Burrowing Owl Books was all I hoped for and more! Drawn in by the name, I spent four hours browsing the shelves, conversing with the owner, and reading in the various cozy chairs carefully places throughout the store. I was amazed by the owner, Dallas, who I overheard effortlessly engaging with customers throughout the morning--from specific titles to broad topics or just a vibe, Dallas knew where to direct them! She recommended a perfect book for me and for my nephews. Her knowledge and passion for books and pride in the store were evident in every conversation. Even the landlord was present and eager to share how far the building has come. Housed in a historic building that used to be a bank, the bookstore retains charming elements like the original safe, adding a unique touch to the atmosphere. Jack and Annie, the cleverly named resident parakeets, provided a delightful soundtrack of chirps to the browsing experience. Unsurprisingly, the decor features owls in every nook and cranny, and each room has cozy chairs inviting you to settle in with a good read. Burrowing Owl Books offers an impressive selection, from used and new books to puzzles, t-shirts, and bookish accessories--truly a one-stop shop for any reader. Dallas the owner was super nice and helpful, and gave me lots of suggestions of places to eat and visit in the next cities I was planning to visit on my road trip. The aroma of old books lured me in from the sidewalk! We had attentive service as everyone in our group found their favorite genres, and then plenty of uninterrupted browsing. There was an excellent variety in stock, and many of the used books were still up-to-date and in great condition. Don't miss the kids' room and reading area in the back! Great location in Canyon's square that offers a respectable selection of used fiction and nonfiction. The woman at the register was very knowledgeable and helped me locate what I was looking for. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a steady stream of customers milling about on a Saturday afternoon. I even overheard a man voicing his irritation that there wasn't an automotive section, since he needed to rewire his truck; as a result, he proceeded to (jocularly) wonder aloud how they could have no automotive section yet somehow carry Bill Clinton's autobiography. I'm a democrat originally from the north, so I was amused by the whole exchange. Such are the colorful and lively conversations you can only hear in an indie bookshop. Overall, Burrowing Owl is a much-needed addition to the bookstore desert known as greater Amarillo. read more
