First I loved the hotel . And mark the front desk guy was a really good guy .I often don't like hotels . But this place was beautiful and quite . I stay in number 1 suite . Lovely and clam . Although I didn't eat the breakfast buffet but it was nice to, have a grab and go bar like granola bars . And I had run out of coffee pods and mark helped me get some more . Close to the university and just a beautiful place. Although hope next time I come the fountain would be working . Beware of Dishonest and Unaccommodating Policies I had one of the most frustrating and disappointing experiences with the Buxton Inn. I booked my stay through Expedia and at no point was I made aware of their ridiculous 9 PM check-in cutoff. My flight was delayed, forcing me to rebook at the last minute, and I still made every effort to arrive as early as possible. I even contacted the hotel and left a handwritten note on the lobby door. Despite all of this, the hotel refused to accommodate me, refused to refund me for the first night, and left me stranded late at night having to book another hotel out of pocket. To make matters worse, when I raised this issue with the manager, the response was dismissive and unapologetic. They essentially hid behind "policy" rather than exercising any level of professionalism, empathy, or basic customer service. Most hotels understand that travel delays are out of the guest's control, and will work with you. Not here. This experience cost me extra money, unnecessary stress, and wasted time. To add insult to injury, the information about the 9 PM cutoff was not disclosed anywhere on my Expedia booking. That is deceptive and unfair to travelers who are relying on third-party reservations. If you are flying in from out of town, I strongly advise you to avoid this hotel at all costs. Their outdated, inflexible policies and lack of care for their guests speak volumes. There are plenty of other hotels in the area that will treat you with respect and fairness. Shame on Buxton Inn for operating with such dishonesty and disregard for guests. read more

My husband and I were so excited for a little getaway and love a little history so we thought this place seemed perfect. We were somewhat disappointed to find out the pub was not open due to staffing shortage and the continental breakfast was sparse. On the website the pub looked like it would be open, and for what you pay a night you would expect more for a continental breakfast. Also, the night we stayed we noticed the price per night (for a room similar to ours was only half the price). Other than that, this was a cool experience! read more

During a recent trip to watch a local collegiate baseball game, we decided to stay at the famous Buxton Inn. We made a smart decision. While the size of the room was slightly smaller than a conventional hotel, the aura easily compensated for the lack of square footage. The room was furnished appropriately, nostalgic to its era, which is precisely why we chose to stay there. Breakfast was continental style, but the "high-quality" items available made it more than sufficient. While the kitchen itself was still closed, the dining facility made you feel as if Abraham Lincoln was sitting just across the room. The staff was both professional and exceedingly cordial. Stephanie, who cheerfully greeted us and promptly checked us in, also knew her history, an important part of the Buxton Inn's charm. Parking was both ample and easily accessible. The location of the Buxton Inn complex (multiple houses with accommodations) is truly serene. As for the stories about ghosts; not sure if the subtle little noises we heard meant anything, but just to be on the safe side I winked at Major Buxton. In a nutshell, the Buxton Inn in Granville, Ohio is charmingly romantic, and well worth a visit for anyone who wants to step back in time whilst stepping away from the humdrum of conventional overnight accommodations! read more

My wife and I , used to really enjoy coming to the Buxton for lunch and sometimes dinner . Very sad that you have decided not to continue . You guys think you're doing fine with private events . But what you don't realize is you've taken away something that was very dear to the public . Now you're just like every place else ! Only in it for the money ! What a shame ! Average. Service has been lackluster the three times I have been there. I have witnessed servers complaining about management, I have witnessed management complain, the food isn't offensive but isn't great. My Manhattan wasn't anything special but paid a premium for it. Don't waste your time. It's a neat property but I have found the management to make this a place I would rather not spend my time nor money. Go across the street to the Granville Inn. Just a note - I thought initially this my be an isolated occurrence but given that more than half of the Yelp reviews are two stars or less, I feel validated. read more

