The Desert Ridge location is closest to me, but I was in the mood for some variety so I checked out the Frank Lloyd Wright location on a Wednesday around 5:30 p.m. And boy was I happy I did! Compared to the location I typically go to, this on is roughly double the size. Which is very much a good thing for a gym. It means more room in between machines, less human traffic jams, and better amenities. There's a full-size basketball court, while my location only has a half court. The basketball court doubles as a pickle ball court...though that's not a plus for me. I'm one of the leading pickle ball haters in the country. And here's the kicker: they have an infrared sauna. I personally have never seen this at a gym. It's cooler than a dry sauna, so this was a pleasant surprise. If you have an upgraded membership, they also have two cold plunge baths. My only criticism? The water pressure at one of the water fountains is so low that not enough water comes out so you're worried your mouth will actually touch the metal as you're trying to drink. And if someone is filling up their water bottle at the water fountain next to it, no water will com out of yours. You would think this is something they could fix. Like the other Mountainside Fitness locations I have been to, this gym is clean (locker room, showers, and bathroom included), well-equipped, offers complimentary towels, mouthwash, and body lotion, has a cafe with smoothies and snacks, and more. They have a huge parking lot, so I didn't have trouble finding a spot (albeit not close). It's easier to park here than some of their other locations where the lot is smaller. For the money you pay for a membership, Mountainside Fitness is hands down the best gym I have ever been to. Their presence on Yelp proves it. Rarely does a gym have a rating of 4.0 or above. Mountainside Fitness has that.

The pickleball courts are new, the hot yoga room flooring was recently upgraded, and the new locker rooms, saunas, and cold plunges are almost finished. The staff is great. The tennis director is very involved with the tennis members and offers clinics and events for all levels. The pros are all involved and very qualified. The members are great, and it is a nice community to be a part of. Too often we leave reviews when things aren't great, and in this case, I wanted to leave a positive review because things are being managed well and the club feels like a great value.

When everything is operating as expected, it can be a pleasant place to work out. That said, there have been ongoing frustrations. The monthly cost continues to feel high for the value received, especially with added credit card processing fees that come across as unnecessary "nickel and diming." Renovations were promised within a specific timeframe, but key amenities -- including the sauna and spa areas -- have remained unavailable longer than expected while members continue paying full dues. Communication from leadership has also been disappointing. Concerns were raised but not meaningfully addressed, which makes it harder to justify the premium pricing. Overall, it's a decent club with potential, but the pricing, transparency, and follow-through on promised improvements need work.

To my surprise, there aren't any 24 Hour Fitness locations in Phoenix. So, I needed to make a switch. Mountainside has quite a few locations around town. The closest one to my place is the Desert Ridge location. So, that's where I typically go to. But I was feeling frisky and decided to try out the Paradise Valley location on a Monday around 5:30 p.m. The parking lot was almost full, but I was able to snag one of the last available spots. Something to keep in mind at peak times. The layout and size of this gym is almost identical to the Desert Ridge location. Which is a good think. The gym, locker room, and bathrooms are clean. There's a good selection of equipment and it's well maintained. There's a half basketball court, dry sauna, and steam room. There are a decent number of TVs (though they could be bigger). There are exercise classes. All in all, for the bang for your buck, I haven't seen any other gym (ever) that provides better value. You also get complimentary towels with your visit. Forgot to mention that. Mountainside Fitness does everything I look for in a gym at a high level. There's a reason most gyms have overall ratings on Yelp of less than 4 stars. Mountainside Fitness gyms tend to be above 4 stars. That speaks volumes.
