOY read more

Fun place to shop ... tons of supplies for the outdoor set. If you have an RV, there are many items for supply and outfitting your rig. Fishing, boating, camping, hunting ... it is all here at this large facility. Huge showroom and a parking lot to match. Always stuff to do or show the kids also - including huge fish tanks and stuffed wildlife. Whether you actually need something or not, this is a neat place to stop and browse. read more

This review is primarily for their firearms and ammunition section. Overall the store is pretty amazing asthetically. They have tons of stuff all over the store to gawk at all day. Their gun library like most cabelas stores is somewhat overpriced on used guns. After all they have to pay the overhead on such a large store. New gun prices when on sale can be a good deal. The employees are hit or miss with regards to knowledge about firearms. Overall they don't know squat about surplus and antique firearms which are military issued. If they did then there wouldn't be m1903 rifles made up from a parts bin on a low serial number (unsafe to shoot) receiver for $ 1,100 However their customer service was great. I did buy a used rifle from them and took it to the range that evening once picked up. It was malfunctioning badly with the supplied magazine. I called the store the next morning and spoke to the manager. He told me to bring in the firearm and magazine and he would swap one off the shelf for me. If that did not solve the problem they would send it out to a smith. Obviously they can't check every used gun for full functionality so it was no fault of theirs. The new magazine worked flawlessly. I would buy a used gun with confidence again if they keep this up! read more

Then I had to explain how I work 12 hours a day, can't come another day and my boss let me off early to get there trying to help out and how they don't close for 5 more minutes and she wouldn't let me in. read more

Cabela's is an outdoorsmen's dream. When you have a waterfall covered in mounted, stuffed North American wildlife, it get's you in a mindset similar to that of Fred Bear. This location is conveniently located off of the I-65/I-80 corridor, just south of Chicago. It's very easy to get to from the interstate is provides a great stop to, if anything, stretch the legs, take in some outdoor merchandise, and grab an Elk burger at the upstairs cafe grill for some driving-power protein. I like a lot of the apparel at Cabel's, it fits my taste and is also very functional sporting-wear. It is a little pricier than your average supply store, but they sell quality products that they stand behind. The camping and outdoor recreation departments are also fun to browse, they have everything in stock that you would need to survive a week long, Northwoods expedition. There is also a very expansive firearms and sporting gun department on the second level, for all new, used, and collectors pieces. This is a great destination right off the road for satisfying your outdoor cravings, getting a quick bite of some wild game for the road, or just stretching the legs. Worth the exit. read more

I really like this store. All the employees are very friendly and helpful. The store is huge and has 2 floors. Even on "black Friday" when there were over 600 people in the store at one time, it didn't seem crowded except that I heard the lines to check out were pretty long (I didn't buy anything that day). I came back the following Sunday to buy a couple things. The lines were short, and the checkout process was very quick. Hint: The day I was there I heard on the loudspeaker that if you "check in" on the Cabelas app (you might have to download it on your phone) that you save 10% on your entire order. The offer isn't good on some things like firearms but it sure made the ammo I was buying that was already on sale a GREAT deal! read more