My family and I had an overall pleasant dinner experience at this establishment. The staff was very thoughtful and due to low crowds, allowed us to choose a table for our party. The server also checked and made sure my mother was able to have dairy free and gluten free options for her restrictions. We were served timely and there was just the right amount of check-ins. The complimentary yeast rolls were delicious as well as the chicken curry soup and sweet potato fries. The chicken curry soup was very unique and even though it had grapes, all the flavors blended very well. I had the Chicken Divan which was a great selection! It came out warm in a baked dish and had just the right combination of chicken, broccoli, wild rice, and cheese crust. It was also a fairly large portion and adequate for the price. In addition to the excellent service and food, the atmosphere is a must for history buffs! The inn has been around since 1812, and even though it's "haunted", it's very warm and inviting. It stays true to its early 19th century heritage with colonial style interior design. The staff even encouraged us to explore the building! It couldn't be more perfect of an aesthetic tucked away in the town of Granville. I look forward to coming here again! read more

We got married in Granville and the Buxton was one of our recommended accommodations for guests. When they stated they required a two night stay, were unwilling to change this and said no early check-ins, even just one hour for the wedding party, were allowed (our ceremony was at 3pm), we should have pulled our contract. Numerous guests were spoken to rudely when they called with questions, and inconsistent information was given by staff to guests. This was all before the weekend even started. During the weekend the Buxton stayed true to their prior service, to the point that non-wedding guests were offering to help guests with issues and inconveniences. It was horribly embarrassing and the Buxton was the hands down the worst part of the wedding weekend. THE OPPOSITE OF HOSPITALITY read more

Took my girlfriend here on a date to celebrate her new job. It was absolutely lovely and gorgeous! The staff was incredibly inviting and friendly. Our waitress had been there for a long time and was familiar with everything. The food was A+++ fantastic! As other reviews state, nothing like the new fusion type of food you find most places. Just timeless classics and actually a very different type of food these days! We loved everything we tried which included a salad, the fried brie, french onion soup, Chesapeake bake, and 'louie' which was the Louisiana chicken dish. Everything was so beautiful and top notch! Afterwards we went around to check the different rooms out and it was very cool! My girlfriend loved this place, and it made me love it that much more!! =) It should be noted there is a pub type atmosphere downstairs that you can eat at. We did not eat there but went down and saw it! It's inexpensive priced and looked very nice down there too! So you have a dressy attire place and a casual place downstairs! Two restaurants in one that you wouldn't know about unless you went and found it! They do not mix the environments at all! in other words, you can't hear people down in the pub. The nice dining areas (they have like 11 dining rooms) are very beautiful, each their own theme, and very serene! With over 200 years of history, this is one fabulous place in Granville! Absolutely recommended!!! read more

I was very disappointed in our evening at the Buxton Inn. Our server was exhausted (maybe they don't have enough wait staff) and sloppily dressed. When she served me a glass of wine, the glass was dirty and I asked for a new glass. She showed the glass to her manager and they studied it carefully to see whether I was telling the truth. The Inn was dirty, smelled of stale cigarette smoke, and the staff were not professional. We were so unimpressed by the restaurant that we left before we were served any food. The Buxton has seen better days. Much better days. read more

The Buxton Inn has so much history - its old and supposedly haunted! We had a great time downing beers and noshing on their delicious burgers. These burgers were super flavorful and were obviously made from high quality beef. Service was fast and friendly - A great place to get a classic meal when you are in the area. I can see why this place has endured the test of time and remained a favorite among Denisonians. read more

