Feeling a bit shaggy, I have been giving myself haircut since the shelter in place/pandemic. So researching salons for men's in Castro Valley, I found Ka who has experience with Asian straight hair. Believe it or not, not all hair stylists are capable of working on straight hair. Hair cuts are by appointments only, I took a shot in dark that Ka would return my call and schedule an appointment soon. Sure enough, Ka called and had an opening in the afternoon which I grabbed immediately. He brought into his studio that adhered to Covid protocols, he worn a mask and so did I. Ka immediately went into consulting mode and asked a particular style I was interested. I thought I simply wanted to trim a few inches off. He highlighted the challenges of my self cuts and advocated a good haircut will last much longer. The hair cut service proceeded with a shampoo then the cut. Ka was meticulous. He made sure the sides were symmetrical and the backside balanced. So far so good. I guess after I have a chance to sleep on it and see it tomorrow, I will know I will feel about the result but the immediate review was quite good. Ka was cordial, friendly, social and helpful. Calvin is an incredibly talented hairstylist in the Castro Valley Area (San Lorenzo / San Leandro / Hayward / Oakland / East Bay). While he can do both men and women haircuts, I can only speak to the Asian faux hawk he gives me. He is great at listening to the client's needs, providing suggestions and delivering exceptional results. He washes hair with shampoo and conditioner before each haircut and he also rinses hair afterwards. Calvin uses scissors to texture and clippers to fade. He spends a fair amount of time making sure the client's haircut is on point by using a number of techniques. He also completes each appointment with your choice of product. He's made several suggestions for my hair type (black/brown and shiny). We typically use a dull wax or sculpting clay to minimize oily shine and for malleable hair. I wrote this review below back in February and waited a few months to post because I wanted to cool off and make sure I write a decent review without losing the details, so here goes: I have been with Calvin for over two years and my biggest issue is that I got tired of the short a-line bob. For the past year I have been growing my hair from a short bob to a "lob." Calvin has argued endlessly that there is no such thing as a long bob, and has begrudgingly trimmed my hair only 1/2 an inch every time I visited the past few haircuts he gave me. I have written before about how he doesn't like to not cut so little, but his skill as a stylist is, now evident to me, somewhat hampered by his artistic ego. Granted, I don't see all the details in my hair -- I am busy with two little ones under age of 4. I spend 10-15 minutes on my hair, and that is a luxury. I realized that that I have baby hairs growing out postpartum but my issue with my hair were the odd layers on the sides. No matter what I seem to do I can't grow it long and my hair constantly messy even after a haircut. I expressed my frustration to Calvin on my last visit with him, and he finally told me that my hair has never recovered from the postpartum loss and thinness (even though my baby is 20 months!). He also said that, like a chef, he "can only deliver good hair if he has good ingredients." Ouch. I asked if there is anything he can do to fix my hair, he combs and toss through my hair and says that he has done everything right and there is nothing he can suggest other than calling the doctor. Double ouch. What was more embarrassing is that he said this in front of a bunch of other stylist (close quarters there) and the two that were there also laughed and chuckled. I had lab work done and the doctor informed me that there is nothing wrong with me. My hair, even with the thin areas, is quite common among women postpartum. I have decided that there has to be a way to make my hair look better, and a second opinion is what I need. I am very glad that I have found it, elsewhere. *sigh* I put off this review for a long time because I really really wanted to love this place. I really wanted to love the haircut Calvin gave me as much as he said I would. It's been over a month now, I kept thinking, "Well I just need to grow into the haircut then I'll love it" but it hasn't happened yet. Calvin is super friendly and really talkative, we hit it off and we were chatting up a storm the whole time I was there. He said really bold things like "You are going to LOVE your haircut so much you'll think of me every time you're in the shower" or "This haircut is going to be so perfect you don' t even need to style it. Just wash it and let it air dry". Then as if to prove his point, when he was done cutting my hair - he didn't even blow dry it. Just put some smoothing creme on it, combed it out, and sent me on my way. A little while later, when my hair had dried out and I was finally seeing the shape of my haircut, I was really disappointed. It was really shaggy and the way it was cut - it dries in an unkempt looking way. My bangs are also shaggy and thick. If I put up my hair, my bangs look like I have a Beatles' haircut. Not cool. I don't mind putting 15-20 minutes of work into my hair every morning but Calvin said he would give me a low maintenance haircut that I wouldn't need to do anything to, "No straightening, no curling, it's going to have so much style!" Sadly that's not the case and it takes closer to 30-40 minutes to do my hair if I want to wear it down. It's so shaggy that I have to spend a lot more time finding, separating and flat-ironing all the layers. I've just been wearing my hair back a lot lately. I'll just have to grow it out and go somewhere else. Sorry, Calvin. You gave me one of the most fun hair-cutting experiences but sadly the haircut didn't live up to your hype. read more

