Because we were back in Charleston again for Christmas this year, we decided to do it again with the same group, expecting a similar experience. Unfortunately, this year was a major disappointment. Our two guides seemed uninterested and disengaged, which really affected the overall experience. There was very little singing or holiday spirit, and it felt like they were just going through the motions. Given the cost, it felt like a waste of money. We will definitely return to Charleston in the future, but we would not do this sleigh ride again.

Please note that since the Fort is maintained by the National Park Service, Fort Sumter tours is the only authorized concessionaire to take you there. The overview and history provided by the two park rangers on board while we were steaming toward the artificial island was very interesting. There are no bathrooms on the fort or island, so the ferry boat is the only remaining option to use. You can also buy coffee and snacks on the boat. It was great to learn about the pivotal events that happened at the start of the Civil war. The NP rangers also gave an exposition of the different cannons present and damages suffered -- most of the original fort was destroyed. The visitor center in the island and on the mainland was nice and it was comfortable journey both ways. Be sure to bring a jacket to offset the freezing winds. Please learn and enjoy!

We met in front of Tommy Condon Irish Pub. There's a convenient parking garage across the street. Our reservation was Sunday at 9:30am. Free street parking on Sunday as long as you don't park in the one hour residential designated streets. Scott was our local tour guide for the historical tour of Charleston. He was on time. Before the tour started he informed everyone of the bathroom situation. On our two hours tour he made sure our group didn't block the narrow sidewalks. The historical tour included stops in front of - * St Philips church * Dock Theater * the Old Slave Mart * the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon * the harbor * the old city wall * Rainbow Row * Nathaniel Russell house The tour was a great way for us to familiarize ourselves with the historical district. I mean it's a haunted old beautiful city and I love it. Out of the three that I went on most recently I would say that Ghosts of the South and Ghosts of Charleston we'e both amazing, but Ghost Walk Charleston might be my secret favourite. The hosts of all of them were charismatic and fun and the prices are not bad at all. I don't recommend going in winter because it does get chilly around here at night. The heat of the summer can be a little bit too hot hot in SC, and it gets humid, so go in a moderate climate time of year like spring or fall - that, I think, is the most enjoyable.

A tractor pulls an open air trolley type car around the grounds where you can see the farmland, ponds, and wildlife (we saw a deer, alligators, turtles, and turkeys). It was interesting to hear the history of the land and crops. You won't want to skip this part. The gardens were very pretty. There were informative talks given by staff, and there were several exhibits in old slave quarters. These exhibits offer insights and history, and it is a lot to take it all in.
