Our server was very friendly and conversational and recommended some of their best meals. We went with the elk ravioli and lasagna. The ravioli was good but the lasagna was very oily which was a bit off-putting. First of all, we were thrilled to see it was open, as so many of West Yellowstone's restaurants had already closed for the season. It was a real neighborhood kind of a place, and by that I mean totally unpretentious and without any of the foo-foo fanciness that pops up in resort towns now and again. Their menu was solid -and concentrated on burgers, sandwiches, steaks, local elk, bison and walleye, and Italian Pasta with a "Montana Twist". More on that soon. We started off with a complimentary basket of house baked bread that was so good it just about disappeared in ten minutes. I felt like having a beer, so checked out their beer list of local beers before choosing a Halo Huckleberry Hefe ($6) by Lewis and Clark Brewing of Helena, Montana. Huckleberry is a local specialty, and nearly every gift shop sold jam, jelly, honey, and candies made from it. We both love Italian food, so we zeroed in on those Italian Pasta with a Montana Twist specialties. My wife chose the Bolognese ($23.99) for "Elk and bison meat sauce tossed with rigatoni pasta and topped with shaved Parmesan cheese." I went with the Meatballs ($24.99) for "Elk and bison meatballs tossed with bucatini pasta and house-made marinara sauce". Wowie... were both dishes great. The Elk and Bison tasted pretty close to beef, and I have to say my meatballs were excellent. I tried a bite of the Rigatoni Bolognese and it was also excellent. The house made marinara was a standout. Our server Emily was a charmer and really enhanced our dining experience. Left the park late and was looking for a hot meal. We came across Bullwinkles. Only about a five minute wait which wasn't bad. The sweet hostess brought us to our table and delivered water as well. The Resturant was clean and inviting. We ordered a side salad to share which was fresh and quite large. The blu cheese dressing was a ten, thick with chunks of cheese. I ordered a burger with fries. They claim all burgers come medium but mine was well ( dry) on a nice bun. The French fries were cooked to perfection. My husband ordered the open faced 10 oz rib eye steak sandwich. Went to the bar portion of this restaurant shortly after arriving in West Yellowstone on a Tuesday afternoon. Great place to grab a beer and watch sports - about 7-8 large TVs throughout the bar area (maybe more). Very casual atmosphere. The bartender, April, was not friendly or welcoming - but maybe she was just having a bad day. Nevertheless, we still enjoyed our time here. We tried the Spinach & Artichoke dip along with the Roasted Mushroom Bruschetta appetizer, both were absolutely delicious and great to share. The dip was very rich. We literally came in at 10:24 and there was clearly a sign that said they stopped serving food at 10:30. We knew if we were lucky enough to be served, we would get something awful. But, Matt the bartender absolutely hooked us up. He said nothing was off the table to order. We ordered the Elk Ravioli and Bison/Elk lasagna. We went for steaks. I ordered a filet and it was ordered medium rare. It was overcooked and dried out but had good flavor. Salad is not an option for a side. My son ordered the ribeye and it lacked flavor and was also overcooked. My daughter ordered the bolognese and the pasta was overcooked and seemed to have not been freshly cooked. We have eaten here a few times over the last 10 years and it's always been good. Their recent changes are over the top. We came on a Friday night and got seated right away. They had my favorite whisky available and a very good wine list. We started with the duck wing appetizers and they were great. On another day with a salad and this would be my go-to. Then two in our party had the elk ravioli and my hubs and I had the elk osso buco. After the first bites the table was moaning. Just excellent. Came here visiting Yellowstone and Island Park during Xmas break. Was craving something other than beef and Montana is known for Bison and Elk meat. Went ahead and took a leap of faith and ordered the Elk steak, the picture below. The Elk steak tasted better than most beef steaks. Had less marbling, but had so much flavor, perfectly cooked medium rare. I would absolutely try elk again and may order steaks to be sent to my home. Service was also outstanding. I hate to give low stars but service was not stellar and could not award higher. Came here with a coworker as it was suggested by the hotel and it was down the block. Walked in to a few people ahead of us, the hostess