    Buttermilk Falls

The falls are beautiful. The road to the falls is bad . Avoid if you have a small car. BIG potholes!

It's early October and so much leaves already turning. It's not idea but the fresh air made up for the lack of view of the time being. The drive up the seasonal road is worth the trip in my opinion. Parking is very limited. I thought we could drive up to the fall directly however the bridge was closed for some reason. We have to park about a mile or so from the fall which made this a really nice walk. Social distancing is being practiced here as space is not an issue. We got to the fall in about 30 minutes walk and it's not that impressive. Climbing the stair can be a bit tricky as you want to make way for people coming down as well. We spend about 10 minutes taking pictures and taking it in. You can of course bring some picnic stuff and there are a lot of space. The view from the top is really nice thou. I was playing the fresh clean water up top but keep it short to avoid human.

My brother and I were having one of our typical motorcycle adventures on a Sunday when we decided to take a ride over to Buttermilk Falls. It is the tallest waterfall in the state of NJ and it is conveniently located directly across from the parking lot if you do not wanna take a hike to a waterfall. Unfortunately for my motorcycle, the roads to the parking lot are just compacted dirt, littered with holes. I wouldn't bring a car with low ground clearance here. It's not a terribly impressive waterfall, but it is nice. There's a pretty cool hiking trail once you take the stairs to the top. I stayed off the trail and followed the stream. It was a pretty good time

Amazingly beautiful and easy hike for all levels! Great way to get outdoors and enjoy nature.

Buttermilk Falls, Crater Lake, Hemlock Pond This fall is NOT "tall" but a fun family hike. It is NOT a hard hike if you have hiked difficult trails. We found wild blackberries and wild blueberries in Late July/Early August. Here is a great BLOG post with trail information for this hike: https://www.njhiking.com/best-hikes-in-nj-buttermilk-falls/

It was a nice scenic drive to buttermilk fall..lots of trail and state park near by. Took a 2 mile hike to the waterfall..it was incredible! Be careful of SNAKES!!!!

Can confirm, wifi was weak (read non-existent)

Warning: The "road" leading up to the waterfall is littered with potholes (read craters). Low clearance cars stay away. You'd think the roads to the tallest waterfall in New Jersey would be better maintained. Road situation aside, the waterfall is directly across from the parking area so if you're feeling particularly lazy but you want to see a waterfall, this is the perfect place. Waterfall chasing has been a a frequent activity for my brother and I as of late (sorry TLC) and I can't recall any other waterfall where you can get your vehicle this close to the falls. The waterfall itself is not terribly strong, but it is very tall as advertised. To the left of the falls there are stairs to the top which lead to a trail through the woods. The trail can take you to Crater Lake, Hemlock Pond, among other sights but my brother and I decided to save that for another day. Instead we went off the beaten path and hiked along the stream. All in all it was a fun couple of hours and we were never too far from our motorcycles. Very good place for a quick stop or a day long affair.

The water fall is beautiful, great place for a photo op. At this time you have to park almost 2 miles from the falls, the parking lot right by it is currently closed. The surrounding trails in the park are very nice, and not too strenuous. If you follow the river you can land at the teacup which is another much smaller waterfall. Sit and take in the scenery.

We hiked Buttermilk Falls yesterday and it was gorgeous! The road getting to the falls is awful. Huge, deep potholes everywhere. Once we got to about 1.5-2mi away from the parking lot, the road seemed impassable. Our GPS ended up directing us to a different road that was NOT driveable. We parked there and decided to walk to the falls (about 1.75mi). I'm really glad we did because it was a beautiful walk and perfect for us as it made the falls in the middle of our hike vs the beginning so we could entice our kids to keep going:) our 6, 4.5 and 2.5 year olds were all able to easily walk the stairs though we definitely kept an eye on them as it's a dangerous area for young kids (close to falls, drop offs, steep). Definitely recommend!

This waterfall and hiking area is located along the Delaware Water Gap region in New Jersey. It is about 40 minutes north of Interstate 80, the second exit after crossing the Delaware River but it is not marked. There are a few entrances to the park. My family and I drove to the falls from the southernmost entrance. The road was in rough shape and you definitely should take your time driving this road because it is not paved and has many huge potholes. Taking our time we drove to the waterfall 1.3 miles after crossing a single lane bridge. WARNING: The road gets harder to drive after the bridge. Reaching the waterfall we parked in a small parking lot across the road. The waterfall is very nice but large like Bushkill or Niagara Falls. It is the largest waterfall in New Jersey at 85 feet tall. After spending several minutes at the base of the waterfall we decided to climb to the top. There is a trail to tbe left of the water fall. The trail has timber stairs and hand rails in some spots. Its about 5 minutes or so to ascend to the top. A small stream flows at the top of the waterfall and there is a hiking trail to the right but we decided not to try it. The water was cool and felt nice, contrasting the hot weather that day. There were only 10 other people there at the time that we were there. So it is not well known. Overall a nice experience.

The pictures look so beautiful but I can't see spending $15 per person for a 15 minute walk so needless to say we didn't do it.

