The young lady at the counter tells me before I order there is a 30-40 minute wait on the food and while that sounds ridiculous, I drove all the way from Asheboro for one of their burgers because I already know it's worth the wait. No problem! The place is right off the main road and there's plenty of parking with additional parking in the rear. The inside appearance is that of a burger joint. Not too fancy but clean. I ordered the Jr. Cheeseburger with extra cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato, mustard and mayo, a Hot Dog all the way, Seasoned fries and a Sweet Tea. Their burgers are served hot and are cooked until the edges are "lacy" and crispy with just the right amount of seasoning. They use potato buns and they and are so fresh and grilled on one side which gives the burger additional good flavor. The fries are cooked perfectly, served hot and lightly seasoned. And you can get some of their homemade ranch to dip them in. I know they are known for their burgers but they also have AWESOME Hot Dogs! The weiner is grilled and again, the bun is grilled on one side, just makes your tongue all kind of happy. I ordered my hot dog "All the Way" aka "Carolina Style". The chili was good, the white slaw was fresh and light, onions added a hint of sweetness, and the mustard ties all of the flavors together in a well made, high quality hot dog. They also have really good sweet tea. Nicks has the BEST burgers and hot dogs in the Triangle area and I highly recommend but get there as soon as they open or you may find yourself waiting in line. The melted cheese was dripping over the sides, the bun was soft and fresh, and every bite just kept getting better. The fries deserved their own round of applause. Crispy, perfectly seasoned, and so addictive I kept telling myself, "Just one more"... about 30 fries ago. I don't know what kind of magic they're working back there, but they absolutely nailed it. This wasn't one of those burgers you eat because you're hungry--this was the kind you eat in complete silence because you're too busy enjoying every bite. On top of the amazing food, the service was just as impressive. The staff was friendly, welcoming, and made the whole experience even better. They also have covered outdoor picnic tables with fans running overhead, which was a really nice touch. My…read moreunderstanding is that there are 12 locations now, and that all are company spots - in fact, the company has very directly said that they are not currently offering franchise opportunities. The12 spots stretch from Jacksonville NC in the east to Hendersonville in the west! And there appear to be plans to expand into Greensboro, and perhaps Burlington. I like that these are company run operations, it can make quality controls matters easier to administer and monitor. Perhaps the biggest contributor to inconsistent quality at fast food chains is the quality control mandates are not vigorously enforced. The only major chain that I'm aware of that does insist standards be met is Jersey Mike's, and they have even suspended franchisee agreements of non- compliant stores. This is a very nice location, bright and shiny with easy access to drive thru or parking. I ordered two hot dogs, one with mustard and sauerkraut and one with mustard, chili, and onions. I don't order the combo here because I don't care for the FF. As usual the hot dogs were excellent, and I am becoming quite fond of the sauerkraut dog - the kraut has a nice bite to it. The pork spring rolls came out piping hot and were crunchy and flavorful! I got the meatloaf with ketchup, cheese grits and green beans. They give you a slab of meatloaf here! The recipe is perfectly seasoned and comes topped with onion straws. The green beans are cooked with bacon and onion and are full of flavor. The cheese grits were the cherry on top - they were creamy, they were cheesy, and they almost melted in your mouth. I brought my husband home a NY strip, onion rings and mac and cheese. The steak was cooked and seasoned well - he's an A1 guy and didn't put any on his steak. The onion rings were still crispy when I got home and seasoned well. He liked the mac and cheese best of all. The bacon was thick and had just a slight chew to it. Just the right amount of mayo and tomatoes cut to a good thickness. Hot dog was pretty great. They put a real generous amount of mustard *under* the frank then topped with chili and a nice creamy slaw. If the bun had been toasted it would have been darn near perfect. You have to understand, that I am a total burger snob. As a reference point, my favorite burger in the Piedmont Triad is Hops Burger Bar in Greensboro, and I'll drive the 20 miles and stand around waiting on a table for 30 minutes, at the first suggestion, no questions asked. Also way up there is/was Big Burger Spot, but they've now slipped into third place since Guy is no longer the owner and overseer and now that I've had the burgers at Thunder Road. First off, they will cook your burger to your desired doneness. For me, that's the minimum standard that a burger joint has to meet, and my medium-rare burgers have been spot-on every time. From there, the buns, the topping, the sides have always been fresh, tasty and again, done to order to meet my picky requests! "Can I get those tots crispy?" "Since I haven't tried it, can you put that sauce on the side?" "Can you cook that bacon crispy but not burnt?" Each request was met with something like a "You bet!" and the execution of the request was perfect. I really like that each table is equipped with a roll of paper towels and several condiments including the local Texas Pete, as well as salt, pepper, and some form of seasoning salt. Often when I see these things on tables in diners they are grimy and the table beneath then is sticky and dirty, but they make an extra effort to keep them clean and well stocked. For example, last week I grabbed the red bottle of Heinz ketchup, expecting that I would need to request a swap with a full bottle, but no, it was totally full! Just like when I was a kid, I love crunchy potato chips on my peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and I like fries with my ketchup! Let's face the facts that one of these days I'm bound to be disappointed in something, but from what I can see from the friendly and attentive staff, it's going to something I can overlook or that they'll be willing to address. Oh, that reminds me about the bathrooms! I often dread entering the men's room in a one-off diner or pub, but I was elated to find a clean and fresh smelling space that was well lit and well supplied. They've won us over. Last Saturday we bought three of our granddaughters, and today will be joined by my sister and brother-in-law, who are also locals and bound to become fans of Thunder Road Grill! As I re-read this before posting it, I wonder, why do I leave good reviews for places that I don't want to see become crowded and popular? Sometimes I question my sanity! So many places throw on one or two extra and call it a day, but this was a legit pickle situation. The crinkle-cut fries were seasoned and really good, the milkshake was decent, and the burger was solid overall. Nothing fancy, just classic fast-food comfort done well.