was like a chicken with her head cut off. She would walk up to the counter look at a list then walk away. She did this about 5 times and never once asked us how many people were in our party. Then another party of about 4 came in 5 mins after us. So while standing there and never acknowledged, I walked up and put my own name on the list and lady behind me made a throat clearing sound of disgust because she thought she was going to be seated before is. Took the hostess about another 5 mins before we got seated. Since it took so long we already knew what we wanted. I got the Elk raviolis. The portion was huge, could have shared. When I say they are stuffed, that is an over statement. They did have a lot of filling in them and that was great. The sauce was nice and creamy but not to thick. The hospitality is off the chain. The two employees running the bar and restaurant were attentive to everyone and worked great as a team. We came here twice while we were in town because the meat loaf is that good. Prices are just right, and the staff are rockstars. The atmosphere is primarily a bar, so do keep this in mind if you are passing through. Music is a little louder but it's fun. Second night it wasn't as loud. The food is great! The meatloaf is a must. I recommend the gravy of the side just in case. But the flavor is fantastic. This is a lean beef and bison mixture with balance herb and pepper seasoning, with a little bit of minced veg mixed in. Solid solid dish! The bison short ribs are melt in your mouth good. The meat falls right off the bone. There really no other way a short rib should be. Other great dishes include the roast duck that I really had my eye on, but it so popular they didn't have the ingredients in house. The elk ravioli was another stand out dish on the menu. The food service was timely and the food was perfect temperature. Kitchen staff didn't miss a beat, even at peak hours. Everything remained under control. If you have mobility issues or traveling with someone who does-This is not the place for you. There is a sign regarding disability access & parking but no luck finding them. There are several seats designated Handicap but they are only for casino patrons. No assistance from employees so we went elsewhere. We were in Yellowstone 2 weeks ago and I was researching a fun, western themed restaurant. The website gave a few recommendations, but Bullwinkle's Saloon caught my attention! It had such a homey vibe, with its Western decor, but also beautifully decorated for Autumn. We were sat pretty fast although the saloon was quite busy. The food was absolute comfort food! Delicious! My Mom had the elk chili which was very tasty. My Dad enjoyed his burger and I wasn't so hungry so I asked for chicken fingers and French fries. It was on the children's menu but I told our waitress, Janelle, that we would pay full price. The huckleberry lemonade paired well with our dinners. Janelle was very nice and attentive. When we received the bill we saw she had included the kids meal price which was definitely not necessary, but very nice! Bullwinkle's Saloon had both a liquor store and casino attached to the restaurant. The food was delicious and the bar was known as "Rocky's"! I loved the friendly, western vibe! I'm a physician and have eaten here once before without issue; I had their elk osso buco. On a recent visit, I ordered the elk ravioli. After the first bite, something tasted off. After a second bite, I knew something was wrong and returned the dish immediately, feeling I would be sick if I continued. I became nauseous and vomited within 20 minutes in their bathroom, a textbook case of food-borne illness from a preformed toxin, likely Staphylococcus aureus or Bacillus cereus. These toxins survive cooking and typically cause illness when food is improperly handled, left at room temperature, or contaminated during plating, even if "freshly prepared." When I raised the issue, the waitress brushed it off, saying "I don't really like the elk ravioli either." She gave me a deer-in-the-headlights look when I said her response was inappropriate. The owner, while I was in their restroom vomiting, told my mother I needed an allergy shot, despite the fact that I have no food allergies and had eaten elk there before (elk osso buco). That response was medically inaccurate and dismissive, especially given the owner claimed to have a degree in microbiology and used this as a justification to dismiss my concern when I spoke with her myself about the issue. I'll be filing a report with the health department. I'm sharing this to help protect other diners and encourage better food safety practices at this establishment. read more

