In the past, I've been one of those people who gets bored easily with one type of exercise- I had done a couch to 5k program, only to promptly revert to couch potato status after completing it. Considering my husband once jokingly said that one of my favorite hobbies is sleeping, motivating myself to stick to a class that meets 3 times a week at 6 AM, rain or shine, seemed pretty unlikely. But there was a Yelp deal, so I figured that I'd give it a go. Surprisingly, I'm going into my 3rd month of Evolve Bootcamp, and I don't want to quit. Shelley is a creative and knowledgeable coach, and I find that I am never bored thanks to the wide variety of exercises that she incorporates into the classes. And the workouts are effective and will get you results. My cardiovascular fitness and strength have noticeably improved. I feel less sluggish and more alert at work. My family has remarked that they've seen a positive change in the way my body looks, and that feels awesome! The classes are small enough where everyone gets personal attention. Shelley will correct your form if needed so that you stay safe, and she will definitely provide modifications if it looks like you're not being challenged enough (nobody gets off easy). The fellow bootcampers are laid back, and unlike upscale fitness studios, nobody cares what you're wearing, how old or young you are, or whether you're a gal or a guy. If you're considering attending, DO IT! Logistical notes: 1) There is a place where you can safely store a small bag (ie: change of clothes) if needed. I have to go to work immediately after the morning sessions, so not being able to bring a bag would be a dealbreaker for me. 2) Be prepared to get very sweaty and possibly dirty. 3) Prices, especially for returning bootcampers, are excellent compared to other area bootcamps.

She mixes up the exercises and really focuses on movements that provide equivalent results to workouts I have done using machines or weights at the gym. I felt and saw results after just a few classes. Shelley really pays attention to form and demonstrates each movement and gives tips on how to do the workouts safely. I cannot think of a better way to get to know the green spaces in Boston than working out with Shelley and fellow bootcampers!

Refused to give me a refund even when I contacted the same day I was charged. Don't leave the gym until you have proof you cancelled or they will rip you off. Horrible experience, why can't they just play nice with customers. I always recommended this gym to locals but I guess that wouldn't help anymore. Had to go to credit card company to dispute charges.

I will say that I think the layout of some of the other local studios I've been to have been a bit better and felt more spacious, especially because the classes are usually pretty packed. From my experience, all the spin instructors have been great. The spin studio is dark and the music is loud. It's a very specific vibe, but I find it fun!

Cardio room: replaced crappy old stationary bikes with two almost-new Keiser spin bikes---these are free of silly frills/gimmicks unlike the big hulking Life Fitness, Precor, or Cybex bikes but provide unmatched ergonomics and authentic bike-feel, which is why they are used in spin classes everywhere. Forgot how nice and strong the AC is...sigh, if only the weight room had the same! 2. Weight room: instead of a random hodgepodge of ancient dumbbells, they finally got a full matched set of Perform Better (also the best in the business) rubber coated dumbbells, two excellent Matrix multi-position adjustable benches, a full Valor Fitness squat cage with deadlift platform & arms, a Smith machine with deadlift arms, and a smattering of kettlebells including 25# and 40# pairs, topping out with 55# and 70# singles...80-100# would have been better, but a 70# max KB isn't bad. Some new weightroom accessories I've never seen anywhere else: a Titan multi-grip Olympic barbell, a fat barbell and fat lat-pulldown straight bar, a pair of 6" wooden blocks with handles, and a number of other unusual but useful training tools if you're willing to dig a little and use your improvisatory imagination. Of course they've kept some of the old stuff, like about 4-5 pairs of truly old-school York dumbbells and a gazillion of old rusty all metal weight plates (most gyms now use rubber coated plates with built in hand openings for easy carrying), but hey, better to have an over-abundance of old weights than not enough of the new weights (as sometimes happens in the newer gyms). 3. Elkay filtered water fountains in cardio room and by basketball court...this is a life-saver, literally! You don't want folks getting dehydrated just because they don't like the taste of a crappy old water fountain or tap water through 100 year old rusty pipes. 4. The small indoor track above the basketball court is about the same, but I noticed they've made the best of it by adding a Concept 2 rower in one corner (next to a Wing Chun dummy, which I have NEVER seen in a gym before, wow), a Stairmaster next to the 80lb hanging bag (vinyl Everlast, not bad) in the opposite corner, and a carefully stabilized "Power Tower" in the 3rd available corner. Now that they have kettlebells, the track is perfect for doing weighted carries (Suitcase C, Farmer's C, Cross-body C, etc) which is an incredibly useful full-body and core-intensive exercise most people overlook. All in all, I'd say that this Y while small and still burdened with the ravages of age (the locker rooms and showers are just as decrepit as ever), it does have about 90% of everything essential you really need. The Fitness Director, or whoever manages the workout rooms, has clearly put a lot of attention and care to make the best of their clearly shoestring budget...and does know what they're doing, and does it well. Their opening hours are relatively decent compared to the Cambridge Y or especially the Charlestown Y. Unlike those two places they offer free parking...big plus in this area! I do wish they would get rid of the silly "Health Center" extra membership tier that allows access to their mediocre saunas and just get two really good saunas built into a small increase in membership fees. Their membership fees remain a good 25% or so lower than that of other local Ys, but considering how old and small the place is, that makes perfect sense. If I lived 2-3 blocks away like I used to, I would still come here if I didn't have a car, or whenever I didn't feel like driving 15-30 minutes to better/bigger Ys nearby.

