This is a review of shopping here, not consigning. I went in last Sunday with a friend who had never been to any buffalo exchange and we were blown away by the genuine kindness of the employees. The second my friend had grabbed more than four items an employee asked if she would like to start a hold rack and keep looking for more items. I've never experienced this at any buffalo exchange, so I was so excited to keep shopping. Throughout our time there (probably an hour), we were approached several more times asking if we would like to add more items to our rack so we didn't have to worry about holding them. This simple act made our shopping experience so much more pleasant. As a former retail employee, I was happy to hear the employees genuinely enjoy working and talking with customers. Many of them had simple and funny conversations that weren't limited to the normal conversations often heard in customer service environments. Aside from the excellent service, I found three Madewell tops that were 50% off, I was so thrilled! I've always loved buffalo exchange, but I am definitely coming back to this location soon. And I know you've found a new customer in my friend, too! read more

Went here to sell my clothes. Both times the manager just opened my folded clothes and didn't even look through it properly, and guess what.... they refused all the clothing without any valid reasons. Totally wasted my time, will not be going back, not even as a buyer. read more

I find the staff friendly and welcoming. I have noticed recently (now that I have a son who wears men's clothing!) that it is much easier to sell men's clothing. My hunch is they get less of it overall, but there is a steady demand. Recently my son did a trade and got $68 in store credit. He left with virtually new BURBERRY jeans and a John Varvatos button down for $5. Just a tip to the guys (of course clothing needs to be in excellent condition and clean). read more

Everyone is correct about how picky they are with buying your clothes. To add to the whining, I had a pair of french connection black dress pants that was in probably good to very good condition and a complete eh. Their selection of clothes also seems eh. I like the one at Davis Square better but if I have an extra 10 to 15 mins around Allston, I do not mind coming in to have a glance around. read more

I echo everyone who says that the selection here sucks, both in terms of what's for sale as well as what they'll buy from you (and how much they'll give you for it, too). I much prefer the Buffalo in Davis all around, but unfortunately the hipstery Allston one is much more convenient for me, so sometimes I suck it up and take my old clothes here to dispose of. What bugs me the most though is that they often don't have enough staff to man the store. I came on Sunday about 45 mins after they opened to try and sell a few items, and there was already a selling line that stretched across the store, which only got worse as time went on. I could see that there was only one person manning both the selling station and the registers (the store has 2 stations of each, and typically both selling stations are running), so she had to continually jump back and forth between the two. Pair that with the fact that there was another associate who was just floating around the store and straightening things out (why couldn't she jump in and help either line?!), and that almost everyone in the selling line had multiple large suitcases to sell (I only had 7 items and was wishing they had an express line), and it resulted in me waiting over an hour to sell (and they only took 2 items in the end for pennies, of course). To be fair, the one staffer was nice about it and often thanked us all for our patience, and was cheerful enough when it came time to sell (didn't get any attitude this time, and I even heard some legit reasons why they didn't take some of my stuff, like "we love this style but already have a large amount of it in-store"). And by the time I got up to the front, a second staffer had joined the fray to help sell and/or cash out. Still though, I feel like they should have planned their staffing better... they know weekends are crazy busy with selling, it's not a surprise. That incident aside, it's never really a positive experience in this location (or is that just because I can't stand hipsters? No, just me?). Head for the Davis location, you'll be a lot happier. read more

didn't read reviews from sellers before I dragged a giant bag of excellent quality items over here. the wait was extremely long and when I called beforehand no one mentioned to bring ID. So I waited and then dragged my giant bag back home. it was too damn hot to drag the ish back so I'll probably just donate everything. smh read more

Went in this week to sell some stuff and was disappointed by the backslide this place has taken. I feel like I am judged because my tats aren't visible and I don't wear makeup. They didn't take anything I had, and I'm not sure why. While I used to be able to fine a cute piece or two, I don't see anything wearable in the store. Oh well. read more