We spent an evening at the Buxton Inn while visiting nearby Denison University. We had a very spacious room with two queen beds in one of the inn's houses. Keeping in mind that these facilities are well over 100 years old, we had a pleasant stay. The furnishings are antiques and my bed was quite creaky. The mattress itself was quite comfortable and the linens very clean. We had a small restroom that served quite well. The innkeeper, Dot, prepared a small continental breakfast for us and placed it in the mini refrigerator in our room - this was a nice gestured which I was not expecting. We were there on a day that the restaurant was closed (Mondays) so we did not get to eat there, unfortunately. Of course as with many old inns there are stories of ghosts. Supposedly there is a cat ghost that will jump on your bed at night. I think it must have been my imagination but I thought I felt a cat sleeping next to my legs, but I'm sure it was just the tightness of the sheet tucked under the mattress ...? read more

Stayed here on the way home for the holidays. The Inn was all holiday decked out and was bustling with locals in the tavern and a few private parties when we checked in. We were showed to our room, number 9, the most haunted room in the place and was warned it was more rustic than their other rooms for the " ghost factor". It was a comfortable two bedroom suite with a clean bathroom. The tavern met capacity shortly after we checked so we had to take our happy hour across the street. Returning later after dinner, we had a night cap in the tavern and a great conversation with Mark the bartender. We slept well in a very quiet room and didn't experience any ghosts. Overall the staff is welcoming and helpful. The complementary "continental breakfast" was a bit disappointing but getting it brought to our room was a nice touch. The hotel is in great condition and excellent upkeep overall. Our room, if meant to be rustic was so, but it verges on forgotten. The dated bathroom was not an issue as it was very clean and utilitarian. A good coat of paint, especially on wall trim, lamps that all worked, curtains that weren't tacked in place and fresh carpet would go a LONG way to increasing perceived value of the room but wouldn't take a big investment. Nevertheless we'll recommend it and book here again when we come through. Just some suggestions to keep this grand old lady going. Thankyou for a nice holiday stay over, Buxton!! read more

We had a reservation at Buxton Inn. We were driving from Boston & hit horrible traffic in Pennsylvania due to construction, torrential rain and a tornado warning. I called the Inn in the afternoon to say we'd arrive closer to 9:30pm. Hotel employee called me back to say they can't accommodate late arrivals. I asked her if she could help me come up with creative solution - leave key at bar across street, leave in spot by entrance... anything. All she said was "no, I already talked to manager. Can you ask local person to pick it up?" I said "I wouldn't be getting a hotel if I knew people in Granville area". I was shocked they didn't have back up plan / key box for late arrivals - what about all those people who get delayed on flights (and that would have been our situation if we flew in that night, due to weather). I called manager and got her voicemail. had to pull off highway to find new place to stay and booked something. Then manager called back to say she could find employee to stay extra 15 minutes for us but by that point, I had already booked another hotel and also was running even later, due to having to stop highway to find new place to stay. If the info had been on booking page about no check-ins after 9pm, I would never have booked it. I have stayed in similar establishments over the years and never encountered similar situation in which there is no back-up plan to help guest if they arrive late. read more

We had my son's rehearsal dinner in the garden room on a summer Friday evening. The room looked lovely, the food was delicious and the servers were very attentive. I have stayed at hundreds of inns, B&Bs, etc. The Buxton appears nice but is loud. Very loud. HVAC units adorn the property and go on and off all night long. There's no escaping them. They kept me up all night long. Left me tired and exhausted before an important race the next morning. Left after the first night. Buxton offered no condolence, no refund, nothing at all. They have my money already, I guess. The bathrooms were motel-like, with old scratchy towels. The tavern restaurant offered a $15 grilled vegetable salad that was nothing more that bagged arugula and a few tiny pieces of cold butternut squash. Overall, an expensive, awful, sad lesson. I left tired, hungry and $250 less in my bank account. Go elsewhere. read more

Ate their once during pandemic. Food was bland and overpriced relative to quality. Service was bad. Figured it was just pandemic and we live down street so wanted to support them. Recently Bought 2 $100 bourbon tasting tickets from an instagram post they put out. Due to confusion (our fault and their fault) we missed the event. They're having another bourbon tasting a few weeks later. They refuse to book us for that or even give us a gift card. Poor customer service can't support them. read more

