I know just enough about it to understand how it can all go wrong, and I've felt taken advantage of by contractors before, and so when I got to the point where I felt I could no longer tolerate the deterioration I was observing in my garage, I went to look for a mason. I asked around a lot. The boutique guys, preservationists, and artisans mostly didn't get back to me. One failed to inspire confidence. Another guy stood me up. Another wouldn't go into the city. One never got me a quote. Another guy was very nice and knowledgeable but quoted me a price so high that it had me looking at DIYing it. The search was not pleasant. Brick brothers was different. Stephen understood my concerns about the materials and the work that was needed, he showed an understanding of the principles of brick and mortar masonry on par with the fancier guys, and he quoted me a price I could actually afford. My only critique would be that the written quote lacked detail, but we adequately covered the scope of work verbally. It took two Saturdays, and I'd rough guess 48 man-hours. I'm so glad I didn't have to go the DIY route. Now the way brick goes it's probably at least 5 years before one can be certain that the work is right, but based on my conversations with Stephen and my own observations of his work, I'm confident that I'll see no spalling on the repaired areas. And having seen a few rains since the work was done, I can already report that I'm no longer seeing water infiltration in the repaired areas. So for brick repair needs, Stephen of Brick Brothers hits that rare intersection of competence and price which makes his work a great value. He did a really great job considering that the location working around the pool was tricky. He estimated the concrete to within one wheel barrow load! the finished product looks beautiful. Just like having a new in-ground pool built. The second project involved building a wheelchair ramp and restoring a deteriorated concrete front porch. I asked for a shorter ramp against Bart's advice. It proved to be too steep. He redid the ramp for me only for the cost of the materials. I can't say enough good things about the quality of his work and that of his crew. I trust Bart's recommendations implicitly. Wrong color. Wrong shape. Got a large crack a week later in the concrete and won't return the call…read more Didn't do what he said he would do at time of the estimate. Made a lot of promises they did not keep. Now have to hire someone else to finish the job When he came out for the estimate, I gave him a picture and he said no problem we can do that. He said he would backfill and Grade to level to complete the job. Shortly after starting the job I inquired why the landing was not being made into two steps. At that time, he tells me it would be too much work for him to do! Then he made a teardrop shape instead of a circular shape for the landing. Fortunately I was able to correct that before they poured. I wanted cream with light brown shades to the stamped concrete, instead I have a reddish brown dark color. The edging was not placed around the sidewalk, as in the picture, which he stated he would not do because that was also too much work. They pulled their forms out and left a good 6 inch gap all along the project that they did not backfill and did not grade and refused to do so. We now have a very large crack in the cement, and they will not return the call.