I am writing from a buyers perspective, not sellers. I usually sell at the Davis location since I live in Somerville. The selling situation did seem chaotic. What's up with all the negativity people? This isn't supposed to be a super high end store. If you're going to buffalo exchange you should expect lower end labels. I personally find it to be one of the best low priced second hand stores in the Boston area. I've been to the location in Davis MULTIPLE times and their selection is much more 'meh.' If you're looking for 'meh' clothes, go to Davis. Things at this location are much more unique and there are tons more pieces to pick from. The workers have good taste. I took 10+ items into the dressing room and could have taken much more (Davis only allows you to take in 6...). I dropped by the other day and got the following: -2 unique dresses (one UO, one mall brand) -awesome menswear heels, *MINT* condition -flats (with studs) -a faux fur jacket Everything in my purchase is in style according to current trends, and is unique. I spent about $80 before store credit, $40 after. Not too bad, especially considering how much more it would be at TJ Maxx... No it's not dirt cheap but it's Boston. I also saw a Michael Kors purse for $45, as well as a few other designer purses in the store. I was very impressed by the purse selection (Davis usually has a handful of purses, rarely of designer quality). Additionally, I saw a handful of tasteful vintage dresses. I didn't buy them because I go to Garmet District for that, but they had MUCH MORE vintage than Davis (which never has vintage... :( )... Try them out. read more

This is a nice store because you can sell your second-hand clothes there. However, they are quite choosy so it's not easy to sell there. On the other hand, their items had relatively high price compared to other second-hand stores. All in all, the staffs are nice and clothes are decent there, but I guess I won't go there next time. read more

This place is run by hipsters and the people who shop here are in their 20's. Don't bother consigning with them unless your wardrobe is from the grunge era or "vintage". Brought in my nice designer clothes which weren't trendy enough. Lesson learned. read more

I haven't had good luck in the past with selling my clothes--my style is usually never edgy enough or hipster enough or fill-in-the-blank enough for the target market--but this Buffalo Exchange is awesome because it caters to an entire spectrum of fashion sensibilities. My mix of Urban Outfitters, J. Crew, Banana Republic, and vintage was well received here; each time I've been here I've sold about $200 worth of clothes, shoes, and purses. That being said, everything I've brought in was in good condition. (Though I did actually sell them some stuff that I bought at the Comm Ave Goodwill...double thrifting for the win!) The buyers were very friendly and polite. Unlike some other buyers I've encountered, they didn't make any snarky comments, smirk at each other behind the counter, etc. while looking over my stuff. Very professional, and explained why they didn't take certain items without making me feel bad about myself. In terms of shopping, this place is *awesome.* My first time here, I picked up a Vena Cava dress for $38 (used store credit, so basically free, using my warped logic), that originally retailed for $500. Last visit, I saw a Bensoni dress for $40 and J Brand skinnies for $24. I think they priced the Frye boots I brought in at $46. All in all, awesome prices! read more

Sometimes I love everything here, sometimes I wonder if my ex-boyfriend's blind poodle was picking out the clothes. Either way, you're bound to find a deal, or some unique item you would have had to dredge Goodwill for. As for selling/exchanging your clothes, that's also a hit or miss. They're really picky, but there have been times that an item I thought was ridiculous they were all over. So, go for it, but don't set your hopes too high. read more

I was perusing the jewelry while waiting for my sister to check out and the sales clerk asked me if I wanted to see anything behind the counter. I said no, I was just looking and he stopped checking out my sister, and made it a point to put the jewelry laying out back behind the shelf. As if I would steal second hand plastic jewelry. He is a jerk and I won't be returning. I recommend you visit the Goodwill nearby, better prices for the same brands. read more

Overpriced used clothing. My favorite top is from here--a peplum top from Gap. It was $20!! There are obviously cheaper things but $15-$20 was the average for the blouses I was looking at. Too pricey for secondhand. read more

I've been coming to this store for about 3.5 years once a season to see if anything has changed. It seems to just go more downhill and I'd like to make this review hoping that management gives a slight f*ck about what myself and the other 20+ ppl saying the same thing have to offer. It's not worth selling any clothes here unless you want to carry all of them back home, or get a measly $10 for a rlly nice piece. I've brought in designer, streetwear, and other nice trending brands ranging from old pieces of mine to ones only worn once and bought 6 months prior and they will NOT take it. It seems staff is also trained to fake compliment your items and small talk to get you to come back in hopes they'll actually buy from you one day. Nope. Please save your time and donate to a more deserving place like Urban Renewal down the block or Goodwill further down towards BU. It's really sh*tty to have a shop in a college student heavy area with "affordable" clothing when rlly it's all overpriced super outdated smelly forever 21 and brandy Melville from god knows where bc they're certainly not buying it from the customers coming in. This place is a total ripoff. It's also insulting to watch buyers with very...questionable clothing tastes themselves not take any of your nice clothing and tell you it's out of season when you know more about fashion than they clearly do. I've discussed this with friends and they all have had the same experiences with this location. The west coast locations are bomb and the Davis Square one was slightly better than this. Please if you care about your business, listen to the customers because they're right and this has gone on far too long. You are wasting so many people's limited daily time making them wait with suitcases and trash bags for over an hour sometimes only to send them home with the same amount they brought in. Staff has also followed me and others around constantly as if we're going to steal (as if ppl would want to steal anything this store had LOL) and it's not a way to treat someone who plans on potentially purchasing items there. Some staff have been rlly nice but it doesn't make up for the other overly judgmental teenagers they have hawking around customers to assure no one steals their wish.com looking attire. You get 2 stars for being clean, but honey it is NOT organized. read more

