While visiting the area, we ate at Bäckerbrunnen four times! First night in Wiesbaden a co-worker took us there for dinner; after he had lunch there!
This is a small restaurant, located in the pedestrian marketplace. From the street, you step up into a small hallway and enter the restaurant through a door on your right. Once through the door, there are a few tables on your right and a large bar on the left. If there are no tables available here, squeeze past the bar and you will find half a dozen more tables. You can speak to the bartender on your way by (they do speak English) who will see if there are any tables back there to fit your party. They also have a 'community table' where you may be seated with other guests if no tables are open - with your approval of course. If this is the only table open, take it. You may make new friends and you definitely do not want to miss the schnitzel.
It is May, and this is white asparagus time in Germany. Only available for one month, restaurants have special menus to high light this German delicacy. Bäckerbrunner is no exception.
Over the course of our visits we sampled the mushroom schnitzel, peppercorn schnitzel, Vienna style turkey, grilled turkey with spinach-cheese sauce, the giant sausage, hamburger steak, sliced pork with mushroom cream sauce, pork cordon bleu, fried camembert small plate, asparagus with hollandaise sauce and asparagus soup. There were six of us!
Schnitzel is a thin pork fillet, breaded and deep fried to a crispy, deliciousness. The Turkey fillet is cooked the same way and 'Vienna style' means there is no sauce.
The mushroom cream sauce has plenty of mushroom pieces and was a favorite among our group. It was ordered several times. The peppercorn sauce is a very tasty red pepper sauce with what appears to be capers (not hard peppercorns) throughout. This one was not a cream sauce.
The spinach-cheese sauce, is very mild and tasty. I found it to be a bit salty, but I don't eat much salt, so don't take my word for it. If you normally eat salt, this may be just fine for you; another member of our party raved about it!
The hamburger steak is a large sphere of ground beef. We can only guess that it is baked as it did not have grill marks and was cooked all the way through. It was devoured!
And when they say giant sausage: they are NOT kidding. All the portions here are quite large.
The fried camembert small plate was shared by two of us and was more than enough. Accompanied by three large grilled slices of baguette, butter and cranberry compote, the cheese is warm, soft and tasty. Spread it over the bread with a little cranberry. Mmmm, mmmm!
The asparagus soup was creamy and slightly sweet with large chunks of white asparagus. This is a heavy soup, and for me, along with the cheese, was more than enough for a lunch. It also comes with baguette slices on the side. I thoroughly enjoyed this soup and would have eaten it all day if possible.
At dinner our group sampled a side dish of asparagus with hollandaise sauce. The asparagus is peeled, boiled and presented on a large platter with the hollandaise on the side.
All together we sampled three types of potatoes which come with the meals. Pomme frites are shoe string french fries and are crispy outside, soft inside. Then there is the fried potatoes that are similar to home fries. Soft and tasty. The last type is a hash brown potato. The waitress allowed us to substitute one potato for another if desired.
Many dishes come with a very nice side salad dressed in a traditional yogurt-vinegar dressing. The menu includes many items so be sure to check it out on line. Sadly there is no wi-fi available for guests here. They have a small number of beers and wines available on the menu and a full bar as well as soft and hot drinks.
The interior is cozy. In front, it is bright with a row of windows. The bar has a large, white (marble?) curved bar top and cushioned stools. You literally have to squeeze past patrons sitting at the bar to get to the back room. In back, it is a little dark with clay lamps over and candles on each table, but not what I would call romantic. Good for groups of four or six. Lots of wood accents all around, wooden tables and chairs and padded benches. Very much what you would want in a German restaurant. Guten appetit! read more
