What's your New Year resolution? Perhaps (like every year), it is to shed those holiday pounds. Maybe it is to spend more time with your family. Or, to write more Yelp reviews. Those are all great, but how about instead making an effort to volunteer or donate time/goods to a non-profit organization? They will benefit, you will feel good... everyone wins! The Burbank Temporary Aid Center is more than just a food bank; they are a non-profit providing various services to the poor or homeless such as: transportation assistance, utility assistance, showers for the homeless to get squeaky clean, medical assistance, etc. Plus, of course the much-needed food aspect. Whether you are a volunteer or someone seeking help, the Burbank Temporary Aid Center is at your service. Although I am going through financial strife myself, I had a few food and hygienic items I wanted to donate (donations are taken at the rear of the building from 9am-noon and then again from 1:30- 5pm). I walked into the center lobby, as I wasn't sure where to drop my donations off and was greeted by two women. Even more eye-popping? The facilities! Clean, modern, and gentle; it looked like a doctor's office. I've been to other food banks where you are surrounded by dirt and it makes you even more uncomfortable asking for help or volunteering. That is not the case at the Burbank Temporary Aid Center. Like the rest of Burbank, this is upper-middle class. Donating was quick and easy. There are volunteers available to help retrieve the goods from your car (they accept unopened cans, prepared foods, and hygienic products) and will also write you a receipt for tax deductions. You will be in and out in minutes, and will leave with the satisfaction of helping others. My major complaint is their limited service and attitude. The food pantry area was stocked with food more than my local Ralph's. I'm not talking expired 99 Cent Store goods, I'm talking Trader Joes and name-brand yummy goodies. Way better than I eat! I was specifically told that they only help Burbank residents. No wonder there is so much extra food! If you can afford to live in Burbank, you can afford to feed yourself. With all that extra food available, the Temporary Aid Center should perhaps expand to helping nearby North Hollywood residents. Isn't that what "helping" is about? Furthermore, the employees/volunteers have an attitude problem which really deters from me donating more to their organization. I clearly stated that I, myself, could use some help and they didn't even have any suggestions, merely based on my lack of Burbank citizenship. Furthermore, when calling them on the phone, they were very pretentious and cold in attitude, again merely because I was seeking information but live in North Hollywood versus Burbank. This is NOT in the spirit of giving and turns me off from wanting to donate my time or goods to them further. Sounds like I may have to continue to search for a positive place to donate my food products! Whether a New Year's resolution to help others or you just want to clean out your food cabinets, Burbank Temporary Aid Center may be your go-to non-profit. Remember: if you are seeking help, make sure you live in Burbank or otherwise they look down on you and don't care to help.

Can't believe they don't take unused baby formula. Ridiculous. Seems like a truly needed item.

They don't give you an 8 hour window where you are required to attend - the food collected goes to local food organizations to feed the homeless throughout LA - it's a great excuse to get outdoors & get some exercise! Motivation I love the entire concept of this organization. It is challenging for the impoverished to get access to fresh fruit and produce. A low income man in the Midwest a few months ago went to the hospital and was diagnosed with Scurvy! Yes, like the pirates illness. Why? He was only eating cheap, frozen meals 3x a day for the past 18 mos., no fruit or produce, and was severely vitamin C deficient! MDs diagnosis, not mine. Access to healthy fruits and veggies is critical to health but can be challenging given the expense. In comes hero organization Food Forward! They pair up with local home owners who have excess fruit or veggies. They have volunteers come out to "pick" their excess fruit. The fruit is then taken to local food banks in the area and distributed outward. How cool is that? I spent 1.5 hrs with them picking grapefruit in Woodland Hills. It was such a fun way to volunteer my time but manageable enough to fit into my schedule. I loved it and look forward to volunteer with this terrific organization again in the future. Check them out!

