With the distance and the variability in quality between instruments, I wasn't sure how I could realistically try multiple pianos without driving all over Southern California. Fortunately, Kim's Piano made the process incredibly easy. They have a huge inventory of Yamaha pianos, and I worked with Steve Rivera, who was responsive, knowledgeable, and very fair throughout. He helped me narrow down several strong options over email before I made the trip to their Stanton warehouse. When I finally went in, I brought along a piano technician to evaluate the instrument I selected. He was also impressed with both the quality of the piano and the breadth of their inventory. I ended up purchasing a 1971 Yamaha U3 that plays and looks like new. I couldn't be happier with the quality, value, and overall experience. Steve was patient and helpful every step of the way. Her birthday was coming up and I thought this would be a nice surprise for her, so I turned to Yelp for a piano tuner in the Orange County area, but the results were quite sparse. I ended up contacting a piano store in LA with great reviews, hoping they would travel this far for a piano tuning. Instead they referred me to Dianne Durben. Dianne called me promptly, and fortunately had an opening the very next day (due to a cancellation), just in time for my wife's birthday. She gave me a quote over the phone of $150 for her normal tuning cost, and advised me ahead of time that it would cost $225 if the piano needed a "pitch raise," since it had been so long since its last tuning. She arrived on time, went straight to work on the piano and had it sounding great in no time. The cost was exactly as quoted, no surprises. When my wife came home I encouraged her to "relax and play her piano" for a few minutes. She immediately noticed the difference and was thrilled! Not only did it sound in tune, but she commented on how the tone was richer and not as harsh as it sounded previously. She was very happy with her surprise and we will definitely have Dianne back to tune our piano again.