It's a two hour drive from Long Island and 3.5 hours when there's a fire that's closed down the Throgs Neck Bridge. But this lake, also near Blue Mountain Lake is amazing. A few years back you would have been hard pressed to find anyone else there but on a hot Saturday in summer, there were about 30 people and some families picnicing, lounging and boozing by the water. The water was warm and almost everyone was a local who had their own kayaks, rafts and floatation devices. We traded beers for rafts and sat in the middle of the lake for at least an hour. The park closes at 10pm but most people leave around sun down so if you bring music, BUG SPRAY, a lantern and flashlights, and the game Apples to Apples you can have yourself a private lake side party undisturbed from 8 - 10p. Downsides: It costs so much money to go over bridges now from NY to NJ make sure to borrow mom or dad's EZ Pass! DAMN! Again, bring bug spray. My legs are itchy, itchy, itchy now. WARNING: It is very easy to get lost coming to this lake. Your GPS may not know what you're talking about because it's hard to enter a town name for the location in Jersey. Here's how to get there (you can thank me later - just don't tell a lot of people) Take 80 to Exit 1 - the entrance of the delaware water gap rec. area. Ask for a map w/ the person at the visitor's entrance but basically you're looking for a general store that leads you down a windy road (past blue mountain lake) and veer left at the rocky path at the end of the road. There really aren't any signs so getting a map and coming in from Exit 1 is your best bet. ALSO BE CAREFUL if you get lost and someone points you to CRANDon lake. This is Crater Lake and that's what you're looking for. My friend got very lost because of his bad hearing.

Which was great because the lot was very full. There are two walk up windows to check in. I walked up to the window and had to wait literally 1 min; the line was short and quick. The girl found my reservation went over paper work that needed to be filled out, was very friendly and helpful. I will say the other girl was not particularly friendly. They're talking to you threw a window and I am partially deaf, when I asked the girl to repeat the last thing she said she was so annoyed she spoke in short sentence like I was dumb. And just before she helped me there was another group of girls that seemed to be very annoyed with her because she refused to help them. Like I said there were two lines and they were in her line but she wanted to help the gentlemen infront of me in the other line. Idk why, he wasn't even paying attention and only needed to drop his car keys off. Whatever. We grabbed our life vests, got our overview of the river and quickly hopped on a very nice, 12 pax van. It was about a 10 min ride to the drop off area which wasn't bad. I really liked that the staff grabs your kayak and paddle and brings it to the water. All you have to do is sit down and paddle away. There is another company that shared the drop off area so just be aware that you don't get the wrong kayak lol The DR is beautiful. The water is so nice and clean. There are lots of places to stop off at to eat lunch or take a swim. There were a lot of people camping along the banks. So be mindful of that when pulling off to a beach. When we go to our pick up location it was just as smooth as our drop off spot. You just paddle to the beach and a staff grabs your kayak and pulls you in. You take your things and they take the kayak and paddle. At the top of the stairs you just walk to the right and the van is waiting to take you back. Overall, wonderful company to book a kayak or raft from to enjoy the beautiful river. In highly recommend and will rebook with them. I recommend wearing a hat and water shoes and bringing a cooler for drinks and snacks.

(This was a few months ago so the details could be a bit iffy.)…read more This was a very impromptu trip and everything at Edge of the Woods makes doing that easy. Head to the website, book the date & time you want and you're done. www.watergapadventure.com/river-trips A few things worth noting: They offer multiple trip lengths. The standard 4-, 6- and 10-mile trip (Smithfield to Portland) are all booked generically and then when you get there you tell them what you want to do. All pricing is the same which believe me compared to others companies, that's very different - in a good way. They do offer two other longer trips but those require calls to the main office I assume to assess river conditions; your own competency and shuttle availability. The main office in Delaware Water Gap is very easy to find and there was plenty of parking on a quiet post-Labor Day Monday. You check in, you're handed a laminated map, life jacket and given a brief route explanation and then you're off in the van. One problem arose and it was kind of a PIA but it was worked around. Most companies have different types/sizes/models of kayaks and quite often, will ask you what you prefer. Not here. When we left the office, the guy driving didn't say a word to me until we get to Smithfield Beach to unload. He had a few kayaks pre-loaded in the carrier but definitely did not look at them before we left. One of them had a broken foot pedal that he said couldn't be used, another was very much designed for a smaller individual (i.e. if you're taller and/or taller & larger it ain't happening safely) which only left two tandem models. Using a tandem as a single individual is not the end of the world but especially when the seats are still left in the two person configuration (i.e. one front and one back versus the rear one being placed more towards the middle), it's a PIA to maneuver the craft and you are paddling harder to get the job done compared to a single. The scenery along the route was decent. You could see a bit of the Shawnee Resort and Golf Course, an old stone bridge abutment in the middle of the river, under and along 80 and then when you get into the Water Gap itself with the high cliff sides. Very picturesque. Once you go under the old train viaduct in Portland, you give the office a call for the shuttle to meet you at the out point which is at the Portland Pedestrian Bridge. The whole experience was about four hours door to door to cover the ten miles on the water plus the shuttle to & from the pick up and drop off points. Lots of nice scenery, due to the low water level there wasn't much in the way of current except for the area around viaduqt in Portland and even that wasn't bad. I'm not a big fan of the equipment here but I wouldn't let that deter me from coming back in the future for one of their northern longer trips.