I've gone here multiple times to sell clothes and the employees are so rude every time. They're condescending and unnecessarily picky, they say to bring in season clothing but don't want to buy any of it. I bring designer, in season clothing here and they give me 8$ for it. The selling process is ridiculous you'd be better off selling your clothes online or maybe going to another location. It's almost like they buy based off the mood they're in that day which just isn't fair. read more

Buffalo Exchange is awesome for good deals on great conditioned recycled clothing. Their jewelry selection is my favorite, they've got a great selection of necklaces that are so unique and pretty well priced. You can bring in some of your old clothes for them to take a look at and potentially buy, for which you can get either a 50% store credit or 30% cash! The best part is, when you make a purchase, if you don't use a bag you get to put a token worth 5cents into a little box for a charity of your choice:) read more

I've been going to Buffalo Exchange in New York for years and was really excited with this store opened in Allston. However, this place has gone downhill a lot lately. It was great when it opened, but it definitely feels like something's changed. About two years ago, I would go constantly and they had the best stuff for prices that made sense, amazing deals and great employees. Now when I go in, it is difficult to find anything. It all looks like retro thrift shop clothes that are wayy over priced. BCBG dresses from 15 years ago for $40 that are at goodwill for $8. That seems excessive. The employees' attitudes are now worse than most stores I go to. They always ignore me and I feel like I'm interrupting their personal conversations to ask for help. Not a good experience. The location in Davis square is MUCH better and the NY stores are awesome. I am not impressed by the Allston store anymore. read more

The clothing selection is not the best. There is nothing really vintage here, more of just a thrift store filled with brand names and clothes from H&M or Forever 21 or Banana Republic etc. Some things were overpriced. The shorts and skirts selection is terrible, there are very limited unique pieces. There are very limited sweaters here and there are not many jackets. This Buffalo Exchange is nothing compared to the one in Williamsburg Brooklyn. read more

Moving from NYC - where Buffalo Exchange originated - I was pleased to see this here. They will only buy/sell certain nicer brands so it's quality stuff. Not dirt cheap but cheaper than original retail price. Some stuff might be new and all is well taken care of. I love it. Great place to find trendy clothes, shoes and accessories. They also do events like having stylists available to help you shop. They buy too for cash or credit but I haven't tried it out yet. read more

I had my first experience selling at Buffalo Exchange. After reading a lot of these reviews, I was skeptical, but it was great! While they didn't take all my items ( and nicely explained why) they took about 8 or 9 pieces and gave me just about the same amount as if I sold them on ebay or elsewhere, and so much easier! I was shocked they took my old yoga pants. yah! Advice to those selling. The items should really be in GOOD condition. Don't bring something in with a small rip or tear, or stain. They are running a business so of course they need to be careful with what they take. Everyone was very polite and nice to me, seems like going on the weekends could be very chaotic and perhaps where they are trying to get stuff done quickly. I went late afternoon and wasnt busy at all. Will def. be back! read more

Always have good luck shopping here, I mean it is a consignment shop you do have to dig for your style. You can get deals, but I've never had anything mind blowing. I definitely frequent this place with a walk through/purchase about once a month, and the staff is nice and appropriately attentive. I've sold here a couple times, solid wearable times that I just never ended up putting on, many with tags on. Oddest thing to me was a pair of Tommy Hilfiger riding boots that they didn't take at the end of July (off season I know, but I was trying to do a big closet clean) and the woman doing my sale literally laughed at me...I though getting a great pair of fall boots preseason would have been a good thing but they wanted nothing to do with them unfortunately. If anyone wants a pair of size 7 grey riding boots I've still got them sitting at home :) would love to give them a home! read more

Jewelry selection is great. Some clothes are in good condition. They seem to be an organized store overall, for the most part. One word of advice: if you are shopping for shoes, DO NOT get them from here. I bought a few pairs from here, and nearly all of them were unwearable within a year (or sometimes less). read more

