My sweetie and I took the Sharktooth Island Tour out of the Bull River Marina!!!! It was the perfect ending to our Savannah trip! The 20 min or so boat ride to the island was so enjoyable and we got to see some good wildlife and low country scenery. Once at the island we had all the equipment we needed from our guide (shovels, strainers, etc) EXCEPT I do recommend you bring a small baggie or something to put your treasures in! Be prepared to get wet and possibly covered in good old Georgia clay...but in the best way...I found the whole experience of slogging around hunting for shark teeth and other fossils so enjoyable! Hot tip: we saw people having huge success with little teeth just straight ahead of where the boat drops You off. However, we headed for the large dry sand "cliffs" and chipped our way along the shell ribbons we saw there...that's where I found my largest finds! Water shoes were nice for a bit but I don't recommend them if you start wandering out where there is clay they will get sucked in there and right off your foot lol. Also...you get fantastic views of the shipping container ships coming and going as you hunt on the island! They are huge it's such a treat to be that close. That said, if you are knee deep in the water when they come by...there is a storing current that pulls water out away from the shore...and after they pass that water comes back...fast. I was not prepared for that when I took the lower tide opportunity to run out and dig around, so when the water came rushing back i had to bend over and brace myself on all fours. Not dangerous....just hilarious...but maybe a little less hilarious for someone not super comfortable with water or being knocked about in the water so fair warning. I found a good half dozen teeth and a cute shell. I also spent a good amount of times catching the little crabs and playing with them! We took bottles of water with us and that was nice to have as you are there for a good bit. The boat ride home was just icing on the cake! We got to see dolphins (one came right up to inspect us) and some other great birds. The captain made sure to go out of the way to steer around to drive us closer when great wildlife opportunities presented themselves! I highly recommend this as a singles, couples, or family experience! read more

Having recently watched a TikTok about hunting for sharks teeth, the lovely Spensyr K. and I opted to try it for ourselves. Bull River Marina is a short trip outside Savannah, so it was turned into part of our exit plan. We jumped on a small boat with a friendly first mate and a knowledgeable captain who gave us a brief history of the Savannah River expansion project, and how we'd be digging through the recently dredged river bottom. The trip out was quick and uneventful so in no time we were mucking about and having a grand old time. We found a couple fossils and quite a few sharks teeth before it was time to go back escorted by a pod of dolphins rolling all around the boat. Cool little day trip, you should do it. read more

We were pretty disappointed overall because the description was extremely misleading. It states on the package "Join our expert guides as we explore the coastal waters, searching for fossilized shark teeth and other remarkable marine artifacts." We assumed this meant we would get information from the "expert guides" and that they would be on the island to help out. They gave us no information about the area, the island, or sharks. They boated us over and dropped off us and returned three hours later to pick us up. It says 20% gratuity is REQUIRED but I'm not sure what for. We already pay a hefty price just to get boated over, I am not sure what the tip would be for. I would have been more inclined to give more if more was actually done. As for the island, we only found about 8 shark teeth. It may have been an off day, but overall this was not what we expected. read more

We had a charter with Bull River Marina during a girls trip to Savannah- and I highly recommend! It was a quick uber ride from the Historic District, where we were staying, and easy to find once we got there! Their little building comes equipped with drinks, snacks, and other boat/beach items to purchase. Willie and his team were more than friendly and helped us take everything to our boat and get us set up. Between the fun music, the great atmosphere, the fun drinking games we had a blast! We were able to dock our boat and get out and swim. Sadly, the weather turned rainy and cold and we had to end our charter early, but we were having such a great time that before that happened, they agreed to extend our reservation for an extra 30 minutes! My wife and I had a fishing trip with Captain Willy yesterday, and it was amazing. We're essentially novices and hadn't caught a single fish in several initial outings, but Willy took us to some good spots, where we finally pulled in four or five sheepshead. His coaching on technique was invaluable. They're not easy fish to catch and this is a low period for every type of fish, so we were very happy (and excited). He also helped us harvest a couple of bushels of oysters on the way back, so the evening was a feast for us and a couple of friends. It was a great experience all around. SHARK TOOTH EXCURSION - AVOID THIS TOURIST TRAP I WOULD RATE IT ZERO IF I COULD. We had three Grandsons (ages 14, 12, and10) in town for a week and thought they might enjoy this. Big mistake on our part. They take you to a section of Jones Island on the Savannah River that they call "Shark Tooth Island". This is the island you can see from Tybee Road where they are dumping the river dredgings. This is not the island the locals refer to as Shark Tooth Island. They drop you off in an area of thick, sticky black clay mud that you have to walk over without loosing your shoes or falling down. Then though a thick mound of tall scrub grass. You then enter a narrow shelf of hard packed sand that is about 150 ft by 100 ft with a hard sand wall on the back side. The area has been picked clean of shark teeth. We dug into the sand wall for several hours and found 2 very small teeth. We also found two small teeth around the hard sand after about three hours. There is no beach. To get to the river you have to walk over the slick black clay mud which extends out in the river. There was a small area to the east that people found a few teeth but it was impossible for us to get there with the children because of the river mud. After they kept slipping and falling down in the mud we gave that up. The 12 and 10 year-old lost interest after about 30 minutes and sat the rest of the time under some small scrub bushes along the hillside, which was the only shade. The trip is supposed to last about 3 hours, we ended up standing in the sun for over 4 hours because the boat was an hour late in picking us up. The guide with us was a very nice young lady but was of no help with advice on finding teeth or doing anything to help us keep the children involved. DO NOT BRING CHILDREN UNDER 14 ON THIS TOUR. The final insult was after spending almost $400 for this terrible experience, the boat captain and staff expected a 20% tip. read more