I got to work with them at their annual summer harvest at CSUN in Northridge, in two hours we gathered 5000 pounds of oranges to benefit MEND poverty in Pacoima, Family rescue center in Canoga Park, and Seeds of Hope in Los Angeles through the Episcopal Church. But the clothes on the ground were absolutely degrading and uncivilized. Like a slap in the face for any down and out person or anyone for that matter. Who picks up anything up off the ground unless it's trash to throw away. And some of the clothes were very beautiful. Many are seniors and or disabled and can't bend down either. I sure hope they did something about that clothing, shoes, etc. Tables would solve the problem. So depressing to experience a line of food, smiles and hope just to come to the end of the line to see clothes on the ground reminding people how bad it really is(some go back to tents on the ground, etc). Lines and the wait is very long so if you can't stand for long periods(like myself) - bring a rollator walker to sit on.

I went on Google and started doing some research when I came across Food on Foot. Wow. Before I even signed up, I knew that this was something to look forward to. This organization not only gives food to the homeless, but they really work with them to help them with housing and finding jobs. We even got to hear from former people who used to be homeless--they are called 'Graduates'. Their stories and their energy prove that this is such an impactful organization and everyone deserves to know about it and help out. It is $20 to donate, but you actually can see where your money is going. The staff were very informative and friendly. I had an amazing first experience and I will be volunteering a lot more often with Food on Foot.

Consumers in any given community are constantly encouraged to shop local in order to help the…read moresurrounding economy and the actual business owners whom are often residents, themselves. It is by far a better choice than the mega retailers. But here is an even more amazing concept: when the local business in question that is helped by the community also helps the community in turn and/or nonprofits. Now, THAT is the most splendid symbiotic relationship that could ever be conceived! This is exactly what is happening at Burbank's very own Studio Hope. Allow me to explain... Studio Hope is a combination thrift store/vintage store/antique store/gift shop at the Hollywood Way/Clark intersection not far from the Magnolia Park area of Burbank where these stores are a dime a dozen. However, Studio Hope stands out not only because it is located a few blocks away; but also because it is a business created to 'do good'. Owned and operated by Lori and Dean, a husband-and-wife team both suffering with kidney/renal issues; this dynamic duo initially founded (1) a kidney nonprofit that helps adults/families/children suffering from renal conditions and (2) an animal nonprofit to help orphaned pets find forever homes. In turn, they founded Studio Hope which rather than operate for a profit; revenues help fund the two non-profits. So, if you shop at Studio Hope you are supporting charities versus a billion-dollar company AND the local economy! The local buzz has been raving about Studio Hope but I wasn't able to check them out until the end of 2025 when bringing them my end-of-year donations (they accept donations and offer a receipt for your tax deductions). I was absolutely enthralled the moment I walked into the shop with its vintage/antique vibe and art collective. This place is less thrift store and more vintage - in the best way possible. Studio Hope offers amazing clothing (some modern and the BEST vintage finds!), purses, jewelry, shoes, housewares and furniture, trinkets, art, etc. Studio Hope isn't just a store: it is an experience and is heaven for lovers of all things vintage and antique. You would expect that these top-tier wares being sold at Studio Hope would fetch a pretty penny due to their own worth alone plus needing to be relatively comparative to competitors. Wrong! I was shocked to find some crush-worthy vintage at affordable prices and I am poor so my judgement can be trusted! Dean and Lori's Studio Hope does not screw patrons over. During my visit in which I purchased an adorable enamel ice cream cone pin; I successfully made a clothing donation and was thanked profusely while also being introduced to Lori. Lori is a doll: friendly, inclusive, conversational, humble and obviously appreciates each and every customer. This truly 'sells' the business even more making one want to return to Studio Hope. Studio Hope is also 'cool' as they work with the local film studios and host events like "Bridgerton" viewing parties. They also utilize their store for work with their charities such as the 'prom' they put on for the teens part of their kidney nonprofit allowing them to choose among the store's gowns. Studio Hope is truly compassionate. My only complaint is that it is street-meter parking only which is a bit annoying when schlepping donations and unable to catch a close meter but Studio Hope is worth contending with this 'grievance'. If you love vintage/antiques AND want to feel good about where your dollar ends up then Studio Hope is for you and an absolute must-visit! Make sure to hi to Lori!