Do not waiste your time! I took a train all the way out from east boston...I had a HUGE suit case full of clothes..Mostly name brand with tags still on them..They did not want any of my leather lambskin jackets with tags still attached or never worn before guess jackets...NOR my $200 dollar poison jeans with tags still attached...the only thing they wanted was a pair of cheap sunglasses...Yet they refused all the expensive name brand never worn before stuff. Just put it aside didn't even look at them saying its not what they look for..I looked around the store and the clothes they do look for are ugly ass sin and raggity looking cheap crap you can get at tellos or forever 21 for cheaper cause they don't take name brand nice things thats for sure. What a waste of my time and energy. First and LAST experience with Buffalo Exchange. Called ahead, described clothes I wanted to sell to them. The salesperson said, "those sound great. Bring 'em in." Now, mind you, everything I brought in was 1-2 years old, exactly what they advertise that they buy. I had several pairs of new jeans, multiple shirts, a few T's, a pair of fun socks (a gift, never worn) and two suits that were each worth at least $700 and each only worn once. (I had a major surgery a couple years ago, and lost over 85lbs. I had bought new clothes, and then the weight came back on. So, the new, thin clothes are useless to me.) After calling, and confirming that they would more than likely take some of the clothes (they couldn't guarantee without seeing the clothes in person - I get that), I drove over 45 min to get there. Fought for parking. I walked into the store with four large bags filled with the cleaned clothes. Immediately, a staff member joined me and began looking at these clothes. "Nope, this suit is too old."It was 1 year old. "This one's style is at at least 4 years out of date, and the designer is not one we sell." It was brand new last year, and I told them the designer over the phone in advance, and was told it was one of their favorites. "I don't think we can sell these shirts with this style collar." "This color isn't selling well these days." "These jeans are all slightly distressed a bit more than the style demands today." "We don't do beige or khaki." Except for all the beige and khaki things on the racks around me. After going through all that, for about 30 minutes, they bought the socks. Just the socks. Gave me $1.65 for the socks and a gift card for $5 off in their store. I drove 45+ minutes home with the same stuff I brought with me. That was 90-minutes round trip, plus the parking, plus walking 3 blocks with bags of clothes, plus 30 minutes in the store. All for $1.65. What a waste of my time. read more

Buffalo exchange is an awesome store to find really unique and funky pieces to add to your wardrobe-however this location, not so much... The clothes and jewelrey are pretty tacky, but the shoe selection is a bit better. My selling experience at this store is always very nerve racking. I have brought it clothes, and yes probably everyone says this, that are definitely in-style for young adults, as well as clean and in great condition...but told some weird excuse such as "its super cute but not right now". After an unsuccessful sell, I browse the store to find flats from target, ugly tank tops from wet seal, and ripped handbags. Just no logic in their selling/purchasing most of the time. read more

Buffalo Exchange used to be great. I have sold clothes with them several times and occasionally come to browse. The pickers have terrible taste: over the past year, Allston's BE has turned into a Forever 21. No, really--something like 80% of their women's selection is used clothing from Forever 21 being sold for roughly what it costs new. The rest is from H&M. Everything looks the same which is no surprise because they pick only the most hideous, worthless clothing. On previous trips, I have brought them brand-name, carefully kept clothing which they rejected, instead opting for my worn-out, tacky, old clothing that I had been unable to sell on eBay and had brought them as a last stop before donation. You can sell your better garments online for more, anyway. A plus if you're selling, hence 1 star. The buyers do not know what they are doing and often accept clothing that is fake (lots of fake bags, dresses) or has holes. They often reject clothing that is valuable which means there is nothing to buy. I have been sitting on my $150 credit for ages. The racks are brimming with identical crop tops with snarky sayings and lace-back tees. Also, several of the staff members are quite rude. Though most of the staff are courteous and professional, while in line waiting to sell, I have heard BE employees insult customers based on the clothing they are selling making for an incredibly uncomfortable experience... Maybe this is part of their 'hip' vibe. read more

I've shopped here a couple of times, you might find some nice classic items once in a blue moon. It's more 90s hipster and since I was actually a 90s kid, I'm not looking to relive the bad parts through questionable fashion but, to each their own. I tried selling here for the first time and it left me feeling off. I wasn't expecting much since I was originally going to donate it all anyway so I just had a backpack full and a small shoulder bag. I had to wait about an hour as the two people ahead of me had a huge duffle full and a giant ikea bag full. Once the ikea guy was done, the second buyer left so only one girl was sifting through the giant duffle. So I'm waiting and waiting as five more people get in line to sell. Tell me why when my time comes up, the manager/supervisor comes to help with my two tiny bags and they try to rush me, one asking me questions as the other one is sifting and telling me to put away the rejects. "It gets faster when you're up here." No, I just watched for an hour and this didn't happen to them. I got like $7 in the end which is fine because like I said, I originally was going to donate it all. They're also kind of pushy in wanting you to take the credit instead of the cash but, unless they have stores abroad I wouldn't be able to use it! Anyway, I guess something about me screamed "get this woman out of here", maybe since I was just in a tshirt and shorts, not a burgundy velvet jumpsuit and doc martins. /shiver read more

