My mom is English and so we would have occasional English foods growing up. One of those was kippered herring. I know, it sounds weird. It's okay, you'll get over it because it's tasty stuff.
Sometimes cooked or served with eggs. Today I had the craving for them on toast. I had been expecting them in the "International" but was able to find two cans of these "seafood snacks" in the canned meat/tuna section of our Publix Supermarket.
Outer plastic wrapper, inner can that opens easily. I remember when you needed to use a key to turn them open but now it's a simple pop top that peels lengthwise along the can.
Inside, about 3/4 filled with smoked herring. Just spread it on toast like you would with cream cheese I suppose. It was perfect and definitely reminded me of what Mom used to serve us back in the day.
My label of ingredients just says, "Herring fillets, water, salt, natural smoke flavoring, sodium hexametaphosphate*." And in case it wasn't clear, "Contains: Herring." There's a decent amount of sodium in a can but it's a treat so enjoy in moderation.