Just a few weeks ago I teased a friend for being scared to stay in the haunted room (#9) at the Buxton. Then, of course, I end up in it a few nights ago and lawd that shit is scary. Not that I saw a ghost, just that I kept thinking I would. And therefore didn't sleep. Not awesome. The rooms at the Buxton are what you'd expect from a quaint 19th century hotel: lots of lace, florals, and color. The Sapphire room is indeed as blue as you'd expect, and another room had 4 curtains on every window. Modern conveniences like flat screen TVs, hot water, and fancy hairdryers won't be found here, but homey touches like original artwork and free Lorna Doones abound. The real winner of the Buxton is the Tavern downstairs. Going down there feels like you're in another world, and it's been one of my favorite bars since I turned 21 and came there often during my senior year at Denison for their insanely strong California Lemonades. And I mean strong: one was enough to get you fully pre-gamed for a night of fun on campus. This time I returned for the gigantic mugs of Sam Adams Seasonal: 25oz of frothy goodness for a mere $6. Plus the fantastic atmosphere and super friendly staff at no additional cost. Hurrah for that. They serve food in the Tavern but it's nothing special, so just sit back, relax (if you can ignore the whole haunted thing) and soak in the history of the charming little town of Granville. The Buxton is by far the best place to do it. read more

I confess, the Buxton is something of a family tradition for me. As my father once commuted to and from Granville when I was a kid, trips to and dinners at the Buxton Inn for special occasions have been a part of my childhood, and I'm glad that the establishment is still around so it can continue to be a part of my adulthood. Now, I have not actually stayed at the Inn in years. I have very fond memories of it as a kid though, hunting for the legendary ghosts along the rickety balconies and within the uniquely furnished rooms. A special birthday treat was staying in the elegant suite supposedly belonging to the "Blue Lady"...and having the blind unexpectedly raise during the night! Back then, at least, each room had its own theme, colors, and antique furniture which, despite its age, was usually very comfortable. Modern appliances including mini-fridges and TVs made it perfectly habitable for the modern traveler, and great fun for a kid with a love of history and an active imagination. I remember thinking then, though, it would also be a fantastic location for a romantic getaway. Maybe someday I'll bring someone dear to me there to introduce them to the romanticism of the Inn. It's like a bed and breakfast, with all the charm, but none of the having to deal with nosy landladies. They used to have a delicious breakfast too... However, as to the current state of the rooms and such, I cannot say. I can comment on the dinner menu, though, which is as delicious as I remember it being. So, the restaurants... The Buxton has two restaurants - a tavern downstairs that specializes in the typical pub grub at a lower price and with a casual dress code - and an elegant upscale restaurant that serves classic American dishes of primo quality (and prices). I haven't dined at the tavern in years, so I will only comment on the dining rooms. Like the rooms, the dining rooms each have their own characteristics. One room looks like nothing much has changed from 1812. Another, with an elegant bar, is cozy and romantic. My favorite room, though, is the garden patio. The chairs aren't overly comfortable, but you can't beat the feeling of eating outdoors...without dealing with the wind, rain, and bugs. The glass-roof, draped with cloth to block out the sun, gives a roomy feeling. There are also a plethora of potted and hanging plants that accentuate the outdoor-sy feel. Elegant, relaxing, and really quite romantic if I didn't usually come with my family. As to the food... Honestly, in all the years I've been coming to the Buxton, I can't remember ever having a bad meal. There's no "fusion" with any other cuisine, nothing "contemporary" or "modern." Buxton sticks to its historical roots, serving perfectly prepared American cuisine that I imagine uses old recipes, with fresh, rich ingredients. And for this reason, it excels. Personal recommendations include: Chesapeake bake- rich seafood in a creamy sauce over a rice pilaf Chicken curry soup - semi-sweet soup with a lot of spices, chicken, almonds, and grapes - they give a burst of juicy, fruity flavor Brie - a wheel of fresh cheese, fried to perfection and served with fruit, jam, and toast in just the right amount to devour the entire thing Favorites from the past include: Louisiana chicken - chunks of chicken in cornmeal, sweet, juicy - absolute perfection. Death by Chocolate cake - simply put, the best d*** chocolate cake ever. Mousse, pastry, a chocolate shell, whipped cream, and a cherry on top - my father made a point of bringing us back a slice when he was working in Granville. It almost made up for him being away so much. Sadly, these dishes are not currently on the menu, but I hope to see them there again, some day! Now, the one word of warning about the Buxton is the price. It is not a cheap eatery. Most dishes will cost you upwards of $17, not to mention any soups or appetizers you get. The meals do come with delicious bread (sweet, moist rolls) and a fresh salad, so you will definitely not leave hungry (I actually end up with a box a lot of the time). However, for a special occasion, a fancy date, or just a delicious indulgence, the Buxton Inn is definitely worth a visit. read more

