Deep inside Makati is a bar whose long story could be told by looking at it just once. Tales of its glory days are still evident in its interiors. Today, it is a shell of its former self--but--let's take a look at this shell. It still looks kind of interesting.
Bunchum's is part of the Japanese complex called Little Tokyo in Makati. It says "Coffee and Jazz" on the signage. But there are no jazz performances there. Actually, they don't play jazz music at all. The place is dark and dilapidated. A closer look though and you can see the quirkiness of the place. There are a lot of vintage furniture and items all over the place. None of them match but the randomness seems to create its own character.
The food is cheap and so are the drinks. It serves regular Pinoy bar chow, but one will notice the Little Tokyo influence. You will sometimes spot okonomiyaki and other Japanese dishes in there.
According to a friend of mine, her dad used to hang out there a lot, and in fact, it was a popular bar that his friends and their circles would go to. I knew this bar had a colorful past. The typical Makati person would probably not even give this establishment light of day upon seeing how run-down the place is, but for me, it has more character than most of the stiff establishments around the city. read more