Calvin is an excellent stylist for those who are seeking a precision cut. He really knows his way around different heads. For example, he pointed out to me where my hair grows more thickly on one side than another (apparently true for most people) and where my cow licks are located, and the direction in which my hair grows (spiral right to left). Great stuff to know for working your hair at home. However he is not a good listener and imposes his ideas on the client. So I am thinking about whether I will return. You know? Kudos for Calvin, the hairstylist. You know someone know his stuff when he cut a short hair all with scissors. The end product looks much more natural and professional. If you've always been cut by the electric trimmer, you need a make-over from your geeky haircut. In addition, my hair texture has always been on the tough side; for the times that I wouldn't make it to Calvin's, I went to at least 5 other hair dresser and they can never cut it right. Got my 2nd haircut with Calvin last week. Actual it really took only one cut for me to know that Calvin's the hair guru I have been in search of all these years. My perennially awkward hair was quickly diagnosed as being upside down and in need of a reverse in layering. Not being able to alter the rate of hair growth (he's good but not that good!), he started the reclamation process during my initial 1-1/2 hour appointment with precision scissor work and while a work in progress pending more time for my hair to grow, I was really please with the results. So pleased I made an appointment for my husband whose satisfaction too should actually double the star rating here. Calvin's mantra is when hair is cut properly it will hold its shape longer between cuts and you shouldn't need to force it to stay in place with things like blow dryers, special brushes, or goop. I cannot say enough great things about her, the products she uses, etc. I have never received a facial where my skin looks so flawless after. I have fair skin that tends to be ruddy. I was recommended by my Shisiedo make-up artist to make an appt with Calvin. By the style, the cut and color of my make-up artist's hair, you can tell a good hair-cut by how proportional the cut is to the shape of the face; the amount of layers, the bounce and body-- I was impressed. With my asian face, not all hair styles are created equal. I was always on a lookout for a stylist that can tap into my inner phyche-- I had asked for Calvin's number and had left a message since I was leaving on vacation in a few days. He immediately called me back and suggested to come 15 min early to take time to consult about my needs. Calvin is a professional from the get-go. He called and texted me the location and time of the appt. When I arrived at C-J's, everyone in the salon was so warm and friendly, they make you feel right at home. I wanted to like this place but that will not be happening. Calvin was able to fit me in on a few days notice after my regular hair stylist couldn't fit me in until August. I was grateful to be seen so soon (and he was prompt at returning phone calls quickly) and was excited to go in for a hair cut. I came out thinking that I had just wasted 1 hour and $45 - hating my hair cut. Calvin is friendly, but friendly just doesn't cut it when I am looking for a good hair stylist. He kept on saying that he would give me a low maintenance hair cut - no blow dry, no flat iron, no curling iron, just wash and let air dry and it will be perfect. He then didn't even blow dry my hair and said "enjoy your new hair" trying to send me my way. Since when did stylists stop blow drying/styling after hair cuts? I asked him to blow dry and he did just that - nothing more. I am used to other hair stylists blow drying AND even flat ironing for me and making my hair so shiny as I walk out the door...I guess I was expecting too much? I walked out with sticky (he put some creme in my hair and apparently used too much of it), shaggy, unnatural looking haircut while feeling disappointed and upset. Now I have to wait until it grows back - or find someone that can fix the damage. Before my hair cut with Calvin, I can at least let my hair air dry and have my natural wave/curly hair take its place. Now, I have to spend more than 45 minutes each morning trying to straighten my hair or do something to look decent. I've been going to Cheryl for hair stuff for years... we met when I was a 16 year old receptionist at former Progressions hair salon. When I got into high school I sported a buzz cut and learned how to fade my own hair all the way through college. Now I'm a family man with a family van, hanging on to my twenties for dear life, so I needed a haircut that fit my life. This is the first time that the thought of going to a stylist ever crossed my mind, and so I consulted a few of my friends (who were equally shocked by my inquiry) and one of them