When you first arrive, you are subjected to a security search. I had to empty my pockets, and the security guard ran a magnetic wand through my entire body and shoes. It's a Federal building after all. I went on a Tuesday around 10 a.m. without an appointment since I was having an issue completing an online application. After about 30 minutes, I was able to get an appointment and plenty of information to get my application completed. Way better than the DMV.

I just made a quick trip to get "in person" help and arrived a half hour before they closed hoping they would be able to see me. Fortunately, the interior was pretty empty of social security recipients, so I was lucky that day. At the time, I was doing hospice care for my dad and wanted to report to them that he had a change of address living with me. Unfortunately, making a change of address turned out to be more complicated than expected. They also wanted me to declare being his social security payee which I didn't realize would be necessary. I was given a list of things that needed to be done before his change of address could even be considered. I have to agree with Geneva L.'s review about how stressful and emotional going to the social security office can be when dealing with a parent's last days on earth. It took some time, (mostly because I had to wait for the next available appointment opening), but I finally checked off the list of things they needed (including his personally signed doctor's diagnostic statement) to finally get my dad's change of address recorded. Unfortunately, my dad passed away before the appointment, and they couldn't do anything more to help me since his account was no longer accessible due to his death. I ended up leaving with tears in my eyes and not even a "sorry for your loss". The small parking lot sucks, but at least the security guards were nice.
Lucky me.

I happened to come on a Friday before a 3 day holiday, so perhaps it was busier. I came in just around 10:15 am and left close to 1:30 pm, so nearly 3 hours of waiting total. The service I needed to get done took literally only 5 minutes. The case worker said that usually the wait is closer to 1.5 hours on average, but he thought maybe people wanted to get things done before the holiday weekend. He also mentioned end of the month was also either a busier or less busier time (not sure if he misunderstood my question). There's plenty of parking. There are many people outside seeming to be just hanging around. When you enter there is a security guard. There are two kiosks where you select the service you need and you get a ticket. You sit down and wait for your number to be called. Make sure to keep your ticket. There are also a lot of no-shows. Once your number is called, if it is for station A, you have to wait at the "Stop" sign until a case worker comes out to accompany you to their office to get your service completed. I mention this because as soon as my number was called, at first I thought someone would come right out. I thought my number was skipped when the number after me had someone come out for them and walked them back. However, shortly after that, my case worker came out to walk me back. There are restrooms if needed. They do have what looks to be a play area for little kids. They do have masks if you need them. I would probably recommend wearing a mask here especially since everyone could be seated so close to each other. Overall, it was an experience that was as expected, aside from the slightly extra long wait time.

But then the most recent I waited 1.5 hours just to be seen for 5 minutes. It was a little frustrating. The place always smell so musty and crowded. There so many chairs but the building is old. I got seen and the answer I got was unsatisfied. But I guess it better that I got seen.

It was closed- gone. The contents were moved to another bank branch and then bounced to another. Then they closed those safe deposit boxes and deemed mine "abandoned". If you're one of those people who lived under the cloud of safe deposit boxes keeping your stuff guarded, wake up! Panic really set in when my bank told me mine was closed in 2020. They'd sent a postcard to an old office address from three moves earlier even though my bank has had my home address/email/phone number that were all unchanged. Tick, they did their jobs, NOT. Having had experience in Illinois with a misrouted dividend check, property considered "abandoned" is often sold after a year **but not in California thanks to Malia Cohen who made a promise to do everything to reunite property with its owners. And she did. I had a small amount of jewelry, mostly of sentimental value, with one good bracelet my dad gave me 20 years ago. With his death, I would've been bereft if it'd been lost. Though it took 8 months to process- the Controller's office is behind with a flood of property because of COVID- I drove to Sacramento to retrieve it. I didn't want to take a chance on FedEx leaving it outside my apartment gate as they regularly do, even with 'signature required' on the package. I can't say enough good things to the staff for the care and relative speed they processed my claim. They were as concerned as I was that everything was intact. When I saw the bracelet, the tears started. Thank you Controller Malia Cohen! Your staff is hard-working and respectful. With gratitude...
