After one memorable trip to San Diego, my love of cheap, Mexican food soared to astronomical heights. Slightly more authentic than your average Mexicalirosa's, but not so traditional as to take away its hangover curing capabilities, I had mapped out my plans to move west by the time I was on the plane ride home. While Burrito Jax isn't quite my favourite west coast potato-rolled taco dealer (if only...), I think late-night slices and poutines might be a thing of the past now that I've gotten to know the midnight glory of the burrito. There's not much to the space and I definitely wouldn't eat in (particularly because there aren't any chairs or tables), but I can't help but love the vibe. There were three guys in their early twenties behind the counter, jamming to great Canadian hip-hop off their own iPods, chatting with friends, and having a good time. Sure - I'd be annoyed if I were headed to a sit-down restaurant and this were the case, but c'mon...it was 11pm and I was at a burrito take-out joint. It was actually a nice touch to the character-less alternatives at Pizza Corner. I nabbed a veggie burrito and a steak one to go with all the fixins' mostly because I was too lazy to figure out what everything was. Among other things, I noticed lettuce, rice, smashed beans, a sweet potato spread, one of their four salsas options, cheese and the burrito sauce - a delicious blend of sour cream, garlic, lime and some spices that's not to be missed. With about six different burritos to choose from, four salsas, four finishing sauces, and both white and whole wheat wraps, it's easy to get exactly what you want. It was only about a five-to-ten minute wait for something made fresh and served piping hot from nice guys making the most of working until 3:30am. Pizza Corner's out...Burrito Blowers Street is in!

Steak or Chicken burrito -hard to choose

My husband has been meaning to go to Burrito Jax for a while. It's around the corner from his office. Fortunately for me, he waited until this weekend. Be warned... this is not a sit down restaurant. There are a couple of stools and a bench, and I did see a few people actually eating there. But mostly, the line - and there is usually a line, is for take out. The choices are awesome - 5 or six main ingredients from chicken (mild and spicy), beef, steak, pulled pork and vegetarian. And then comes the even harder part - choosing from 6 salsas, rice, refried beans, black beans, mashed sweet potatoes and lots of different sauces and filling s to choose from. I'm not sure how they actually get everything onto the soft tortilla in order to fold it all neatly and grill it. It was worth the wait! And I might mention, the price is pretty awesome too. Less than $6 for a small (maybe in Texas), it was beyond big enough for me. A great option for an inexpensive and healthful meal.

1/2 eaten... Couldn't wait

Great burrito's indeed! I call ahead, they make, I pickup and eat. Nom nom nom. For 6 bucks and change you can have a delicious lunch/dinner. Quality ingredients, fresh veggies, great selection of sauces and salsa. Only thing holding it back from 5 star is the fact that the burrito tends to be a bit soggy... maybe over-sauced.

Cod burrito bowl, pulled pork burrito

This would be my go to burrito place if it was in my neighbourhood. I had the cod burrito bowl - I was hesitant in ordering it as I wasn't sure if fish would satisfy my burrito bowl craving. But it did! The seasoning on the cod was perfect :)

First off, Burritos are great! So if you want a Burrito and you are downtown Halifax, Burrito Jax is the best choice. I mean, its the only choice so it wins by default. But what can you do. Liz S. was right about this place in her previous review. I have spent over six years visiting the Caribbean and have been all over Mexico. So I want the same as Liz; big Burrito for cheap and tons of stuff in it. But I think this newly created restaurant is trying to capitalize off of the fact that it is the only one downtown that is selling Burritos. Or their staff simply do not know how to make them. The one thing that killed me the most was the lack of guacamole in the Burrito! They use so little of it I thought there was an Avocado scarcity in the world and went online to check to see if CNN had reported anything. Okay I am exaggerating. But they really don't put a lot in their Burrito and I left feeling quite unsatisfied and moderately still hungry. Their staff are friendly enough but the cooks could be where the problem lies because if I was a Chef and knew what ingredients went into a good Burrito, I would speak up and fight for the best Burrito ever. But they either want to create their own, authentic Burrito that does not stack up to even some bad Burritos I have had in Mexico, or they simply don't know how to make a good one. But as I said before, if you have a Burrito craving, Burrito Jax's just might solve it. But it will depend on how but a craving you have.