She is a personal trainer and I am signed up for two different fitness classes throughout the week so the pace of the class worked well for us and was a great challenge. While it was a great workout, I can't even tell you what was going on in that 50 minutes. The music was unbearably loud. The instructor's mic was even louder and all any of it sounded like was noise. The coach was fine, but he didn't really coach? Everyone was expected to be doing the same thing, which is unrealistic. From my perspective, if you don't run, there's no point in taking the class because Barry's coaches the treadmill for runners only? The most unique part of our Barry's journey was the fact that no one wiped down equipment... no one wiped down their treadmill after we switched to the floor and I understood this until the END. I assumed we all would wipe EVERYTHING down at the end. Nope. Everyone just walked out. My friend and I stayed after to change and freshen up, but I never saw anyone go in and wipe any equipment down. That's kind of gross but what do I know? We should we wiping down equipment throughout class just to be safe rather than sorry. I know I would be open to taking another class, but still would love to know how these classes are formatted because it feels like the coach is just shouting random things and you kinda have to keep up or you're screwed.

I have never been to a group class that is less than 1 hour unless it was a cross-fit class that is a weight training/paired with a 30m workout. But you get a great workout in that timeframe. Things to note: 1) Right off the Sullivan Square Orange line (so if you are coming from the back bay - it's convenient) or there are some parkings spots (3) and some street parking if you get there early. 2) Very clean locker rooms (2 showers and some products) plus towel service & lockers (bring a lock though). 3) You don't need to be in rock solid shape to go. The trainers are cool - especially Pat who is like the morning trainer and will adjust depending on your ability. 4) Workouts include ropes, TRX, pull ups, weights. 5) First 3 classes are free. And then you can get punch card or monthly options.This will cost you around $120 a month - but you know this is cheaper than cross-fit or the equinox. And I honestly hate gyms and I need a group environment to help motivate myself. They are doing a groupon or guilt city deal right not too. This is a local place, so if you are a traveling consultant, etc. - it does stink that it's not global. But always support the local communities! 6) There is a weight room for pre/post workouts 7) Someone rents a spin class studio room. God, I hate spin - but maybe I haven't been to a good one yet. 8) Awesome morning times, lunch times, and afternoons. 9) They have mommy plus stroller classes. 10) Outdoor classes at the bunker hill monument (45m instead of 35). But it's not convenient if u are not driving. Take orange to community college and walk like 15m. If u r in the area and looking for a high intense workout, you should drop in. People are super nice and it's a convenient location in Boston.
