He also mixed in lots of hands-on learning, letting anyone on board touch or hold the crabs and fish he pulled from the traps or the many artifacts he had on board. We were also encouraged to give his sweet dog lots of petting and attention. He made sure to give us enough time to enjoy the fascinating and beautiful sites along the way - including a large pod of feeding dolphins. The stop at the island was magical and a great way to break up the journey. We enjoyed a little picnic and taking a long walk along the beach. The house tour is short and not very extensive, but we really enjoyed the tractor tour. A tractor pulls an open air trolley type car around the grounds where you can see the farmland, ponds, and wildlife (we saw a deer, alligators, turtles, and turkeys). It was interesting to hear the history of the land and crops. You won't want to skip this part. The gardens were very pretty. There were informative talks given by staff, and there were several exhibits in old slave quarters. These exhibits offer insights and history, and it is a lot to take it all in. Worth the visit if you are in town.
