It's very clear that Tina and her family love what they do and love their animals. Tina was incredibly informative and kind during the entire tour. The farm is pretty clean for being a farm , but definitely wear shoes that you're okay with getting a little dirty (they do give plastic covering). We've done 3 walking food tours prior to this one and were excited to add it to our list. There were many things we loved about this tour; Stanley's enthusiasm, the beautiful day and great walking weather, the folks we chatted with on the tour and *most* of the food. The tour was extremely slow to get going. We were all very hungry; eating small breakfasts and no morning snacks in anticipation of a heavy food afternoon. The tour began promptly at 12:30. We spent a very long time in the Convention Center talking about Frank Lloyd Wright. And then when we left the history part of the tour continued for an hour. The first tasting of any food did not happen until a little after 1:30. First stop was Merchant, a funky restaurant/bar, where we were served a Small quarter of a cuban sandwich and a tiny arugula salad dressed in vinaigrette. The Cubano was very good but the serving we seriously tiny. Then we lingered waaaay too long (in my opinion) at the Merchant sitting at the table even though everyone had been done for a while. After the merchant we made Lots of little stops to look at landmarks around the capital area. And we did a little walk through of the capital building, which was very beautiful, but my tummy was still rumbling!!!! 2:22 was our second stop at Fromagination Cheese Shop. This was an absolutely adorable shop with oodles of cheese as well as other gormete food stuffs like cookies, pastries, honey, balsamic vinegar, mustard, jams and jellies and other gift stuff . 3 small pieces of cheese and 2 crackers. There were also a few samples around the store for tasting but really it was a very small food sampling. Shortly after that around 2:44 we made it to Ian's Pizza for a half-slice of Mac and cheese pizza. Ehhh. Did not like it. They had some really cool other kinds and just an awesome menu in general. Just was not into the Mac and Cheese slice. Ick Next up was a little after 3:00 and we stopped at Himal Chuli which was a Nepalese eatery for a Mango Lassi. I was disappointed that we did not get to go inside the restaurant. We just grabbed-and-go our drinks and walked to our next stop. At around 3:17 we stopped into State Street Brats where we were served half to a third of a brat and A half pint of Spotted Cow beer from New Glarus Brewery. Good tasting. But again, a very small sample Lastly we walked to UW campus to the student union for a vanilla malt. It was good. Wish we had gotten to try the ice cream. I'm sure they have some great flavors there. The union was amazing however, right on the lake. Lucky students. The tour ran over, ending around 3:45. My husband and I left still feeling kind of hungry which has NEVER happened to us after a food tour. So, we had a fun time but left with mixed feelings about the tour. Our adventure began at Garver Feed Mill, where we picked up bikes and set off to discover Madison one bite at a time. What surprised me most was how much I learned about the city's history. Even after living here for more than a decade, I heard stories and facts about Madison that were completely new to me. The food stops were fantastic and showcased the diversity of Madison's local food scene: * Kosha Retreat - The kitchari and chai tea were incredibly comforting. The kitchari felt like a warm hug from grandma on a chilly day. * Roll Play - The spicy tteokkochi paired perfectly with the sweet peach lemonade. A delicious balance of heat and sweetness. * Buraka on Willy Street - The sampler plate was excellent, but the yuca fries stole the show. Easily some of the best I've ever had. * Starkweather Brewing - We enjoyed cauliflower wings, fried chickpeas, and a Helen Mule. The fresh-made sauces were absolutely delicious and elevated every bite. * Calliope Ice Cream - The aguapanela sorbet sounded unusual at first, but it was incredible. Think brown sugar lemonade in frozen form--refreshing, unique, and completely dairy-free. One of my favorite parts of the experience was being intentional about supporting local businesses. It's easy to get comfortable visiting the same places over and over, but this tour reminded me just how many amazing small businesses make Madison such a special city. We arrived at Milwaukee airport and having pre-booked a Badger Bus ticket to Madison, we caught the…read morebus outside the baggage claim area and were dropped off in Madison at East Johnson / East Gorham at N. Pinkney, which was a 10 min walk to our hotel, not far from the State Capitol. The reason I gave 4 stars is that had our flight been delayed, we may have missed the bus (The bus was scheduled for about an hour and 10 minutes after we landed) and being that tickets are non-refundable and that the next bus wouldn't have gotten us to our destination until 10pm-ish, we would have been in a pickle. We were sweating it a bit, but grateful that everything worked out. They should be a bit more flexible knowing that flights are prone to delays and cancellations. To find the bus stop at MKE airport... Walk out of the baggage claim door #2, and turn left. You will see a crosswalk. Proceed to the next island and you'll see the Badger Bus stop. (See my photo attached). Other bus companies also pull up here. Our Badger Bus was bright red and clearly marked, but I read that they can be black unmarked buses. Our bus was running a few minutes late due to traffic, however a bus driver on a different Badger Bus who was dropping off told us it was on its way. That put us at ease. Our driver was really great. We sat up front and the bus wasn't very busy, so after we told him we were visiting from out of state, he kindly gave us a bit of a narration and offered ideas of places to visit. After picking up a few other passengers in Milwaukee, including at the train station, we were on our way to Madison. It was a smooth, comfortable, air conditioned ride. I read about Sunflower Days in a recent summer piece on Madison, and was happy that my Madison…read morevisit coincided with opening weekend of this year's sunflower bloom. The sunflower bloom is definitely worth the trip and parking lot traffic and walk up the hill- it's simply amazing. Over 500,000 sunflowers will bloom in a one week period! There's a bit of an uphill climb to get from the parking areas to the sunflowers and the farmland, so expect that. This is a free event, so feel free to donate to the conservancy, cheapskates! There's as much or as little walking here as you want. Get a few pics of the sunflowers and go home, or walk around the whole sun field, walk past the oak savannah and prairie, or walk around the whole farm (which is quite a hike)! Bring water, bring a blanket, bring a picnic!