Burrito Jax serves as more a Mexican deli than a restaurant to the hungry Blower Street shoppers. It's a great place to go for quick service, both ordering and receiving your food. Burritos are of course the speciality here, along with burrito salads, quesadillas and nachos. I've always admired Burrito Jax for the little catch phrases they use to describe their food, for example a burrito with everything on it is "All Jaxed Up". This phrase is misleading because some items that will cost you extra to put on your burrito, which was a bummer to this guacamole fan. The atmosphere of this little diner is very casual, perfect for a quick lunch or snack. If you enjoy fresh Mexican food or are looking for a Mexican food place that also does catering I would recommend Burrito Jax to you. Hot Hint: While Burrito Jax does offer delivery services in Metro Halifax, they only accept cash at the door so be prepared.

Honestly? I was super impressed by Habanero's. Considering my friend and I popped in about 30…read moreminutes into opening day, I was prepared for a) a lineup or longish waiting times and b) some confusion. I was pleasantly surprised to only have to wait a couple minutes to order, and the service was great. I decided to go for the 3 tacos for $7-something deal and my friend got nachos. I found the prices very reasonable - more so than Cheesecurds. I decided to experiment with 3 different tacos. Meat aside, I got the same toppings on all three with a little guidance from the servers: lettuce, cheese, corn salsa, medium salsa, guac, hot peppers and plain sour cream. I started off with a classic crispy taco with spiced taco beef. Then I tried a soft taco with pulled pork, and finished with a soft taco with fajita chicken. All 3 were delicious and really hit the spot, but the star of the show was most definitely the pulled pork. It was so flavourful. I've been thinking about it ever since and plan to make a trip back very soon. Maybe next time I'll try a lobster and shrimp taco too. My friend devoured her nachos - she was definitely a fan. The decor is fun and fresh. Mostly counter seating in addition to some picnic tables outside. Habanero's is a very welcome and needed addition to the Dartmouth dining scene. I can't wait to go back.

I'm a big fan of Mexican food, and thanks to my half-Mexican boyfriend (who lived in Mexico for 4…read moreyears), I have learned what actually constitutes "authentic Mexican food" and "Americanized Mexican food" and find myself on the lookout for the former whenever I have the chance. Unfortunately the choices in this category have been severely lacking in this city (with the exception of Mexico Lindo) until the past few months so when I heard Habaneros had opened up I couldn't wait to get my gringa culo in there to check out their ingredients. Well, clearly this place is consistent because I can definitely echo what everyone else has said about friendly and fast service - the guys behind the counter are super nice and I had my order within minutes (although there was only one person ahead of us so it not being busy I'm sure helped with this). Now that that's out of the way, onto the really important part - the ingredients. First of all, I was impressed that they had corn tortillas on the menu (definitely "authentic Mexican" as opposed to the more traditionally Americanized white flour tortilla), although I was disappointed to hear they only had them in hard/crunchy form, not soft. This is a tiny complaint though, because flour tortillas are still fine in my book and theirs were good. I just kinda hope they carry soft corn tortillas sometime in the future. I ordered a BBQ pulled pork and a fajita chicken soft taco, with pico de gallo, house-made salsa, corn salsa, lettuce, and lime-cilantro sour cream on top. OHMYFREAKINGODTHETOPPINGSWERESODELICIOUS! It seriously was all super-fresh and I loved the variety. The pulled pork was so good I couldn't get it into my mouth fast enough. The chicken wasn't as good - I liked it - it was tender and lots of flavour, but I found it was a bit too spicy (gringa, remember?) and just nothing...special. I think next time I would either get two pork, or try one of the beef ones (speaking of which, the beef is SHREDDED, not ground, which is 'authentic Mexican' as well and preferred by me, so that was nice to see). My particular favs were the pico de gallo and the sour cream (love that they added a few herbs to it rather than just serving it plain, which is fine but bor-ing). I made my order a combo, with a drink and tortilla chips, and it came to just over $10, which I think for the amount of food and fresh ingredients is quite reasonable. The chips were good too - a little salty, but def better than the generic, no-name ones that are clearly from a grocery store. I'm not sure when I'll be back here just because it's not close to my work or home, but I would actually go out of my way to stop by just because the ingredients and service are so good. Or they could just open a location in Clayton Park...*nudge-nudge*
