OUTSTANDING!!
Without question, this is one of the best Lebanese restaurants we have been to in years!! Our area once boasted two Lebanese places within a short drive -- Aladdin's, which was part of a chain and the Cedar Cafe, which closed when the owner returned to his native country of Jordan. As much as we enjoyed both, neither compared to what we found at Byblos!!
Our visit to Byblos was a farewell dinner with friends who are leaving the area and we could not have enjoyed a finer place to enjoy the company of good friends, to share some laughs, and reminisce. We were welcomed with broad smiles, warm welcomes, almost as if we were family.
Every table receives a small platter of labneh with a drizzle of olive oil, pita chips, and sweet olives. Whereas labneh can often be sour, Byblos sweetens their labneh with a bit of zatar (a mix of spices). Also served is a basket of small, freshly baked pita, still puffed from the heat and perfect for scooping up dips and pinching small pieces of meat.
The menu is more than the typical kabobs, shawarmas, hummus, etc. The Byblos menu is a sampling of wonderful Lebanese dishes that are frequently absent from other restaurants. From our sampling, Byblos doesn't just have a great selection of Lebanese dishes -- they do justice to each platter served.
For appetizers we opted for the foul m dammes, a dip comprised of fava beans, parsely, garlic, olive oil, and more -- it was tangy and sweet all at once and nothing short of delicious!! Their moussakah (a stew of eggplant and tomatoes) was a wonderful blend of herb and spices that delivered an explosion of flavor. One member of our group does not care for eggplant and agreed that it was delicious!
It has been more than two decades since I have seen mihshi koussa (stuffed zucchini) on a menu. It certainly has not been on menus in the Burke/Springfield places we used to frequent. Stuffed with lean ground beef, rice, and pine nuts, the small Spanish zucchini were bursting with flavor . Several grape leaves, also stuffed with ground lamb and rice were every bit as delicious.
The sheikh al mihshi (eggplant stuffed with ground beef and pine nuts and served in a spicy tomato sauce) was every bit as delibious as the mihshi koussa -- chock full of flavor and nothing short of fantastic!!
Our friends opted for dishes that were served with Byblos' rice pilaf -- a mix of rice, vermicelli noodles, and topped with roasted almonds. They raved about the collection of subtle flavors and what I saw and tasted lived up to expectations.
Byblos is a gem of a restaurant. All of the staff are welcoming, friendly, and make each meal a joyous occasion. The restaurant is situated off the beaten track, but it is well worth the effort. We will have to drive at least 45 minutes to return, but the food is so good and the menu filled with so many delicious Lebanese dishes that we will definitely be returning - again and again.
Now, if I could only convince the family to open a second location closer to the Burke/Springfield area. What a welcomed catch that would be!!! read more