When I told friends who have lived in central Ohio longer than I have (19 years for me) that I was going to visit the Buxton Inn during a weekend getaway in Granville, I got many variations on "Oooooh!" in response. Friends who grew up here recalled special occasions here, graduations, birthdays, parents' anniversaries. I heard about the beautiful building, the haunted rooms, the picturesque setting, and the lavish dining. Maybe it was just built up too much. Upon arriving, the building was (as advertised) historic and charming, but the closer I got, the less charming it looked. The Buxton Inn sign was rusted, the front patio looked neglected. My companions and I were quite early, so we were nearly the only patrons. The dining rooms were the very definition of "old fashioned." I doubt the interiors here have been updated in 30 years. That's not necessarily a bad thing - a classic decor can be very appealing, if it's well-maintained. This just seemed shabby to me. We were seated next to a window, and when I turned to look outdoors, all I could see was the massive cobweb that filled the entire windowsill. If you're going to have classic, traditional decor that's been allowed to age with the building, you'd better keep it clean. The menu also seemed very old-fashioned. Again, that it is not in itself a condemnation, and the food was good. Not spectacular. Good. My steak was cooked very well and was tasty, but my entire plate had been sprinkled with chopped parsley as if it had just walked several blocks through a ticker-parsley parade. My companions had the special, a seafood pasta dish, which they both said was tasty, but the portion was ridiculously large. We all had dinner salads, which were unremarkable. For having been sold as a special dining experience, I was expecting more. Classic food done with care and attention to detail? Everything here just felt tired and worn-out. If you want an example of what I mean, visit the Refectory, long one of the best restaurants in Columbus. It too has a historic physical plant, and they have retained its classic charm - but it always feels and looks impeccable, and the food is exquisite. Our waiter told us that the Granville Inn, just across the street, was about to close for six months for extensive renovation. Perhaps that's something the Buxton Inn might consider. read more

The inn was good, but not what I was expecting. We were dressed up very nice for our anniversary, and were at in a loud bar area. There was plenty of room in other parts of the restaurant, but we dealt with it. The food was good, but took a long time to come out. Because it took so long, we were there up until closing. We had the joy of hearing the servers yelling in the kitchen and complaining about getting told to stay late to clean, even though that wasn't their night or their job. The manager basically told them to deal with it, which only got them more fired up behind the managers back. It was dessert with a show. Overall, I would recommend coming early and asking for a seat in the far back away from the bar and the kitchen. read more

Last visit was disappointing. I've been many times before and had decent meals and service, but this time was just bad. The service was incredibly slow for a not very busy restaurant. Cool scenery. Rooms are outdated as to be expected with such a historic place. Employees said they had never experienced anything paranormal so might be a tourist hoax. Our group was asked if we were paying guests while playing cards on the patio (which we found very unwelcoming since we had met the same staff only a few hours before).