We booked a shark tooth excursion for my wife and myself. One of the worse experiences ever. We did not exactly know what to expect, however, we expected more. Your paying for a very expensive boat ride to the rivers edge. In our experience, they literally left our group, with no guide, no instruction, nothing. We were told it was a busy day, and Sara our guide was needed for the next charter. So the boat pulled up we got off, and they were gone. The only thing that the Captain Buddy said before he pulled away was stay away from the water due to currents. out of 17 people, the total teeth that were found, maybe 10 small teeth. The beach was picked clean. Sara was later brought back to the river with a second group, when the first group (our group) requested to leave early. But she was not able to get a hold of buddy the captain. Which brings up the next point, The crew cant even reach the captain, how can we? What if there was an emergency? There is no help. When the boat finally arrived (not early), the first group boarded. The weight in the boat was not distributed and was leaning to one side, we went on anyway. On the way back, we came to a police boat. Captain Buddy began repeating to himself, " Don't pull us, don't pull us, don't pull us" sure enough the police boat flagged him to slow. It was clear the two knew each other, the officer asked, "how many is your boat rated for?" Obviously he knew the answer to his question. Buddy yelled "17". this did not include him and Sara, making it 19. The police officer mentioned he was looking a bit over the limit, but let him go with a warning. Point is , they knew exactly how many they booked, and the limits of this small boat, but had no regard to safety at all. It was overcrowded and over weight. Very dangerous. And not enough life jackets if something were to happen in waters with strong currents that they openly warned us about. Lastly, They expect a tip, in fact they require a tip. Nope. Not a single party on this trip tipped. There is no way in hell I would give this crew another dime. STAY AWAY. read more

We booked the Shark Tooth Island, fossil hunting boat trip. They took us on their boat, was about 15-20 minutes to the island. They dropped us off and we were on our own. Definitely be prepared with snack or drink and go to the bathroom beforehand :) Within the first five minutes we found our first 2 teeth! The whole family found at least 20 teeth each, we found over 70 teeth, we found so many we were helping another group find teeth. We even found a Megalodon tooth!!!! We also found whale bone and horse teeth and more! We went looking for fossils, and we sure did find some! Great experience! read more

Everything was fine until we got the bill. Husband and I used the Bull River Marina for the first time to travel form Savannah to Dafusukie for a day trip. Booked in advance on the phone with the reservationist. We were not made aware by the reservation agent that if the taxi did not have 3 + passengers that we would be charged for 4 tickets for each leg of travel (double). If we had been made aware of this fact, we would have gladly chosen different times/day when the boat had more passengers or even chosen to take the ferry out of Hilton Head if no full boats were available. We did not review the emailed receipt, as we didn't believe I needed to do that, as the reservationist seemed trustworthy. Our mistake on that. Took the trip with very pleasant and competent sailors and on the way, it was just the two of us (ignorantly blissful we were paying for 4 tickets). On the way back, there were two other additional passengers on the return trip. The next day I was reviewing our credit card and discovered we had been charged for 8 tickets for the round trip. We called the Marina to find out what the issue was and were told of the 3-person minimum for trips. We mentioned that we had not been advised of this policy upon booking (as we would have changed our times/days) and also, if this was the policy, why were we charged for 4 tickets when there were four passengers on the return trip - We were told the minimum boat person charge was on the website (we had gotten a recommendation from a fisherman) and the the fact that we were charged extra for the trip that had 4 people in the boat was a "clerical error." We feel we have been taken advantage of and will never use this Marina for any service of any kind again. It's too bad that we needed to write this note, as we want to support independent businesses, but not when they use deceptive practices. read more