Returning a garment that clearly had design flaws, I was treated by the "ladies" in customer service like a thief. The manager could not be bothered to look over the products and discuss the flaws. My clothing was replaced and I was told they would do it without charge "this time but not again'. I went in the shop to buy a boat which I did ... at Pro Bass Shop in Portage. As a successful business owner myself, I would never have treated anyone with such disregard and distrust. I took my business elsewhere and I am glad I did. Stopped at the store in Grandville looking for boots with flyer in hand asked the salesperson in the boot department for the specific boot advertised. Sales person appeared to be annoyed and wasn't very cordial at all. He picked out a box with boots but was a dffmerent more expensive boot than what we where inquiring about. He, the sales person offered no explanation as to why he wasn't showing the boot we were looking for.until I asked him. He then said the boot we wanted wasn't in stock, could have done a much better job, instead with his poor attitude the store loss two purchases. The store itself is really pretty good - big selection, clean shopping area, great decorations, nice wide isles, but wow is the firearm area a disaster! Want to see a gun? Want to pick up a gun you've already purchased? Have a question about something? Take a number and be prepared to wait- 30 minutes to an hour is not unusual. The people behind the counter are SLOW as snails, but that's an insult to snails. They've combined the job functions of the check out clerks, and the knowledgeable gun sales people, so you may get someone that has NO IDEA if you're looking for some advice. Worse, when someone checks out, it takes the knowledgeable sales person away from the counter. Here's a tip - let people that don't know anything about guns do the paperwork. Worse, the department is the poster child for inefficient customer service. Here's an example. Three people have their guns and are now completing the paperwork before they can leave, with three separate check out clerks. The purchases need to be checked by someone other than the checkout clerk to avoid fraud (ok makes sense). Does the department manager come out to check the paperwork? Oh no, that would be too efficient. Instead one of the other two clerks checking someone out, STOPS their work to check the paperwork for another transaction. Don't mind waiting while your checkout clerk is gone for 5 to 10 minutes? Good, because that's what you're going to get. Where's the department manager? Having a smoke? Grabbing lunch? Relaxing in the back trying to look busy? Could be all three, but they're no where to be found. I really understand no one wants to rushed when you're making a purchase like this - but come on - anyone can see the customer service process they have in place is NOT WORKING. Bass Pro Shop is 15 minutes away in Porter, and does not suffer from the same customer service problems. read more

This review is specifically for their phone availability. It amazes me that such well-known and large store could never pick up the phone. I have called numerous times and the phone just continuously rings. I called this morning and it literally rang about 30 times before someone picked up. I asked to be transferred to firearms and when transferred it kept ringing and went to voicemail. Incredibly frustrating. What can I say, this place was an absolute disappointment. If you're looking for any sort of customer service this is not the place for you to go. Having worked in retail for many years I know what customer service is , more importantly I know what good customer service is. I located two young sales associates in the middle of a private conversation and asked if they could help me. One looked at me and walked away, the other one asked what I needed help with. When I explained to her I was going camping on a cold winter weekend and needed lined warm pants she said that they had none. When I asked are there any other warm weather hiking pants I could wear she said no. She walked away and offered no further assistance. If I wasn't leaving the following day for my hiking trip I would've walked out the door and gone somewhere else. Unfortunately I had to search and find something that would work on my own without any assistance. I hated giving money to this store. The only positive note I will add is that my husband and I found some lined pants that worked great. (no thanks to the staff) Hey Cabela's! How about hiring some people who actually give a damn about your customers instead of teenagers to stand around and talk on the clock. Just a thought. read more