I had stuff from Banana republic, gap, target, and things from London that were designer, and they didn't take a single thing. With such a wide range of clothing I was shocked. Clearly there is no rhyme or reason to their methods. Don't waste your time trying to sell here. I want those 30 minutes of my life back. read more

This store is the biggest joke ever. I've been a few times to "exchange" my clothes for cash. The first time I went I had 6 pairs of expensive name brand jeans I bought at full price in Nordstrom. The women said they were out of style.. Weird because I see people wearing true religions all the time still and no one is going to exchange jeans they just bought. The second time I went I brought summer dresses and nice tops that were also name brand ( free people, DV, velvet, Michael Star, Marciano) and not cheap, along with two shirts from Urban outfitter.. Which by the way is 1 block from Buffalo Exchange! The women didn't take any of my nice clothes but took my two urban outfitter shirts... Then proceeded to tell me they had enough summer dresses and tops. The clothes in there are for the circus and are no way "hipster chic" and the dresses they had on display in the window were entirely disgusting. Those people have zero idea what fashion is or have any clue about brands. You're better off selling your clothes online or just keeping them because even when they do take your clothes you get completely ripped off. read more

I was visiting Allston and shopping here over the weekend with some old and new friends (new to Buffalo Exchange). I encouraged us to stop in as it formerly was my favorite Allston shop. I found this adorable top with a hole in the seam and an orange stain on it (it was a blue top). However, this didn't stop me from potentially buying. So i asked an employee if they would mind offering a discount for the hole (before i noticed the stain). She kindly asks her manager who says "With the hole in the seam, it's an easy fix. I'm not going to offer a discount." I then approached the store manager and said "I understand your employee just asked this question, however i also just noticed this stain too. Is there any possibility you could offer a discount, i really love the top I just feel as though it should be discounted." Her response... lol. "I mean, the hole is on the seam so it's an easy fix and the stain - that's what tide to go pens are for but i guess i'll give you a dollar off". Totally mind blown at the response from a "manager" as a customer service worker myself - I said "Nope, you can keep it." I've never had anything less than a great experience here with the exception of this visit. I understand you're a used clothing store, but if your business structure is honestly based on selling items a) for more than most of it is worth b) for expecting your customers to take their items home and FIX them before use then that's a business structure i refused to support as i would hope others would too. Not only that, but based on the poor attitude of your manager - I will encourage my friends to choose a business more worthy of that extra dollar. It was never about the price, and i would have gladly payed to repair this top had I noticed a sliver of understanding. It's the principle, not the price. Ya failed me, Buffalo Exchange. Consider re-evaluating your business model otherwise I may not be the only customer you lose. read more

Waste of time as a seller. A thrift store that does consignment should tailor to ALL types of fashion, and ESPECIALLY should take unique pieces that people go to thrift stores specifically to find. My friends two never worn leather jackets were denied because they didn't have a collar line that was supposedly "in." Absolute crap any other thrift store would readily take leather jackets as they would sell easily. All of our high end items were denied for various miniscule reasons while my shitty, worn $4 H&M Coachella line tank tops I bought last year were taken. What was picked was absolutely at the bias of the women taking the clothes and their style, no thought about what people with different styles might like. read more

Needed a place to SELL old/used/never worn but still awesome clothing. Found this place via yelp. Thought I would give it a try. Brought a small bag of pretty nice clothing (in both quality and name) to sell. Wasn't really expecting to receive too much back...but I did expect payout to be reasonable. 30% cash to 50% credit is o.k. for some. Wow! Reviewers weren't kidding when they said the associates were picky. In light of this, I thought the items in the store would be a reflection of such choosiness. But this was not at all the case! The sweater that I sold today has been with me for a few months b/c I literally loved it. What I received was literally pennies as compared to the actual cost. Part of me wanted to reach over the counter and snatch my sweater back from the sales person but alas I did not. Overall, not impressed. I would rather sell any future items I have on Ebay, Amazon, [insert other 3rd party thrift store here]. For some this may be a steal for purchases but in my personal opinion, not so much for sales. read more
