The Costco San Juan tire department gives Caars as one of their suggestions for a wheel alignment (Costco will sell and install tires but doesn't offer wheel alignments). When asked, they said Caars would be a safe bet for a full service too. I needed a 90,000 mile service which is a major one, quite expensive. Evan gave me an estimate over the phone. When I went in I dealt with Vince who was lovely. Vince gave me a ride home in my car which I thought was clever because as he said, sometimes he can learn things about a car when he drives someone home before the service. Sure enough, he noticed a very subtle shimmy to the steering wheel when breaking at high speeds. Vince called me during the day and suggested I have the brakes changed, which I was somewhat expecting because it had been a long time since they were replaced. He picked me up when the service was done. I drove the car back and the shimmy was gone, they'd fixed it. When he wrote up the final invoice, it came out $40 above what I came up with when he added the brakes. He promptly corrected it. Overall my experience was great, and I'll have them service my car again in the future. read more

This review is LONG overdue. And bear with me, it's a bit lengthy! Back in 2008 CAAR'S was recommended to me by America's Tire, to do my tire rotation after replacing my tires on my then-1998 Lexus. They did it in a timely manner, and did a great job. I saw that the owner is an ASE certified master mechanic, which was comforting. In February 2009, if you recall, SoCal was hit with lots of rain. All of a sudden my car got the case of "Christine" and kept trying to start on its own...when I wasn't in it...and the key was with me, not in the ignition! I was naturally, completely freaked out. I texted my grease monkey friends back home, 6000 miles away, and one friend (a master mechanic) asked if it had been raining. When I confirmed it had, he said my starter fuse had a crack and needed to be replaced. I called a dealership & asked if they could just replace the part and of course they said they had to run a full assessment (and of course charge me up the yin-yang for that). I thought I had no choice but then decided to try CAAR'S. When I explained the situation (which Vince listened to without cutting me off), and asked if they could just replace the part, I was told Yes. Wow! But it was explained that if it wasn't the reason for my car's issue they would then have to do a complete assessment. Of course this was totally acceptable, and a given. Turns out it WAS the starter fuse. Talk about saving me time, worry and money. It got tiring disconnecting one battery port to avoid my car doing the "Christine" thing lol! I was so pleased with their service that I continued to bring my car back for regular maintenance (oil change, etc). Later I moved farther north and got a new car. Caars was a bit too far for me. But sometime last year-and-a-half my relatively new Chevy Equinox all of a sudden had some interior lights/displays and radio go blank on me. Like years before I asked my grease monkey friend 6000 miles away and he told me the battery had to be re-set. Like before I called the dealership and they said they had to run a full scan of the car and couldn't just do what I asked. I remembered CAAR'S and again called. And again I was told to bring it in. About a short 30 minutes later I was out the door. Vince even charged me less than his quoted price because it didn't take as long as he thought it would. Honest, more than capable, friendly and reliable service. I WISH I lived closer. I would only go to CAAR'S. If only they were open on Saturday's, I'd make the trek down and bring it there (I live in Costa Mesa - I know, not that far but...if only they were open on Saturday). In response to the 1 Star review from 3 months ago, I am a small stature Asian "mature agewise" retired lady veteran who moved from the East Coast to Southern California a year ago and know nothing about car other than stepping on the gas and brake to go where I need to go. Had used Caars for engine oil change. The price seemed fair and the shop even gave me a 10% discount on labor and parts for my age/veteran status/or both. I am writing because of my experience with Vince a couple weeks ago. I rear ended a recycle bin and broke my car's left tail lamp plastic cover. The shop in LA County where I was at the time replaced the cover and failed to make sure the light work. Found out by chance two days later when I returned here at Orange County that the tail light didn't work. I got to Caars a few minutes before it closed on the Friday before Christmas. Vince checked it quickly and told me to wait for a few minutes. I got in the shop and helped myself to my favorite drink, hot water. Yes, they have those Keurig kind of coffee but have never tried coffee in my close to 70 years age and don't need the caffeine. Before I know it, Vince gave me back my key and told me it's fixed. He didn't even charge me because he just needed to change the bulb. If that's not honesty and kindness, it must be the giving, joyful and loving spirit of Christmas. Vince, I salute you and greatly appreciate your integrity and the way you run your shop as everyone else had raved about it. I came in on Friday 7/17 to get an alignment. I've never been treated so well and honestly in my life. These guys are awesome and really down to earth. I got an alignment at another shop the day before and it was a nightmare. I ended up looking other shops and found this shop. I first found this place when the Costco tire center recommended I take my car in for an alignment. When CAARS did their diagnostic, they found my alignment was fine and only charged me a portion of the price we agreed upon for the service. This surprised and impressed me, as they could've easily just charged me the whole amount that I had already agreed to pay or lied about doing the re-aligning. A year later, when another car's check engine light came on, I was pretty stressed about taking my car in to a mechanic because I was worried about being taken to town. Luckily, I remembered CAARS' honesty concerning the alignment and decided to try them again. I have a check engine light diagnostic tool at home and looked up the code before going there so I would have an idea of what the problem might be. Thought it was going to cost me a boatload, but the guys there determined it was simply a worn seal on the gas cap and went and got me a new one (and did not even charge me extra for the cap as it was less than the cost of the diagnostic). What a relief! I've taken all my vehicles to CAARS ever since and have never been disappointed. CAARS makes its living by giving good, honest service at a fair price. The owner, Vince, and his employees are always polite and helpful. I've compared their service costs with other places, and while they are not the cheapest, they are not outrageously expensive either. In the long run, I feel it's better to pay a little more for peace of mind than go to a cheap place that will either do a poor job servicing your vehicle or make up for the cheap prices by scamming you at some point (or go to a dealership that'll charge you high prices and may still scam you anyhow). On a side note: I decided to write this review because I saw another reviewer complaining about CAARS "scamming" his mother-in-law into purchasing a new car battery. I had a similar experience regarding AAA battery and Vince recommending I replace it. I told him it was under warranty so I would try to deal with AAA to replace it first. Well, AAA's warranty is pretty much a joke. It's good for 3 years, after which there is a 3 year "limited discount period." My battery was just over 3 years by a couple months, so I figured I could at least get a good deal with the "limited discount." Turns out the discount is all of $10 or $20, and if you utilize it, your new battery would not be warrantied at all (something like that, I don't remember the full details). I said forget it, and took my car back to CAARS for a new AC Delco battery, which ended up costing me less than what AAA would've charged (even with their huge $10-$20 limited warranty discount). I am a member and big fan of AAA, but if you look up AAA battery complaints you'll find a lot of people have had problems with them. read more

I feel terrible for taking so long to post a review for this great business. I found Caars by reading reviews actually. I would like to inform anyone reading this, that they do live up to their reputation. The A/C in my car stopped working. In any other state in the middle of winter, this would not be an issue. Our 80 degree SoCal winter days can be a bit much and no A/C was torture. I called to get an appointment and they were booked up. I congratulated them and asked for the first available date I could drop my car off. The guy I talked to saw a hole in the schedule and said I could drop the car off and they would try to get to it later. They did and found a damaged hose as well as another issue with the steering. They kept the car another day and I got it back with the A/C running like new and a quote for the steering fix. The mechanic was nice and informative and the pricing was fair and reasonable. I am also happy to support a San Juan Capistrano business since we live here. I highly recommend Caars for all our your automotive maintenance needs.