Friendly services we just had bad experience and bad luck. First time out for a half day rental. boat battery dies on us. We get towed back. The guy that towed us back extremely friendly and made the tow back fun. When we get back to the Marina the lady at the front made it feel like it was our fault and that we could possibly have to pay a tow fee. The manger talks to us and said we were not at fault and said we can reschedule at no costs. Second time: the boats were out for maintenance we were not notified until the evening prior and that was only because I call them to verify our reservation. I was told I would get a call when boats will be back up. I call back 10 days later, boats are ready now, again would not have known if I never called. 3rd time: the manger books us for the 21st. Wife looks at the weather and decides Sunday would be better to go out. Had to leave a voicemail to try to change dates. Get no call back or email saying that got our message was received and if dates could be move or not. I Call back morning of 21st. The lady working at the desk was not tracking our reservation for the 21st or the request to change dates. Said we would get a call back to see what they can do. I call them back few hours later. Talk to the manger she said she could reschedule us for Sunday. I was already frustrated because it this point I felt like we keep being put on the back burner since I'm the one that had to constantly follow up on everything. Told the manger I just wanted my money back at this point. I was told I can only get half back since we technically went out the first time (being told that got me upset because it was a stressful situation with the boat dying on us) and we can get a discount for any of their services in the future. Honestly this was a good offered but At this point I was already fed up and just wanted to cut my ties with this company. Not a bad place just had bad luck I guess. Customer services is good to an extent I just didn't appreciate the fact we weren't a priority to them. It is what it is. This place is absolutely fantastic. Gina squared us away with our short safety video and really helped us before we went out to the boat. And then Bud quickly showed us how to operate the boat. I bet he has some great stories to tell. My wife and I rented a whaler for a few hours and enjoyed every moment of it. We saw a pair of dolphins and a big fat manatee stick his nose out and follow us for a short while. We stayed a lil closer to the bank than the middle because it just seemed that was where the action happens. This small, laid back marina is located just before the bridge to Tybee Island, on the right hand side of the road. After you pass it the first time, turn around at Fort Pulaski. Then drive back and forth a couple of times until you identify the small gap in the wall in front of what appears to be a block of condos. Park in the marina parking zone and walk around the condo building. There it is! This is not some high-class marina with a Hatteras dealer and guys in white pants and blazers. This is just an old building with some old boats and some cool guys and cold candy bars in a fridge. We showed up having failed to book far enough ahead to get an eco-tour at Hilton Head. Plan B was to rent kayaks and paddle randomly around the Marsh, wishing we had a guide. But, at least we'd be outside. And, we wouldn't need our calves very much, which was important because our calves were out of service from the previous day's visit to the Tybee Island Lighthouse. It turns out they did have guide - they run tours every couple of hours if people show up and ask for them, and one would be back in 20 minutes. Great! Bill, our guide, ensured we got into our boats without falling in the water and then led us across the wide channel to the marsh. This was probably the highlight of our (amazing) trip to Savannah. It was quiet and peaceful out on the water. The marsh itself was a surreal wonderland of wildlife and quiet bird and water noises. We really needed this. I do not know much about nature, but my wife does. Bill alternated between answering her extremely smart questions that I couldn't even understand, and my extremely du... basic questions which my wife couldn't even believe. She learned lots of interesting things about the habits of animals and birds I cannot identify. I learned that a marsh is not the same as a swamp because the water is not stagnant. I also learned that the whole marsh pretty much comes from the grass and the currents. The grass grows up, gets old, dies, and turns into food for all sorts of animals and birds and stuff. It's amazing. And, beautiful. That scuzzy pond-scum that coats the water near the grass? Yeah, that's grass that died and started to dissolve. It's food for little water things, now. Who knew? If you go to this area you absolutely must take a kayak out on the marshes. Bull River is great because they are knowledgeable, laid back, and take their time to help you really understand the marsh. Four stars for Bull River Marina. Five stars for the marsh. read more
