We've been going to Zizzi's in Romford on and off for lots of celebrations over the past few…read moremonths. Our wedding anniversary on New Year's eve, Mother's day in March, my birthday in April and now Father's day - 16th June. We had originally planned to take advantage of the Father's day special 3 course menu for £19.99 each (Zizzi's do these deal quite a lot, if you get on the mailing list you can get notifications and vouchers throughout the year)! We decided not to partake in the three courses as we had to go elsewhere after our meal. We booked ahead for a 1pm reservation, and got there 15 minutes early. We were seated straight away with a smile from the manager. And were seated in a nice quiet spot next to another couple and close to the open kitchens and toilets. We sat and decided what we'd like and a waiter came along very quickly to take our order, within 5 to 10 minutes! So we gave him our order straight away without much of a wait. I ordered a pollo prosciutto insalata and a lemon san pellegrino. Elle ordered a super zucca insalata with chicken skewers and a coke. Our drinks came almost immediately after ordering and we sat and had an interesting conversation while waiting for our food. Compared to a few years ago Zizzi's Romford has changed its decor; previously they had an artist paint his impressions of Romford as murals on their walls, (I see a previous reviewer didn't understand "the graphitti" on the walls, maybe this will help them understand?) specifically Romford is famous for its greyhound racing track (for 90 years - founded in 1929), one of the last left in England. The art on the walls depicts greyhounds in various racing poses. They actually had a few signs saying what the artwork was and who the artist was who created it, but I digress. The new decor, similarly are murals from a local artist of deer and hummingbirds. (see pics) They look very nice, maybe not to everyone's tastes but I like them. Anyhow....Food. We get the food within 15 minutes, and it's delicious! I really enjoyed my food and finished very quickly. I seem to be taking a lot of pictures of empty plates recently....Elle enjoyed her food too. We ended spending £32 or so. We will definitely be going back, we may try a different branch for our next visit.

Main: ...But if you're going to put skinny pizzas on the the menu that include an "Italian naked slaw" maaaaaybe add a little more info... The skinny primavera pizza was really nice - the wholemeal base has come on in leaps and bounds and was actually delicious. The "Italian naked slaw" however turned out to be an old looking pile of greens (mostly rocket), topped with some aged looking fennel and a crap load of beetroot. Fennel and beetroot. Surely that cannot be a thing, Italy?? And in no way can that monstrosity be a 'slaw - naked or dressed to the nines. Doesn't help that I hate beetroot with a passion. Replaced with a normal side salad which was much much better. Dessert: Lemon ice cream concoction and an Irish coffee. Neither were the best I'd ever had and I normally rate Zizzi's Irish coffees (this one had too much cream and wasn't hot enough FYI). We had a tastecard which we were planning on using - until we heard our waiter tell the table next door that tables had to be booked two hours in advance to use them. We never booked. Who books Zizzi's 6:30pm on a Monday night?? We used the tastecard via another waitress. SO HE LIED! All in all, a poor representation of a Zizzi's. And WHAT ON EARTH is that graffiti about outside the restaurant? Will you look at that - I was only going to write a basic review and it turned into a rant...that's what happens if you mess with my 'slaw!!!

The olives are amazing and the panettone for Christmas was delicious. To begin with, the service was very slow. From the beginning, even just getting wine and water seemed to take too long. Then we had to wait 30 minutes to order food and then another 30 minutes to receive our appetizers. By this time we had been at the restaurant for over an hour. The main course took about 30 minutes to arrive, as well, which would have been okay if we weren't already a bit annoyed with the slow service. I'm not sure if they were understaffed (it was fairly busy, especially for a Wednesday night) but the staff just seemed to disappear sometimes. The food itself was also subpar and a disappointment. Italian food is wonderful and full of great flavors - all the food we had was bland. We had fried calamari that was chewy and, although the calamari seemed fresh, the batter didn't taste of anything. It seemed like neither the calamari nor the batter had been seasoned. My partner's fish was okay but again, seemed under-seasoned, and my pasta was also just bland. Everything lacked any sort of distinction and, considering how good the items in the store are, this was a real disappointment. I think if we hadn't been there with a 50% promotion we would have been really upset. We were hoping to find a new neighborhood spot but this, sadly, won't be it.

Cut to my very large "snack" sandwich. It actually did travel well. It took me a bit to get back to my hotel and then a little longer to sit down and eat it. Don't worry, I tried a bite when I first got it as a base line for later. I held up OK. Obviously it is best when it is first toasted/pressed but it was decent as take away as well. For about $11, a steal for a meal! Gastronomica also has a little stand in another location within Borough Market where they sell sweets. Wanting to end my food journey with something sweet I opted for 2 mini cannolis: vanilla and pistachio. The vanilla was really sugary sweet. It took a minute to eat it even thought it was small. The pistachio was less sweet but even with the end covered in real pistachios, I missed the pistachio flavor. Perhaps my tastebuds were tired after all of the different food.

The family who owns this restaurant are adorable! We ate here twice in our 10 day stay and had different dishes each time. The fettuccine alfredo is wonderful. It's always nice to go to a restaurant where the owner fusses about the tables ensuring that everyone is enjoying the food.