told me about this legendary CALVIN dude that was so skilled with his scissors, that he could achieve a fade purely by scissor cutting alone. No clippers? No guards? Pure scissor cut technique? I had to go see for myself so I drove myself out to Castro Valley and the rest is history. Calvin is one of the few hair stylists left that is a true expert at his craft. This man knows hair like Gordon Ramsey knows food, and he displayed his expertise in the first 10 minutes of my haircut. He sat me down, and as a financial planner would analyze your portfolios and devise an investment strategy perfectly tailored for you, Calvin assessed my situation and came up with a game plan. He actually felt my skull and pointed out why he was going to cut a certain way so that my hair would compliment my head shape! Then the real show began. Watching Calvin wield his scissors is like watching a maestro creating a masterpiece with his paintbrush. My mother has always gone to Calvin for color/cuts/perms. She has been with him for 20 years now. She has basically followed him after the many times he has relocated. After Calvin settled down at C-J's, I wanted to get some highlights done, since it was hard for me to trust someone else, so why not go to the guy my mom has been going to for the past 20 years? So i did, and he did amazing job. Knowing it was my first time getting my hair colored, he knew I didn't want anything too crazy, but enough to tell a difference. He gave me red copper highlights and it looks great in sunlight and indoors. He really knows how to cut hair as well, I never need to straighten my hair in the morning. He gave me great layers and my hair feels light, but there is still enough volume for my liking. Now I get my hair recolored every 2-3 months, because my color locks in so well and still looks good for a long time. Every now and then, I go lighter or darker, he does a great job. I've been meaning to review. I hate to give a not so good review to someone so nice. But the style didn't suit me at all. I asked for blended layers for my ultra fine long hair. I got layers that were really looking like separate hair cuts, and they're still growing out. I think he'd give really good straight cuts but didn't take into account my perm. He gave me a elongated shag and badly angled bangs. In my experience the ones trained in Asia love that shag, it's low maintenance but man it is not an attractive look for me. read more

After getting my hair done, the next day my Asian mother was complaining about a visible blond peek a boo above my right ear. Don't get me wrong, the blond peek a boo was great with my hair but my Asian mother didn't like it, so I respect my mother's wishes. So I went in on Sunday, I explained that happened, and he nicely color the peek a boo back to my base color, black. The best part, HE DIDN'T EVEN CHARGE ME A PENNY! I absolutely LOVE Cheryl. I have really long curly hair and I came in to get a trim and highlights. Cheryl really TRULY is an expert when it comes to dealing with different types of hair. When she trimmed and layered my SUPER LONG hair, my curls looked bouncy, healthy, and simply amazing. She applied peek-a-boo highlights (which I had never heard of before) and that turned out perfect because it was subtle and flowed with my curls. I had to come back the second time because the highlights turned orange (probably from the dye in the past) and she corrected it with no hesitation and even gave me tips on how to keep it from turning orange in the future. Overall, the salon is warm and inviting. The other employees are so sweet and you can tell that their customers have been with them for many years. Cheryl is very personable, friendly, and professional. You can definitely tell that she has had years of experience with hair coloring, cutting, and styling. I've had horrible experiences in the past with salons who fried my hair after getting hightlights or chopping off more than I requested, so if you're looking for someone to trust your hair with in terms of color or cutting, I highly recommend Cheryl. read more

This review is for Calvin, aka my hair hero. I have been going to Calvin for 4 years and as long as live in the Bay area, I will continue to go to him. I have thick, naturally wavy hair, a bit uncommon for an Asian. I've spent quite some time trying all sorts of techniques, products, treatments to get my hair to be nice and sit still. I've had many cuts that turned out a hot mess since many people don't know how to deal with my kind of Asian hair. Calvin, however, has been able to provide masterful cuts with plenty of style! He is very detail oriented, yet is quick and skillful. He really knows what he's doing and will explain to me the concept of his cutting so that I understand what's going on and he makes it a point to give me a cut that will grow out well. He's also cheery and hilarious to talk to. When I first went to Calvin, I was straightening my hair all the time because that was the only way I knew how to deal with it. I've been going to Calvin's for haircut and styling for several years now. I've followed him from Oakland Chinatown to Castro Valley. Calvin is hands down the best hair stylist in the bay area because he is consistent, professional and stylish. Consistent I have thick coarse hair and I like to keep it shoulder length, slightly layered in the back, and easy to do.