Okay. Sometimes you just have to put the family unit in the car and head off to a place that the biggest guy in the car or truck wants to go---period. And quit yer whining! So being that I order from them 2-3 times per month from the catalog and the website (a religious experience you see), and being that I use that Cabelas VISA card to pay for everything which gives me over $100.00 per month in free Cabelas money, I just had to go to the new store in Hammond when it opened. Dear Lord, I had to bow upon entering this massive, well designed, and Disney-esque shrine to my world....fishing, hunting, camping, barbequeing, grilling, ice skating, skiiing, oh I could go on. What flat out amazed me is how the family took to it. Now understand, I am a man surrounded by women. I and my "frank and beans" are all surrounded here on the homestead by girlie girl stuff, talk, and whatnot if you can appreciate my predicament. And I was tearful as I saw their new love for this most wonderful store. They actually bought Cabelas clothes and socks and some knick knacks here and there. Could have knocked me over with a piece of beef jerky when I saw them buying me things too. They were hooked. If you have kids, take them here for a nice treat. Great animals on display for educational purposes, great food in the back, very friendly people working here, and outstanding quality on all you can want if you are an outdoorsman. Forget Dick's and Northface---you want real quality keep you warm down to 50 below and it won't cost you $900.00 and make you look like a girl, this is the place. And no---their mens coats do not come in lavendar nor summer yellow. But they have many fishing lures that do. And that is just alright with me. Maybe if my colony of women ever threw me out, I will just go live at Cabela's. Hell, they'd never know I was living there, it would save them money on shipping me my stuff every month, and I could talk to the critters that wander in. I was in love with this store until recently. I am definitely in favor of them changing their policy back to the old one. I've purchased firearms from here before with no problem but now they have this 30 policy on firearms.... with me having a common name I am always put on delay and I would have assumed they know that unless I am an offender with a felony the FBI doesn't care that I'm delayed and they are not going to take their time to call and say that I'm good to go. According to Cabela's I cannot get my firearm until they receive the call. I had to do a 30 day application 4 times before being told that I could have just had it transferred after the waiting period to pick it up at another FFL. This has definitely deterred me from wanting to buy firearms from here. They have a great variety and an awesome bargain cave but this delay policy needs to change. Trust me, I understand about the craziness happening and they don't want to have a "bad conscious" about selling to someone that would be unstable and rampage on an establishment but come on. If you release a weapon under the ATF laws after the 5 day period the the government decides I shouldn't have it. Trust me they are coming to get the guns back. I've witnessed people being red flagged and the police coming to arrest a felon for attempting to buy a weapon. This policy only punished the people the abides by the law. I don't see criminals on a delay from a street dealer.... Alright I'm done Cabela's I hope that we can continue our relationship and you finally come around to lifting this policy. read more

This store is incredible. The selection is awesome and you could spend hours browsing. The gun library is a history lesson. My issue is a ridiculous one. I had shopped here on occasion and the service is ok. I decided to grow my hair out to make a donation to a charity that makes wigs for people who are sick and have lost their hair, in honor of a recently deceased friend. Once the hair got long I couldn't get any service at the gun counter. I could stand there as long as could be but would wait while the old timers helped other customers that walked up. I had to force the issue to get waited on. Interesting sociological experiment but that's not what I was looking for. I would be excited to shop another location but am finished with this one. read more

Awesome family outing or date - even have snack shop upstairs. Handicap friendly with elevator in back plus escalators. Lots of stock. Good sales. Clean bathrooms, excellent customer service. Bring a camera as its like a museum with all the "stuffed" (taxidermy) animals and you can take some really great photos. Plan to spend a couple of hours as its HUGE and worth the drive. read more

This place is huge. Very Bass Pro-esq if you have ever been to one of their locations. Any kind of fishing, hunting, outdoor gear you could ask for. They also have a "Gun Library" here where you can purchase or sell firearms. I would pretty impressed with this Cabela's store. read more

A great store to go to if you need anything for hunting or outdoors. The display of taxidermy in the center of the store it's pretty impressive. They have parts of the store where they actually focus on teaching people and young children about the ethics of hunting. Their selection of hunting supplies is plentiful. read more

On October 14, 2017, I went to check out through the Customer Service Desk instead of a register because of an issue with a points card. I had two paper coupons and a coupon via email, each stating $20 off a $100 purchase. Before today, I separated out my merchandise to equate to three separate transactions. This evening I had around $ 350 worth of merchandise. I was informed by the manager on duty, Kim, that the coupons were not valid with bargain cave items, which has never been the case in the past. The fine print on the coupon DOES NOT state that Bargain Cave items are not included. She tried to claim that a Bargain Cave item is considered a promotion. I asked her for proof of the policy since I have always used it previously with a mix of regular and bargain cave items. At that time, she stated she did not have to show or prove anything to me and proceeded to call the police because "She didn't have to deal with this." Needless to say, I will not be going to the Hammond, Indiana store again to be treated so poorly, when I am spending hundreds of dollars. read more