One of our long time favorites in west Yellowstone. However, this last visit was well below what we expected. My wife ordered the trout and I ordered the 8oz filet. I like my steak medium rare and that is how I ordered it. It came out medium well. Not only was it over cooked but it was very tough. Not what I expected. My wife's fish was very dry and over cooked as well. So we will put this on the bottom of our list for now and won't be returning anytime soon. The one thing you can count on here is that for a couple, you are not getting out the door for under $100 without any alcohol included. Pretty good restaurant for a tourist town! Since we were in West Yellowstone, we had to try some of the local meats. We ordered the cheeseburger and substituted the regular patty with a Montana patty (60% bison & 40% elk). The meat was very lean and lightly seasoned so you can taste the natural flavor. It came with a side of fries that were perfectly crispy. I also got a garden salad and it was very fresh--no limpy lettuce. Bullwinkles is a restaurant bar and casino. The restaurant portion was packed with a very long waitlist, so we decided to sit at one of the high top tables on the bar side that had a bunch of slot machines. We had been visiting Yellowstone and were very hungry after a day of sightseeing so we came here for dinner. The service and food was fantastic. I ordered the huckleberry margarita with sugar rim. It was delicious! The guys ordered a local beer and enjoyed it with their bison burger. Their burger was topped with bacon and caramelized onions. It was a really big burger and a very juicy burger. It sat next to a bed of fries. I highly recommend that burger if you are hungry. I ordered the bison lasagna and I can't say enough how amazing it was. It had just the right amount of everything in it. I had extra to take home and enjoy later. Bullwinkles was recommended to us by the girl at the Jerky Store. Glad we took her up on it! Saturday night we sat at the bar and Cody "Mercer" was the bartender. He was super personable, had a lot of Yellowstone area tips and was just an all around great guy! We had some poutine to start, then followed up with Cody's recommendation of Broasted Chicken. Hands down the best chicken I've had! The huckleberry margaritas are also super tasty! We headed back again Sunday after our second Yellowstone outing. Melanie was the bartender that night and she was friendly and attentive. We went back because my husband wanted to try the Elk Raviolis (a local favorite). He said they were delicious! I opted for the Sunday Special: Chicken and ribs. The meal was so big I took some home and we both ate it for lunch the next day! Food here is great! Staff is friendly and on top of things. We had an awesome experience at Bullwinkles. We had a little bit of a wait to get a table, but it was worth it. After spending several days in JH with food that was a bit too eclectic for our tastes. Bulwinkles was just what we needed. Trent was our waiter the first night and despite his multiple table section, he was funny, efficient and the best waiter we have had on this trip. When I complimented his service, he said he couldn't do it without the kitchen, giving all the credit to the kitchen. The bar was quick with our drinks and the kitchen was fast with our food. I just left here, and it was incredible! First of all, the owner's wife was there to greet us and was so friendly and sat us in the back where it was quiet with our baby. Then, our waitress was amazing. She was fast, and super friendly. The owners wife came to check on us multiple times and made us feel like family! The place was clean and although it was busy it was homey! The bar and casino are separate from the restaurant so it was family friendly! And, last but CERTAINLY not least: the food was amazing! From the fresh bread at the table, to our entrees! I ordered the Elk Osso Bucco, while my husband got the elk ravioli. Both were AMAZING. Our group thoroughly enjoyed our first visit here. The restaurant has a fairly typical MT vibe, however; they have one unique feature...a model train that rides around the place near the ceiling. Who doesn't like that? Myself and another in our group had the trout almondine with veggies and couscous. I liked the flash fried preparation. It did make the fish a bit dry on the outside, but still moist enough on the inside. Also, their tartar sauce amped up the flavor. The broccoli was steamed crisp, and the couscous was delightful. It was a bit different side dish. I tried my wife's pork ribs, which were delecious. And my friend who had the bison/beef mixed meatloaf said it was the best meatloaf he ever had.
